  • A contestant on 'The Price is Right' makes history! On Friday's episode, Patrice Masse placed a bid that came within just one dollar of the actual showcase total, winning him the double showcase. Host Drew Carey says it was 'the best showcase bid in the history of the show.' Patrice earned a grand total of $83,068 in prizes, which is the highest double showcase win of the season.

1:18 - “With no help from anyone in the audience…” as opposed to the time Terry bid a showcase exactly right after a super-fan named Ted knew the price to the dollar.
It caused a tape stop-down and upset Drew, because he thought the show was compromised and his career flashed before his eyes. His reaction to this “Historic Moment” was quite subdued and bemused as a result.
Clearly Carey is still not entirely over how hurt he felt from that, and I understand him proclaiming this the true “best bid ever”! I love his reaction here - nice touch giving Patrice the card.

Not the first time a CBS game show had its producers thinking that either. We ALL remember the legendary Michael Larson who studied the Press Your Luck patterns to make sure he always landed on the two spots that never had a Whammy and always awarded an additional spin, one of which had the top cash prize that was on the board, winning him north of 100k bucks (and Peter didn't even know of Michael's technique until years later). The Terry situation was similar to the way Michael Larson studied PYL back in the day.
This $1 difference bid would be like winning a million on the current PYL show's front game with the board patterns being completely randomized.

Of course, people have already forgotten that Terry Kniess hit it exactly on the nose back in 2008, with Drew Carey so convinced he cheated that there's utterly no enthusiasm or emotion in his voice at all while announcing it.
Despite the rumors he cheated or had help, though, it's never proven. As far as everyone knows, Kniess picked up on that TPIR reused prizes, memorized their cost, and essentially gamed the game. It also forced TPIR to cycle prizes much more frequently to prevent a repeat of it.
For those not in the know, look it up. It's an interesting tale.

The craziest thing about this (for ME, anyway)? OK, I almost never watch TPIR. I don't even remember which year it was (and not even sure if I'd get the correct DECADE right by guessing the 2010's) that I last tuned in to watch it at home. I am simply never, ever, ever up that early. But, NO: on that day, 06 June 2024, I turned the TV on at 10:51AM (concurrent with the East Coast showing, but an hour earlier here because we're on Central Time)...and the Final Showcase was JUST STARTING. I SAW THE WHOLE THING HAPPEN.
What would make me turn on the TV right at THAT minute, and on this one particular day? There's no conventional reason for it. In my mind it isn't even coincidence, but something else. So I've randomly had TPIR on at home only once or twice since maybe 2010, and I just happen to catch perhaps the most amazing few minutes in the history of the show!
I take this as a "sign of affirmation" from somewhere we don't fully understand, maybe that I'm "doing the right things" in life and to keep it up...I said this isn't a coincidence because this isn't an isolated incident! I seem to have two or three of these illogical (and almost always wonderful) things happen to me per year.
There was a nine-day period in 2016 that six or seven of these bizarre things happened, one after the other, and I assumed it was telling me that my one-decade-long agonizing on where to move would soon be resolved. Indeed, less than nine weeks later, moving to Chicago was decisive (made during a refreshing two-mile walk in very thick fog and 37 degrees F) and it took me only six more weeks to close on the place. It's one of the best decisions I ever made.
