For anyone wondering, the chronology for the mainline games are:
Metroid (NES) / Metroid: Zero Mission (GBA - The remake) - 1
Metroid II: Return of Samus (Game Boy) / Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS - The remake) - 2
Super Metroid (SNES) - 3
Metroid Fusion (GBA) - 4
Metorid Dread (Switch) - 5
The Metroid Prime series are canon, but have their own story arc. They are situated between 1 & 2.

I am impressed what Mercury Steam did with the Metroid franchise.
Metroid Dread has shown us how the Spanish studio has improved since their Castlevania Lords of Shadow Days.
