I mean, I don't blame these youtubers. They need the money and as long as the company or product looks respectable and appropriate they are fine to promote it. In the end, it's up to audienc discretion and research whether they should buy it (this video being very useful for this)
As a self-taught graphic/video/web designer I learned most of what I know through UA-cam. The difference IMO of the free UA-cam videos vs SkillShare is that at least 60% of UA-cam videos are too wordy and self-promoting or offer really specific tutorials on how to create one thing. SkillShare is usually straightforward, has clear goals to accomplish a few things in one category, and most have files to follow along with which is very helpful. I only do the yearly subscription and the $100 is well worth it IMO.
Hello, I know this is an old comment but can I ask how the engagement is on Skillshare? Like if I have a question to ask - do the teachers there reply often from your experience? Or is it essentially just watching an educational video and hoping to get value out of that alone? I'm trying to learn digital art for the first time and I keep finding random niche things that confuse me that UA-cam has not been able to help me with. So I'm contemplating using either Skillshare or an online tutoring type thing. Sorry for the long reply but I would appreciate any feedback!!
@@HamburgerWasteland It depends on who created the course. Generally you're just taking the courses and rarely have interactions with the people who created them. I did a 2 month trial on Skillshare because I've started doing digital art and I wanted to check out their classes on that subject. I did find their videos to be, on the whole, better quality than some of the videos I was watching on UA-cam. However a huge portion of the classes available for digital illustration were for Procreate, which I don't use because I don't have an iPad. There were less videos available for Adobe Creative Cloud applications like Photoshop and Illustrator, which are what I use.
I think there's something to be said about piecing the ideas of multiple people together, rather than just having a single teacher -- different people might have different ideas on what looks good in color grading, for instance, and it gives you more chance to develop your own style.

I've used skillshare for design classes that I can't find in most other paid online art learning websites. I also used it for learning softwares. To be honest tho, I find the classes kinda hit and miss, and mostly suitable for beginners. I keep pausing my membership because I find myself not using it unless I have a need to learn something new and can't find a good tutorial on UA-cam.
This was really interesting. I've never really considered using these types of services but this video definetly helped to show me a possibly very valuable content type! Thank you for doing what you do!
This was a phenomenal video, thank you! I learned a lot. I, personally, am probably going to subscribe to Skillshare, because I prefer the method of consistently leaning, with the same teacher over multiple lessons rather than the more sporadic learning approach of UA-cam. However, I will do more research on the website first.
Excellent video Jimmy. I was on the fence on Skillshare but your video made me commit to a year subscription. Since I don't have much time to spare I think skillshare works for me better than youtube, even though I don't think I would ever ditch youtube to keep learning at all.
LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda) is often free with a library card, which is also free. Not always the most cutting edge, but it’s often a step up from UA-cam tutorials

I use UA-cam as a first resource, then Udemy if it is something I want to really dig into deeper. What you said about the gaps is the main reason I use both of these. Both resources will have their gaps as the "teacher" has a particular persona in mind for who their audience is. This creates these gaps as the "teacher" assumes some level of pre-exisiting knowledge. On top of that, the way they explain something may be too simple or complex. I find myself using Udemy at 2x speed for most courses so that I can blow past the beginner material. Or, (since most of my courses involve coding of some type or another) I'll code along side the tutorials but using a completely different example, so that I will encounter bugs and have the benefit of working through them while gaining the knowledge from the explicit curriculum set out. Additionally, the "piece-meal" approach of UA-cam forces the "student" to build the puzzle from the pieces provided. To me, this is like Udemy teaching you a recipe that you can repeat, but UA-cam is teaching you various techniques that leaves it up to you to pick a recipe and which techniques are appropriate. It definitely requires more from the student to apply their knowledge, but there's no substitute to learning without the training wheels on.
This was an excellent review! I love your delivery style. I just heard about Skillshare from another UA-camr and was curious if anyone had reviewed it and that’s how I found you. I would have never thought to compare Coursera and Udemy with Skillshare and UA-cam, so thank you for an interesting perspective. Although you are a content creator you viewed the platform with the average “Joe” in mind, so that was great. You definitely helped me make a decision about subscribing to the service. I’ll definitely explore more on your channel and, hopefully become one of your subscribers.
What I like about Skill Share is that teachers can provide materials to follow along/practice with. I’ve used it to learn VBA for Excel so having workbooks to download and follow along with.
On Coursera and such MOOC platforms like edX, Futurelearn etc everything is free to access. In coursera, even specializations can be audited for free, just scroll down and look for the listed courses and enroll to them individually to "audit" and you can study them all you like. What you need to pay for is when you want the certificates only.
Beware that not all courses on Skillshare are complete. I was following an IT course on Skillshare and an entire chapter was missing, I spend hours trying to figure out why what I was trying did not work, I then did some google research and found the full course with the missing content on the authors website. On top of that if you have in the past signed up for the service and see a trial offer, do not think it applies to you, it says 'log in to continue' and not 'sign up to continue' which might make you think it also applies for returning customers. This is not the case, you will be charged in seconds and of course they do not offer refunds. On the content of Skillshare, it seems to me that youtube offers exactly the same thing and better. The audio and video quality is NOT always better on Skillshare. I have seen many many really bad Skillshare courses. The video's on youtube that matter, which will be seen by far more people, are of much higher quality. Skillshare is in my view really a waste of money.
I agree. There are lame classes there and excellent teachers too. The only difference being that you cannot upload your productions on UA-cam for review, but any intelligent instructor willing to generously offer his or her services for free, will provide a link to his or her website to upload our productions for review. So yes, I completly agree with you: I actually spend more time on UA-cam than on Skillshare... And I am a little disappointed by the fact that the Skillshare platform lacks the interactivity for reviewing our productions in depth. In the end, it is still "self-study". There is very little guidance. Example: you cannot really ask for clarifications. Nothing to do with actual online classes...
You are an amazing speaker, You are so confident and easy to understand. Well done, sir! I sit here and listen to your entire presentation knowing that it was a advertisement for the company that my wallet slipped out and I signed up - excellent sales pitch
Thank you for this video! I really loved hearing your feedback and your recommendations on how to do a little bit of research on multiple online learning platforms.
One thing i learned from teaching myself to draw is That an hour of learning from a competent teacher can be worth to dozens of hours of trial and errors. Im very much a kinesthetic learner, but a good course with a good teacher goes a very very long way. Also, when just starting out with a new topic, a class can give you enough basics to start asking the right questions. The hardest thing with a new material is not knowing what you don't know (and to know in order to advance)
Personally, I buy courses from Udemy when they are on sale. However, I write software so it is always nice to have a permanent reference and while tech does change every.... 5 or 6 seconds :).. it is nice to have that reference in case I forget something from time to time in a different language I haven't used in a while. However, I have been wondering about sub fees from platforms like skillshare so I do appreciate the honest review you have done. I don't think it would work for someone like me but I can see the point for many others. Thank you, sir
thank you very much for your review of skillshare I have done a lot of the free demos on skillshare. And this truly sparked my interest and want me to actually subscribe for a month.
I subscribe to Skillshare, I've used it for both professional (IT) and personal reasons. I feel like I get enough value out of it. my personal gripe with Skillshare(and Udemy for that matter) is that there is not qualification needed to post videos. so unless you take multiple of the same course, there is a lot of "begginer expert" going on.
I really liked this video. I liked that you spoke like a normal person, yeah maybe with some previously planned points to make, but not quite scripted. I really like this. You could be totally right or you could be wrong and you allow us to speak our own findings in your comments. This is fair and honestly brilliant, as so many others don’t even look at what it might be for us to be us. You have shaped your advice that it can work for us on various different levels. I feel like this opinion leads us to choose to, or to choose not to, on our own self advice. It is refreshing to find something that aims to recommend based on my wants rather than someone else’s. I will dive right into this, because of your candor Stay Frosty, Everyone ❄️💙❄️
I liked your video. Liked how I'm depth you got explaining all the differences. I can't speak for anyone else but for me I'm more apt to click on a video based on the words used to describe the thumbnail, more so then the thumbnail (photo) itself.

Dont bother, they kept charging me monthly long after i cancelled. Read about it, this happened to a lot of people. Actual scam
Hey guys, if youre looking for a skill to pick up a skill but dont really know what to learn, i heavily recommend you take a look into cryptocurrency trading (or stock investing in general) since the crypto market is booming hard right now and will be for the next few months. new ways to make money while sitting on your ass is always a smart idea ;) Maybe stay away from skillshare though people in the comments are saying theyre acting scummy and charging after canceling

New subscriber, like your channels concept and you seem really good at being clear at delivering key content.
Man your vids are really underrated especially the series of reviewing sponsored items/services
I never clicked so fast on a video of yours. I guess it's partly because I was waiting for this, and partly because your thumbnail was really cool.
Great video, really cute of you trying to learn about interior design!
Thank you for this video. I really needed an overview about Skillshare and what's positive and not so great about it.
The thumbnail for this video is actually really good!

I love your channel because I find you so relatable and human. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for your candidness and your honesty!!!
Excellent video Jimmy. I was on the fence on Skillshare but your video made me commit to a year subscription. Since I don't have much time to spare I think skillshare works for me better than youtube, even though I don't think I would ever ditch youtube to keep learning at all.
for my fellow poor people, lets start a list of good tutors, i start with
Java: alex lee 9/10
python: telusko 8/10
LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda) is often free with a library card, which is also free. Not always the most cutting edge, but it’s often a step up from UA-cam tutorials
I loved this review. It was honest and compared other options. I like hearing Jimmy talk - always has a smile on his face.
This is great stuff. I never really considered skillshare at all for anything. I'm trying to improve my coding skills so I'll definitely give skillshare a go. Thanks man, great stuff!
Great content! I'm thoroughly entertained by you reviewing product sponsorships, it helps me find out whether it's worth copping this stuff or not. Subscribed, please do more of these!
I want to thank you for making this video I’m about to look for a course that interest me to help me evolve in my own personal growth thank you again keep doing your thing you don’t know this but you helped out a person in need
The last two (including this one) thumbnails look awesome. I like this theme a lot
The audio, visuals and editing in this video are great :)
What you need to pay for is when you want the certificates only.
alright bet, gonna look into this when i get on my youtube/music/podcast/fashion/comedian/actor/multimillionaire grind. thanks for the honest review!
honestly like this channel and the reviews are great, appreciate your effort in making them.
Hey could you out these "I tried out" series in there own playlist

You are an amazing speaker, You are so confident and easy to understand. Well done, sir! I sit here and listen to your entire presentation knowing that it was a advertisement for the company that my wallet slipped out and I signed up - excellent sales pitch
Absolutely loved this review. Currently in lockdown in Sydney and was checking out education platforms. Really good review man!!!
Okey I’m learning a lot, that’s good
Also, your thumbnail is awesome, pretty good
Watching programming tutorials from old indian men is a classic that will never be replaced with SkillShare!
9:35 is a great point. It's hard to get a comprehensive education about something unless someone creates a playlist.
The hardest thing with a new material is not knowing what you don't know (and to know in order to advance)
thank you for this amazing video. I was looking to sign up for Skill Share and your review helped me out a lot :)
Jimmy, thank you so much for this advice. I think I may stick to UA-cam or actually learn what i want from a school.
Hi Jimmy...Thanks Brother...I handle yourself very well in front of the camera bro...high quality work
Personally, I buy courses from Udemy when they are on sale.
Loving your vids, hope to see you grow m8
I subscribe to Skillshare, I've used it for both professional (IT) and personal reasons. I feel like I get enough value out of it. my personal gripe with Skillshare(and Udemy for that matter) is that there is not qualification needed to post videos. so unless you take multiple of the same course, there is a lot of "begginer expert" going on.
Now we need videos on Masterclass, Great Courses Plus and Khan Academy.
I don't understand why such useful video views too low but those assed rap songs get millions of views in just a matter of day. so insane
You are kidding me! Your thumbnail, light and sound is awesome!!!!
I will dive right into this, because of your candor
Stay Frosty, Everyone ❄️💙❄️
Thank you, this really helped me make a decision about whether to try this out.
I liked your video. Liked how I'm depth you got explaining all the differences. I can't speak for anyone else but for me I'm more apt to click on a video based on the words used to describe the thumbnail, more so then the thumbnail (photo) itself.
I really love the way you review stuff. So much honesty and detail and you go over all the points I'd want to know about.
I just came across your channel. It's really informative! Keep up the good work, I hope your channel explodes with subscribers. Cheers!
I really like your reviews of these commonly advertised products, thanks!
This was such a valuable review. Helped a ton! Thanks!
Honestly you’d be a good teacher!
I learned pretty much what the website does.(: cool editing btw
