Geoff - I suppose I can never explain - how I keep coming back to this lady - I believe your tear is with many others (like mine) as we listen to her - I cannot put it any simpler. The beauty of the internet is the fact that you don't need a record player with the record in your household. You simply log on to this Iternet thingey - put your headphones on and dream to your heart's content. Take care.
@@WhisperedDreams951 Hi John. It’s the simplicity of the lyrics which gives the song a unique charm and an authenticity of how rural life was once lived. The song harks back to a time when people living in rural communities shared and enjoyed the simple things of life as well as maintaining traditional values of the church and family. For better or for worse, the relentless march of consumerism and modern technology, changed beyond recognition the lives of people who had hitherto enjoyed social interaction and a degree of cohesion which village life offered. Perhaps I’m looking back through rose tinted glasses, and being unduly sentimental, but I mourn the way of life that flourished just after the war, but now seems a distant memory. Best wishes. Geoff
Geoff M, I see no rose tinted glasses here - nay, more of a whispered thought of what once was. To turn the pages back of the book of life to a more sedate and recognisable sanity of being is a fantasy I and many would relish to dwell in our dreams - yet never spoken of. Perhaps a whim yet it's a secret we keep to ourselves, take care.
Thank you SO much for sharing this. I've had a clip of Maureen O'Hara singing this song on the Andy Williams Show here in the US in the 1950s. I was editor of her official website for over 20 years which has now transitioned to "Maureen O'Hara Magazine on Facebook" Just published my clip of her singing this song and and Irishman informed me about Delia Murphy and her writing this song. So - I shared the link to this address. It's absolutely wonderful. I just wish Maureen could have heard it. Bless you for sharing.
Good morning to you All 🎵☀️ hope you had a relaxing nights sleep 💤 1950 was a very good year as the youngest in our family was born, Charlie we play this regularly
A mystery solved: My introduction to this song was by way of a brief clip faded into at the end of a 12" mix of "Mandinka" back in 1988. As a DJ I sensed that it had a tradition bent but the information age was not yet upon us and this was a bone I wasn't going to let go of. Part of my mistake was searching with what repetition would lead one to believe was its title (Vanyon.) Of course this proved fruitless. It wasn't until tonight that it occured to me to enter the preceding words ("there are 3 lively lashes in...) and ending in "van" should a spelling error have been the root of my failure. Bingo! 3 video results presented themselves! The first proved I was onto something but the second was a clip in color with the song being sung alongside Bob Ross (?) Based on the fidelity of the sample used that was quickly ruled out but as they say the 3rd time is the charm. I was encouraged that the picture of the artist was in black and white and the final clue was the statement that the source recording was a 78 rpm. Thank you for relieving an old man of some earthly unfinished business. We all know what became of Molly Malone.
Iain, I'm currently at 990 subscribers, alas, the audience bless them - are sometimes fickle - some come and some go. As the auld enemy would say - cie la vie - and of course forever changing. I'm really heartened with the upsurge of a mature element in the blend of my followers. We should all take time out occasionally to enjoy the whispered whim of a heart-stopper. It's in our clamour for the medicine that is our escape and reminisce. I don the headphones and come back to this upload often.
@@WhisperedDreams951 I still have The Spinning Wheel by Delia in acetate, the same disc I used to play on our wind-up when a boy, usually looking for the sharpest needle in the little swing-out box. I've looked it out after finding this but not played yet - after all why wear it out more when your uploads are available!
❤lovely reminds me of my mother's voice she was a legend 😢
Memories of learning this song from my dear Auntie Bridie.
God bless you miss Murphy. Beautiful.

My grandad sang this to me and my 2 sisters in the early 70’s🩷🩷🩷
I remember this song as a boy. Thank you for posting it up here.
Thank you sir❗️
This still brings a tear to my eye, as it reminds of my dear departed father, who loved Delia Murphy’s recordings.

Have to say I've a soft spot for phelim Drew's version
An interesting lady who was a wife of the ambassador in Rome during 2nd world war where she helped Fr. Hugh O’Flaherty in rescuing people✅🇮🇪
