Even I explained same thing to my friends More speed = more concentration so we get tired easily. If we ride in 70 or 80 we cover more distance and enjoy the ride with out being tired

🤗The same advice applies when modifying or adapting your bike. My first improvement was a better front brake - 80kph to zero is more important than zero to 80! Self preservation😉
I tested riding fast vs riding slow on various trips... The time difference is insignificant overall. For 20-30 min earlier its really not worth it. Good tips Pavlin.

Hi Pavlin, thank you very much for this video. I agree with you on all points. In winter 2018/19 I bought a new navigation device and have used it for over 22,000km since then. During tours we mostly drive small back roads and only a few federal roads (no off-road). The average speed over the entire distance was 54 km / h. I wish you a good time and lots of nice experiences on your tours.

Pavlin, I agree with you totally. What is the purpose of the trip? Is it to get there safely and see as much as possible - that is my kind of trip. Is it to get there as soon as possible? Go by jet! Is it to twist the throttle - why not just ride on a race track and stay home? Ride safely and see more.
Great conclusion, Pavlin! What really matters is to maintain a high average speed, not a high top speed. This way the engine performance is more consistent, the fuel economy is greater and you are staying safe. I always try to ride at more or less constant speed and enjoy the ride, than to push myself and my bike.

You are right, the speed is not important during a trip, I sold my xtz660 and bought the T7 and for me it's a dream, just a little more power you need and this bike is easy to work on it, low consumption. For me the T7 is the best bike for travelling. Keep save.

Depends on the bike you ride. Lets say you're riding a sport touring bike all day I feel like doing 70-100 is a bit slow. Not enough speed to push the chest up and get stress of the hands. Optimal is 120 kmh, above that the wind just beats you up too much. Adventure touring, I'm most comfortable at 100ish. If you really want to cover a lot of km it is best for you to go alone because you simply have to stop less and ride at your own pace.
Thanks for your video. You catch just the true meaning of traveling on an motorcycle. I have also friends who always asks how many kilometers I have travel this season! He has always made more km than us others in less days. If he is happy with that so ok but I will never travel with him of course.

Hi Pavlin 6 years ago I was at work. One fellow worker asked me how fast my motorcycle can go I said it goes the speed limit thinking it was a good answer. He pushed even harder asking what the top speed of my bike. I said I didn't know and do not care to know. He started to call me names and degrade me I said I didn't care what he said. I enjoy the ride the smells and the time I spend riding around the countryside. The person rode a croch rocket and was in 3 accidents all about speed. The third accident he broke ribs and missed work for a few weeks that pissed off the boss and he was gone. He blamed the accidents for bad driving from the other drivers. You drive the speeds that feel comfortable to you do not try to keep up with the pack. You will get comfortable with speed as time go on it a given. Stay safe, happy trails. Cheers.
Great video Pavlin! Only thing i'd like to add is 1) A lot of bikes engines have a certain resonance point so riding for example in 5 gear and 90 on some bike can vibrate more and make the rider more exhausted at the same time 85 or 95 the resonance point does not affect the rider. 2) On the highway it's good to keep the speed a bit faster than the semi trucks ride, so YOU overtake them, cause it's not a safe idea riding 70 km/h on the highway with semi trucks coming from behind overtaking you all the time. And for all other varieties it's better to go slower, less fuel consumption, you see more and safer. Every year I take a 1 day trip 360 km, I rode slower to the destination but faster on the way home. Noticed on the way back i came 20 minutes faster, but almost had 2 accidents and was exhausted due to wind that i had to take a 30 minute longer time to rest )))) So no need to go too fast )))
Actually it helped a lot. Riding/stopping etc. 50-60kmh average speed makes sense riding on roads. Bike doesn't matter. Now I can plan accordingly 500kms/day = 9-10 hours on the bike. Thanks Pavlin!
Great video, I currently am looking to by my first adventure bike, I have experience on a dirt bike, and did not really know if I should go for a BMW GS 310 or a BMW GS 700(older model) but I think after this video I decided on the GS 310. All I need to do now is convince my parents that I will be safe, and also need money to buy my first bike Thank you very much for this video
100% agree with your position on speed. There are appropriate times to twist the wick for enjoyment, but generally the speed is moderate and in control so as not to overwhelm your ability or your bikes capacity. Good post and enjoyable video. Ride safe my friend!
This reminds me of a story I have from couple years back. We were riding to a chopper festival - 2 young guys on touring bikes and 4 old guys on choppers. Of course old chopperheads were going only 80 and reaaaaaly slowing down into turns. The other young guy was having talks about speed for months now and this day I had enough of it. So I told him: we all know the road, so lets go 2 of us full throttle and we will wait for chopper guys there. After about 1,5h ride we arrived and we saved about 5 minutes :D But the talk finaly stoped. I like going with chopper guys because it is much more relaxed ride and I can enjoy scenary much more. Also these guys know such pretty places I would never find. Plus I started on chopper and had 2 choppers before :-)

Agreed! Thank you for the reminder because sometimes when on an open straight highway, the urge to speed is there. We do ride fast sometimes on open highways, but on winding roads and passing through towns, we'll ride at lower speed. Less tiring and definitely safer. Not worth taking more risk just to save a few minutes and most of all missing the surrounding & not enjoying the journey. Constant speed is better as you said.
On long trips in USA [ like Central Ore. to just in to west end of South Dakota apv 1,400 miles ] which I ride most every yr. But take different routs to get there and back home. I average 47 miles per hr. riding at 55 to 62 miles per hr. At that average speed I get to see the areas good. enjoy the trip, not dangerious, and fun on curves annd mountain roads !!
I'm with you Pavlin. I appreciate the scenery as I ride and 100-110kmh is a perfect speed for me on a good dry day. When wet, I simply adjust to the conditions. Around the 300km mark I will pull in and usually have a coffee. I like to be relaxed for the entire trip, thats what it's all about for me. I run a 2014 Vstrom 1000 and I have never had a problem with it. Enough power for all of my requirements. Great video as usual brother, thanks.
I completely agree I plan on mileage per day and then take as long as required to get there ensuring i have had a good time and avoided all motorways. It is relaxing and enjoyable and follows basically all that you have said in your video.
Very true. For example, Sports rider max 90, but min 30 because of misreading, road surface, resting etc etc. Average of the 2 speed is 60. Constant rider max only 70, but minimum only 50 because can assess and read road more accurately, less rest etc etc. Averages of the 2 speeds still 60. Science proves your point, I think. For my 70th birthday I rode my Harley Davidson Road King from Seattle to Chicago and back. On most days I set the cruise control at 85mph = 136kmh One day I rode 780 miles = 1,248kms.
Hallo Pavlin, I sold off my R1200GSA for one reason, I am riding too fast and missed the whole reason of riding on a journey. Now for touring solo I use the tiny 125cc Honda. It open up a whole new world of riding bikes to places and I realise there are more to see than just reaching a destination. I now use the Honda 125 for serious long distant travel and a Speed Twin for fun.
I don't have a lot of spare time. So I use highways regularly to get to an interesting destination. But even on highways I don't drive very fast. I drive 120 km/h max and make stops every 1,5 hour. Every first stop is very short for drinking and exercise. Every second stop is also for refuelling. Riding this way I can cover 1000 kms in one day without getting tired. On those days my average speed is between 80 and 90 km/h. But when I am at my destination and I'm riding in beautiful scenic areas the average speed drops significantly, averaging 200 km a day, max 300 km a day.

In India the board at the road side is always a good warning, be late than never late. Means your trip must end to the destination but not in hospital.
I used to be a rockclimber. Many times I heard people say about an accomplished climber that his or her climbing shoes must be very good (an expensive) just to watch the climber repeat the crux barefoot.
I have to agree with you. I live in the Philippines now and I use to ride with small groups of Filipino riders but they want to go so fast I never got a chance to enjoy the rides. I would get home completely unsatisfied with the ride I would not want to ride anymore. Now I ride alone my pace

Pretty sound advice.....When I went to Varna I went full gas 130-180 km/h untill Bulgaria, and then went max speed limit :))..... When I reached Varna I was a zombie :)).... I slept 2 hours :P. I'm planning to go slow and see everything ..... Seen the lavander fields only on the way back :D If you're planning to go nice speed to speed limits, I found that 300cc motorcycles (35-40 hp) are enough for most people.

Completely true. I often ride fast on motorways to get to the interesting places, but to a point. I only stop when I need fuel and then use the facilities / snack at the same time. I also don't speed so much as to burn a tank of fuel in 150km or to tire myself out. Long stops completely wipe-out and progress made when speeding.... You notice this when you get back on the road and after 30 minutes you pass the same lorry that you passed 3 hours earlier.... and he is only travelling at 90km/h.
Average speed is the key I take the trip 2 hours at time and maintain average speed of 100km/h on highways Every two hours I check my map, refuel, switch camera battery and take 15-20 break.

I agree with you in most terms... but... I often go only for 3-4 days ride... mostly I take the highway to reach the interesting point where the beatiful part of the journey starts as fast as possible, because driving only 100/110 on the highway is rather boring and makes me tired. I try to solve this distance with 130/140 - it is less boring, I have to take more care. It is not the time you are faster there... it is the boring driving at low speed. Of course it is completely different on normal countryroads I drive then. Mostly I know the routes on the highway, so that looking in the landscape makes no sense....
Yes whats the point , motor ways i do 80 ish after that you have to stop every hour to fill bike up Ive done it ! 100mph plus Hard work very hi fuel consumption, 70 to 80mph More that 40mpg so for me 150 miles to a tank And stop every 2 hours
On rural roads I ride at 80 to 90 kph and take short breaks at 1 hour intervals on long trips. On high speed highways I follow traffic but it is not as pleasant and more tiring.

Higher speed really eats up fuel. I find 80mpg at 60mph and not much over 50mpg at 80mph.
I can drive for 6hours on 80kmh roads
But just 1 hour on 120kmh highway makes me want to sleep

Agreed! Thank you for the reminder because sometimes when on an open straight highway, the urge to speed is there. We do ride fast sometimes on open highways, but on winding roads and passing through towns, we'll ride at lower speed. Less tiring and definitely safer.
Not worth taking more risk just to save a few minutes and most of all missing the surrounding & not enjoying the journey. Constant speed is better as you said.

On long trips in USA [ like Central Ore. to just in to west end of South Dakota apv 1,400 miles ] which I ride most every yr. But take different routs to get there and back home. I average 47 miles per hr. riding at 55 to 62 miles per hr. At that average speed I get to see the areas good. enjoy the trip, not dangerious, and fun on curves annd mountain roads !!

I'm with you Pavlin. I appreciate the scenery as I ride and 100-110kmh is a perfect speed for me on a good dry day. When wet, I simply adjust to the conditions. Around the 300km mark I will pull in and usually have a coffee. I like to be relaxed for the entire trip, thats what it's all about for me. I run a 2014 Vstrom 1000 and I have never had a problem with it. Enough power for all of my requirements. Great video as usual brother, thanks.

I completely agree I plan on mileage per day and then take as long as required to get there ensuring i have had a good time and avoided all motorways. It is relaxing and enjoyable and follows basically all that you have said in your video.

For example,
Sports rider max 90, but min 30 because of misreading, road surface, resting etc etc. Average of the 2 speed is 60.
Constant rider max only 70, but minimum only 50 because can assess and read road more accurately, less rest etc etc. Averages of the 2 speeds still 60.
Science proves your point, I think.
Perhaps all Tenere riders think the same way.

For my 70th birthday I rode my Harley Davidson Road King from Seattle to Chicago and back.
On most days I set the cruise control at 85mph = 136kmh
One day I rode 780 miles = 1,248kms.
Good result but only if you would like to proof that you can ride many miles. This is not my understanding on long trips.

Hallo Pavlin, I sold off my R1200GSA for one reason, I am riding too fast and missed the whole reason of riding on a journey. Now for touring solo I use the tiny 125cc Honda. It open up a whole new world of riding bikes to places and I realise there are more to see than just reaching a destination. I now use the Honda 125 for serious long distant travel and a Speed Twin for fun.

I don't have a lot of spare time. So I use highways regularly to get to an interesting destination. But even on highways I don't drive very fast. I drive 120 km/h max and make stops every 1,5 hour. Every first stop is very short for drinking and exercise. Every second stop is also for refuelling. Riding this way I can cover 1000 kms in one day without getting tired. On those days my average speed is between 80 and 90 km/h. But when I am at my destination and I'm riding in beautiful scenic areas the average speed drops significantly, averaging 200 km a day, max 300 km a day.

In India the board at the road side is always a good warning, be late than never late. Means your trip must end to the destination but not in hospital.

I have to agree with you. I live in the Philippines now and I use to ride with small groups of Filipino riders but they want to go so fast I never got a chance to enjoy the rides. I would get home completely unsatisfied with the ride I would not want to ride anymore. Now I ride alone my pace
Alone is maybe the best option to stay safe.
As long as your handlebars doesn't vibrate, that's the comfortable speed.
For some models it start from 40km/h

Pretty sound advice.....When I went to Varna I went full gas 130-180 km/h untill Bulgaria, and then went max speed limit :)).....
When I reached Varna I was a zombie :)).... I slept 2 hours :P.
I'm planning to go slow and see everything ..... Seen the lavander fields only on the way back :D
If you're planning to go nice speed to speed limits, I found that 300cc motorcycles (35-40 hp) are enough for most people.

Completely true. I often ride fast on motorways to get to the interesting places, but to a point. I only stop when I need fuel and then use the facilities / snack at the same time. I also don't speed so much as to burn a tank of fuel in 150km or to tire myself out. Long stops completely wipe-out and progress made when speeding.... You notice this when you get back on the road and after 30 minutes you pass the same lorry that you passed 3 hours earlier.... and he is only travelling at 90km/h.

Average speed is the key
I take the trip 2 hours at time and maintain average speed of 100km/h on highways
Every two hours I check my map, refuel, switch camera battery and take 15-20 break.

I agree with you in most terms... but... I often go only for 3-4 days ride... mostly I take the highway to reach the interesting point where the beatiful part of the journey starts as fast as possible, because driving only 100/110 on the highway is rather boring and makes me tired. I try to solve this distance with 130/140 - it is less boring, I have to take more care. It is not the time you are faster there... it is the boring driving at low speed. Of course it is completely different on normal countryroads I drive then. Mostly I know the routes on the highway, so that looking in the landscape makes no sense....

More that 40mpg so for me 150 miles to a tank

On rural roads I ride at 80 to 90 kph and take short breaks at 1 hour intervals on long trips. On high speed highways I follow traffic but it is not as pleasant and more tiring.
