How has it taken me this long to discover this video?!? I think Peter Capaldi is the perfect narrator for these sort of mini-documentaries and I really felt I engaged with what was being said.
So great to see a programme on Surrealism. As I love Dali's work.. So great that it was Peter Capaldi talking about it, he's a superb actor(and will be a great Doctor, I just know it), very knowledgable and I've seen his fan art for Doctor Who, it's pretty brilliant. Thank you for this. Very well presented.
I love surrealism! I spend a lot of time on deviantArt in traditional art > paintings > surreal and traditional art > drawings > surreal. Love busy chaotic, pieces and abstract pieces too! It's fun to explore them and see what they bring to mind, what messages they have for me. Let your eyes unfocus sometimes and you'll see other things too.
Which is why it isn't relevant anymore. People who think prancing around like Ziggy Stardust is still breaking boundaries need to be sent back to the sixties. Freedom has changed, it's way more real now.
Then surrealism becomes 'surrealer', there is always something that will seem surreal no matter what time period. Of course something surreal in the the 30s may very well be real now, and, like you said, negates it's effect. But still there's always something surreal, whatever the time may be.
Google made me do it I think it's less that it's irrelevant, more that art forms as a whole have embraced surrealism to the point where it has become synonymous with the term "artsy." Arguably that means it has more of a social impact now than before, since it is so widespread, but leaves less of an individual impact since we are so used to it.
Was Freud right? should art have taken this route? By talking about deconstructing the subconscious, Freud accidentally got people to merely illustrate and celebrate it. 'Oh well, nobody's perfect' as Marcel Duchamp would say. I can listen to Peter Capaldi all day, he has those eyes that say, 'Pay attention, or you will stand for the remainder of the lesson.'
Cut it out, burn a CD, put it in an player and press "auto repeat" But I would like to have "apple" "head" and "birds", too on it! So, that's what I did ....
My friend said that once they played a video about surrealism in class, and then she squealed because it was presented by Peter Capaldi. I'd squeal too but I'm not in the same year level to learn about surrealism 😅unfortunately
Oh I remember how this helped me out in art school! Way better explained than my teacher. Well, honestly, I could listen to Peter Capaldi talk all day. And my favourite Doctor talking about art is just the best thing ever! He should definitely narrate more stuff! Love his voice
Hieronymus Bosch - it seems like there is a conspiracy in the art world to pretend that he was not 'surrealist' even though he nailed it 400 years before the movement began. That's like pretending 21st century hipsters invented beards.
@@hookbeak3516 It's just an internet thing people say when they want to express disagreement I guess, like breaking your own 4th wall. You could just look it up on UA-cam I bet there are some compilations about that
Thank you Doctor, can not wait for August!! Make him dark Peter make him dark...let's see what the Doctor's subconcious dreams/nightmares are made of please!
lol I was pretty prophetic a bit eh? However I wasn't that impressed with "listen"..if you notice when in Rupert's bedroom the blanket pulls off, there is something there that doesn't look human.(pefully more development on that later in seaon).plus how did the doctor's "wards" not know the tardis was in the barn, nor did The High Council notice a incursion stamp the way they noticed he appeared in the Day of the Doctor"...Or not remembering Clara's talk to him at bedside?? or the toy solder??? .I know I'm reading to much into it hehe..but I love the show and want the writing to be as tight as possible.. I have a bad feeling this season will go down in flames if they don't start showing some serious Doctor development..so far it's been chaotic at best..and the episodes are not that great either.. But I say this as loudly as I can, it is not Peter Capaldi's fault, the fault lies with the writing/scripts given. I hope by midseason it gts turned around. I really do.(let's hope this prophecy bears true as well hehe}
An appetiser of a documentary certainly food for thought at 3.71 minutes long from 5.06 its a bite size amount to digest, but you remember how good it tasted. I was fortunate to once see Dali's Metamorphosis of Narcissus at Tate Modern, London 2004.
Art is birthed in the unconscious body and heart. That is the home of our innermost treasures of psychological exploration and discovery; the phantasmagorical journey to the quintessential amorous fragility of life. All else is cerebral, linear and logical; the critical mind wants to define and categorize and sequester us from unity into one conscious field. One day we will become whole, and if that terrifies or unnerves you--perhaps you are more alike than apart--just atoms 'n' stuff of the void coming to its own head. Judgement represses character development, does nothing in the long-haul to keep us separate, so free the mind and realize there is no such thing as 'assets / ownership' or control'--it just is. .
The whistling music at the end says "Western". I was hoping this would be much longer. Pick up The Shadow And It's Shadow. Surrealist Writings On The Cinema. By Paul Hammond. Lots of great stuff in it. Now get off my zombie, you're blocking his glacier!
I could listen to Capaldi explain things for hours, tbh.
The Doctor should really narrate more documentaries.
Note the suit. Narrators always wore great suits.
So I guess the Doctor wanted to start his Curator career early?
Thumbs for those that watched the day of the Doctor lol

Nice to hear one the doctor’s legendary lectures from series 10
We need Peter Capaldi back. Best Doctor ever. )-;
What?! No! David tannent was the best
@@orinattiv No Capaldi was Better!!
capaldi was the best.
I need to d a video presentation on Surrealism. I really wasn't expecting the Doctor to help me out on this.

Looking for surrealism ideas and found the Doctor great :D His voice is so nice~~
I can relate intensely
Nicole Song yeah, right! The Doctor never ever speaks like that. (At least, I've never heard any Doctor talk of sex!)
+Melissa Hash also his voice is deep and rumbling, and he has a great accent :P
Literally one of the doctors lectures
Surrealism is life.
YES
The Doctor could narrate anything and I would listen
Love ❤️ Capaldi

His voice, the way he speaks and articulates every single word is very soothing. How can you not like the Scots?! :)
Haven’t seen this video in a while. Thought I’d be back to hear Peter capaldi’s dulcet tones.
Life nowadays is much more surreal than surrealism ever was, which dilutes it's effect. It's hard to imagine the impact it had in the 30's.
Which is why it isn't relevant anymore. People who think prancing around like Ziggy Stardust is still breaking boundaries need to be sent back to the sixties. Freedom has changed, it's way more real now.

He's having sex with my ear. His voice is so fucking sexy.
Actually... keep going Peter.
Surreal visual art is the best kind, so interesting.
Let Peter Capaldi return as the Great Curator !

Why is the quality SO DAMN GOOD? I mean, this channel only has 97 thousand subscribers and the quality is on par with a MILLION subscribers! Wow!

Bosch and Brueghel as well
I learned about all of this in Art history class. Sophmore year of highschool.
And did anyone catch he wearing his Doctor Who Outfit... well not really but close..
Change his coat to velvet and then it would basically be his then future outfit.
Capaldi speaks and I have to listen. Simple as that.
"Freud believed the primary motivation for all things in life was sex"
Me, an asexual: *looks at the camera like I'm on The Office*
Sex, or lack thereof ?
Could you explain line two a little more? Perhaps appreciation of The Office is required, but then there's the U.K & U.$ version.

Who better than the Doctor to explain surrealism?
Amazing explanation and video editing, definitely easier to memorize and learn
BET will play the Doc EXACTLY like this.
Unfortunatly , he did not!
Doktor Who except he did
When he’s explaining things he plays it like this, most evidently at the beginning of before the flood
This is an excellent peek into the unconscious machinations of our minds...
The Doctor is high as fuck, explaining arts and sh-- ... oh wait, he is always explaining shits. but still awesome
Sound Design for this video was awesome!
He is doing it as 12 ❤️❤️
12th Doctor rlly just assumed the identity of 'Actor Peter Capaldi' so he could make a video about surrealism, chad
Man, this was really informative. Me studying Art and History, this was so useful! Simply awesome!

I wonder how Sigmund Freud would have reacted to the AI-generated videos we have today. They capture surrealism perfectly.
