I will never forgive Harmonix for killing rhythm gaming in the west by oversaturating the market with sequel after sequel of Guitar Hero and pretending it was revolutionary despite Guitarfreaks having already been around for almost a decade by the time the first GH was made. And for making sure beatmania never caught on here in the states.
....Harmonix didn't oversaturate the market, Activision basically were the ones that did Guitar Hero and the majority of Western rhythm games in. Harmonix only made the first three Guitar Hero games (considered the best and highest selling in the series, which kick-started the rhythm gaming craze in the West/Worldwide), and then they left Activision to make Rock Band, another critically-acclaimed western rhythm game that had each iteration (including the spin-offs) spaced out over a few years thanks to it's DLC structure. GH, on the other hand, were putting out sequels, expansions, and spin-offs yearly and so condensed to the point that they released 11 games within a fiscal year out of the series. This beatmania game wasn't really ever going to give the series a good boost, the mechanics were too strict for most normal audiences to understand, and the controller might not be as ergonomic as intended, but it was at the very least an attempt to bring in a different flavor into the American market. Guitarfreaks wouldn't have made a splash in the American market either, the game mechanics are almost similar to beatmania except the screen was inverted so that the notes would fly upward, but the timing window was a little less stricter than beatmania's. GF and DrumMania probably couldn't be ported over to the West (for unknown/probably licensing issues), so basically Guitar Hero was what we got, but for what it was worth, the game basically filled that need to the point of where it was at it's high point (a cult classic).

Fuck this review, I'm a ancient IIDX player, AND THIS GAME, CAME OUT WAY LONG BEFORE GUITAR HERO! HOW EVEN THEY CALL IT A LAME GUITAR HERO RIPOFF? Pretty much all rhythm games have loads of sequels. Beatmania IIDX has 24 games.

AND THIS GAME, CAME OUT WAY LONG BEFORE GUITAR HERO! HOW EVEN THEY CALL IT A LAME GUITAR HERO RIPOFF?
IT'S A RHYTHM GAME WITH REALLY DIFFERENT CONCEPTS AND DESIGN! IT REALLY DIDNT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH BAND ROCKS, Except for the rock genres of the musics sometimes...
But it's not a ripoff of GH! Besides like, GH came out in 2000(?) I dont quite remember, but Beatmania came out in 1995!
And damn LOL
They even didnt played 7 keys mode! What a shame.
I guess when you get so fat off ad revenues, you don't need quality--or, for that matter, honest reviews--anymore; X-Play's review of _beatmania_ was *way* off.
