I think it was more that for the longest time it was treated as a joke. People saw the awkward selfies with the uncomfortable teenagers, heard about the feet stuff, and went "Ah, it's the internet being the internet, seeing shapes in the clouds"

Fun fact: the longest piece of English literature is a fan fiction called the Loud House revamped, by James Dean Knudson.
It’s a self insert fan fiction where J.D meets the Loud Family and goes on a lot of bizzare adventures and even visit many other shows like Naruto, Ed Edd n Eddy, MLP, Hazbin hotel, Adventure time, and Family guy.
Also JD is like a god or something. It’s insane.
It ended as of this February, but there is a sequel to it called TLH revamped 2: Embodiment.
Edit: here is some things that happen in this to give you a sense of how bizzare this is:
Bowser sacrifices himself to defeat Thanos
Peter Griffin gets erased from existence 3 times
The main characters get their own harem
The Winnie the Pooh blood and honey trailer is used as a weapon against bad guys
Several Pokémon and a few Digimon become alcoholics
Springfield, Quahog, and South Park are blown up. Like the whole city.
And to cap this off, they fight slenderman in chapter 493. Yes, this is real.

I was honestly kinda shocked how new some of this stuff was to some people, I mean obviously not all of it and some of it wasn’t proven or anything but I was surprised when people started texting me and stuff saying “did you hear about all this?!” and like I’ve known about it at least in some detail for years. I assumed it was more common knowledge than it actually was.

No but for real, I was surprised at how shocked people were at the documentary considering that literally all of this information except Drake Bell coming forward as the victim in that one specific case has been available for years. The only thing that the new documentary did was repackage it all and put it on a more accessible platform.

I didn't know about this Quinton guy, but I Shure already knew about the whole Nickelodeon debacle because there's a variety of UA-camrs talking about it and we'll behind the scenes videos, to the point I was flabbergasted that Nick just ignored the whole thing with Schneider. But it's good that finally someone made the situation be carried with serious attention to the man.

I think there’s like internet knowledge then there’s like knowledge knowledge, like how everyone knew that Bruce Willis was making terrible films because he was losing his memory then Bruce Willis’ family came out with saying that Bruce Willis was retiring because he was losing his memory.
Honestly the most surprising thing about this Nickelodeon thing is that I had no idea what Dan Schneider looked like and I had no idea he looked like an extra from The Disney Channel, like why is he dressing and having hair like a 13 year old when he’s like 12 years older than my dad. Dude’s like 79.
