Good facts video about Tales of Eternia, little fact I would like to bring since you mentioned the PSP version of the game. It was the second Tales of game to be released in Europe when it was released in 2006 the same way that the PSOne release back in 2001 was the second Tales of game released in America.
I love this game so much! I was so lucky to get a copy back in middle school. It has been not just my favorite Tales game but my favorite video game ever since. Yeah, I'm biased because nostalgia. But I don't care.
My childhood can't forgive any bashing on the voice acting. I'm shocked at the idea that it wasn't liked, even more that it was the thing that brings it down. I agree that it would have been better for them to have had access to the context of the other voices, now that I've thought about it, but I remain steadfast that each character has an amazing voice. Especially for the time, if you look at each character individually, they had supreme voice acting compared to most titles out there. Reid, Farah, Max, Undine, Galenos, etc. They all captivated me growing up. ...I will give you Meredy's Craymel-language speeches and toddler Keele/Farah, where Keele was just the same crying sound and Farah was her adult voice failing to be a child voice. But nothing else. Last thing, does anyone happen to know where to find the english voice cast list? Kevin Miller is actually the only english voice that's listed anywhere that I've looked.
exactly, there may be some exceptions with select scenes that may have not been delivered quite right, but i'd still say 90% of the game's direction was on point and was delivered really well. as a voice actor myself who understands inflection and context. people that say this game has bad voice acting really are... Well. Uneducated.
i really wish more games stuck to this linear combat style with same level of quality. this game's combat was the shit, and is still the shit. spiral attack into omega demon chaos rocks, and what? there are three more team members to add to the ass whooping? supreme kungfu punch kick combos, and crazy ass spells like explosion, ground dasher, and meteor swarm! wow this game just keeps on giving. But who are we going to deliver the ass whooping to? Hmmm, how about human warriors, wizards, giant bears, ogres, ghosts, skeletons, zombies, dragons, living armors, machine gun robots, deformed monsters, supreme elemental beings, the god of destruction , and a giant electrical ball! cause why the fuck not? enemy variety and design is so freaking varied. freaking awesome game with tons of content. loved every damn second of playing this game. i still beat the game every once a year or two.
This will always be my favorite from the tales line...my love for keele will forever be alive. Makes me sad that this game didnt even come to psn...so many amazing ps1 games deserve to be there.
I knew all of these except the Tekken reference, I can't believe I missed that especially since they made Jin a djinn! I've played this too many times to count both in Japanese and English (for all who don't like the English voices, the Japanese cast is iconic and definitely worth listening to), but seeing this is making me want to play it again. For the most part I've dropped off the series since I've been so disappointed with the recent entries, and at this point a remake of Eternia might be the only thing that could bring me back. It wasn't my first Tales game by any stretch, but it is my favorite. This game had so much heart and charm, I wish they would put this kind of effort into stories, characters, and world-building again. If they gave this game the Destiny treatment and polished it up with love and attention to all the tiny details (and maybe since Leon got it, an added option to play it from Ras' perspective since the player has to really dig to find out the slightest things about him and he's actually a fascinating character with things that connect him to Reid's and Meredy's past) I would come running back home to the franchise.

However i do believe firmly and wholeheartedly that the complaints against the voice acting in the American version were greatly GREATLY exaggerated and blown out of proportion. 8 times out of 10 the voices and deliveries are spot on and convey the emotions in the scenes just fine, but yes there are a select few scenes where some dialogue's could have used a re-read but to dismiss and claim that the dub is on the level of say Megaman 8, or the original Resident Evil. They are out of their fu***** Minds. I dont know if you are aware but we had an interview with Kevin Miller (Reid Hershel) from the American dub sometime back to explain how things worked then and we used snippets of that interview in our History Episode about Eternia. If it's not obvious. Eternia's our favorite of the franchise as well and Yes it has been difficult continuing as a fan with the recent entries failing to blow our minds but more on them later. Absolutely, the complaints make it sound much worse than it is. I did hear your interview and it makes sense, it's unfortunate that that was par for the course for the era. When this game came out, most English dubs weren't quality, they were just all I had so I could listen to them, but Eternia does do better than others at the time. For instance, Sailor Moon used to be my jam in the 90's and early 2000's and I didn't think about the acting because I thought the show was fun, but I can't stand to listen to it in English now. That's not the case for Eternia, I still really enjoy playing it in English. How could I not? While I can't prove it, going by ear Shizel is definitely Lynne Thigpen (The Chief from Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, super nostalgic and cool). And no one really gives credit to Meredy's actress, but she's the exact English equivalent to Omi Minami. It's not the best dub I've ever heard, but that being the only complaint most people have of it just speaks for how good of a game it is. I do personally like the Japanese cast better because I have a HUGE soft spot for Reid's, Farah's, and Keele's voice actors since they are in so many of my favorite shows and my Japanese isn't bad so the language barrier isn't a problem for me. For fans who don't understand Japanese, the English version's translation is very good and the acting is no where near as bad as people say. I've been enjoying the content, so you'll see me around. I'm not deep into VA industry, but I kinda disagree on this one. The English VA sounds REALLY good compared to the usual English dub shenanigans. They doesnt do the "high-pitched super excited" kinda things as much (outside of meredy, which used to adds sense of alien dialect). Idk if it's just nostalgia because it's one of my first PSX video game and the very first game I completed 100% and tried to speed run, but Japanese VA sounds a bit too "child-ish" sounding, which probably very accurate since they're basically bunch of young teenager. In comparison, Sarah's skill delivery has quite an impact, while Japanese sounds really flat As for Eternia "remake", I doubt remake will do any of the justice, since usually they changed too much and God forbid they made it as 3D combat. A more crisp graphic with 4k support and *GRADE STORE* feature would be enough
So. Bit of a story. I’ve already been a huge Tales fan for a long time. I watched this video late last year and this game’s style heavily piqued my interest. I recently got my hands on an imported UK copy of the PSP version (along with a copy of the GBA Tales of Phantasia: RIP wallet.), and I’m having a great time with it. Thanks for the vid guys; It alerted me to a great gem I’ve been missing out on.
I love the voice acting in this game (maybe I'm the only one lol) but I do admit that it has problems in some cutscenes. I just love the game overall and I still play it to this day :D
I was shocked at the idea that it's KNOWN for being bad. I think the voice acting is incredible. But yeah, once you think about it, some cutscenes make more sense when you realize that they didn't have the context of the other voices that came before their lines.

Love Eternia, my favorite 2d Tales. Lots of these facts I did know but was fun learning new things. Didn't know Reid/Sly's VA was the one in charge of the process, it's a shame he hasn't returned as Reid. Considering the era, genre and I'd assume budget, Eternia's English voice work isn't really insufferable or anything. While yeah, line delivery can be awkward sometimes, the actual voices themselves all match pretty perfectly to the characters in all honesty. Especially with Farah, can't hear anyone else telling me "No Problem!" as charmingly as her va does lol
Thanks for the video, guys! Eternia has always been one of my favorites, and it makes me sad when the fans who jumped on board with Symphonia talk crap about it. I give this one a replay every couple of years, though these days I opt for the undubbed PSP patched version.

One more thing, I don't remember if this happens in a glitch in game through skills panel or with a GameShark, but anyway, while in the panel of skills you can do a glitch to use all skills and magic of the game, and crash the game sometimes, be careful, but the thing is, the more you go deep in that glitch, more strange gets, and the most strange of all is one skills name "beat the game less than 15 hours with the colosseum complete".... I swear is not fanfic or my imagination or lies, I'll try to do one more time someday and see if I can find anything, by the way I completed the game in less than 15 hours with the colosseum complete, and of course nothing happened

Even Doh THE REAL Masterpiece Of The Tales Games Was Made 4-5 Years Later, This Is Still An AMAZING Game, Cause MAN This Was HUGE A Game Changer In The Series, I Think Is Pretty Underrated If U Ask Me, Also, I Used Keele ALOT In Rays & I LOVE His Play Style In That Game... yes. yes it is. Both are great versions but sadly the PSP version has No multiplayer and the shoulder attacks are trickier to bust out in combat because of the psp's lack of buttons. But graphically the PSP is a stronger system that can make the game run 60fps smooth
some emulators such as duckstation, have a texture filtering option called xbr, when turned on, the game can look like this. i'm not sure if this filter is available in other platforms.
Yeah, the anime is weird. I love me some Tales ladies and good fanservice so I was absolutely entertained, but yeah storywise its such a weird but still interesting departure. As you said, definitely something to check out just for curiosity's sake, if you aren't bothered by cheesecake at least
Ok, so I found out recently that the PS3 can play PS1 games no problem- which means, if I can hunt down copies, I can play the PS1 versions of both Destiny and Eternia! Though I do have a huge backlog, but really, that is a good problem to have.
5: Man it's been forever since I've seen this anime. Looking at it again I forgot how different the character designs were. 1: Did the PSP version in Europe get new voice acting or did it just get voice acting from the NA version?
Yes all the voice acting is the same. and despite a few magazines saying they didn't like it, we strongly urge new players to listen for themselves. while yes SOME scenes had some lines that were delivered out of context, MOST of the game was acted really well!. honestly the very very few scenes that have questionable direction would be like condemning the kingdom hearts series because Sora makes that dumb smile in the first game or giving up on metal gear because it has occasional 4th wall jokes.
Take a look at Jay RPG’s video about the Tales series the developer’s were going to remake. I really hope that Tales of Eternia / Destiny 2 will be one of them!! This was honestly the best tales series ever!!!! Please do everything to make this happen!
its just a port, same exact game just optimized for 60 fps smooth cuz PSP is better tech as well as some of the visuals being open gl enhanced for smooth sprites and 3d models. either way you can't go wrong. i still prefer the PSX version for a few reasons, as well as multiplayer

They should have just released the PlayStation 2 on a single DVD. Just like how Fire Emblem Raident Dawn is technically a GameCube game.

Ok, so I found out recently that the PS3 can play PS1 games no problem- which means, if I can hunt down copies, I can play the PS1 versions of both Destiny and Eternia! Though I do have a huge backlog, but really, that is a good problem to have.

1: Did the PSP version in Europe get new voice acting or did it just get voice acting from the NA version?
Yes all the voice acting is the same. and despite a few magazines saying they didn't like it, we strongly urge new players to listen for themselves. while yes SOME scenes had some lines that were delivered out of context, MOST of the game was acted really well!. honestly the very very few scenes that have questionable direction would be like condemning the kingdom hearts series because Sora makes that dumb smile in the first game or giving up on metal gear because it has occasional 4th wall jokes.
I actually have the PS1 game myself, I was just asking out of curiosity. To me the voice acting in the game isn't that bad, just ok.

Take a look at Jay RPG’s video about the Tales series the developer’s were going to remake. I really hope that Tales of Eternia / Destiny 2 will be one of them!! This was honestly the best tales series ever!!!! Please do everything to make this happen!

its just a port, same exact game just optimized for 60 fps smooth cuz PSP is better tech as well as some of the visuals being open gl enhanced for smooth sprites and 3d models. either way you can't go wrong. i still prefer the PSX version for a few reasons, as well as multiplayer
