The Chimney to Pamola Peak, Baxter State Park | Winter Ice Climbing Trip Chimney Pond

- It’s always a pleasure to visit Baxter State Park, and in winter, climbing out of Chimney Pond makes for true adventure.
Our itinerary included Waterfall Gully, Cilley-Barber, and traversing the Knife Edge. Per usual, weather and conditions dictated what we would climb. Park Rangers added, we’d also be the first party to climb anything this season.
Chimney pond lost over 20 inches of snow in the January thaw. We found ice routes very thin or out; approaches and descents very bony and slow moving. Snow travel firm and fast.
We climbed The Chimney, bagging Chimney Peak and Pamola Peak, returning to Chimney Pond via Dudley Trail.

Mark Vanover thanks Mark!
Planning on taking the Chimney Gully up this winter with my friend. Any tips? How was route finding? Were there any sections that were vertical climbing, or was it mostly a steep grade snow incline?
You’ll have no issue route finding. Route conditions are directly linked to snow conditions. As you can see this trip we had mixed climbing. On other trips I’ve walked down the gully after climbing routes like Ciley-Barber.
Awesome
flippin get it
Whacked flapping hood at 7:40, how about you guys look out for each other? If you see a person's equipment out of order, tell them and fix it for them! That hood has tie cords, use them. 8:24 - NOBODY is smiling.
Yes. Conditions were quite rugged, but as you can see we’re all together, so yes we’re looking out for each other. His hood is flapping as the wind pulled the helmet off his head just before I started recording. He’s going to retrieve it when he approaches me at 8:24.
Hey do you remember which date you did the climb ?
I posted this video a few days after we did it.
Matty Bowman sweet thanks man !
