    the difference between DFX and SWG is: SWG is made for illustrator type programs and support gradients and other graphic specific stuff but the vectors will still work in 3d programs. DFX is pure vector and support hatches and other CAD specific stuff :) but for importing a vector shape both will do just fine. One note might be that the DFX support higher precision than SWG but this will only matter in very specific cases and shouldn't worry you too much :)

    I am new to using the Fusion 360 as a cad/cam... Everything is completely simple to understand if you have a foundational understanding of what info a cad/cam needs from you to complete the project.
    The issue is with most software (including Fusion 360) is that the designer of the software injects their bias into it. Basically all the stuff they have worked with is what they see as a priority so those features are very well cultivated..
    I have the latest Fusion 360 installed and I challenge anyone to find a V-Bit!
    You could pick a bit and create your gcode no problem, but if you want to cut a precise part you need to know what bit you are using. There is no point in sending this Gcode to your machine until you have that Bit dialed in to you cad/cam.
    No tutuorial is complete without a very detailed explination of how to create your own bits..

    Thank you so much for your help, Lars! I was trying for a long time to use "engrave" to set up CAM, but Fusion 360 just kept saying "Toolpath is not supported for the given tool and settings", but then when I followed your advice to use trace, it worked like a charm! I cannot thank you enough 😄

    I was kind of depressed before I turned on your video. Lars your awesome. you said if this doesn't interest you kick back take the day off. that's really fun Lars. you always have a bright attitude. I like watching your videos. I'm sure you help a lot of people. I know you like what you do, and It's hard to find people who can keep up with playing with our toys. people scratch their heads and say Huh? when I try to get them as excited as I am about design and building cnc machines. LOL your the man Lars. keep up the great work. your my "go to guy" when I want to know all the tricks.

    Converted a lot of art and logos to CNC cut paths for lasers in the past for commercial signage. Nationsbank is one that is still around. Hard to find art that has good smooth path lines to cut. All the transitions had to be tweaked for flame polishing the acrylic push through glass with the laser as you cut it. One jagged cut ruins it. The same CNC paths I created were also used for routers and vinyl cutters. DXF rules for machine variability.
    Glad to see I'm not the only only that gets the inverted view on creating a sketch. That and zooming off the screen to somewhere else... crazy reaction from the software. Show me whats in the view not some random upside down point of view from where I'm working. lol

    Windows TrueType fonts are stored in a vector format naively; it's why you can create a 500 pt block of text and not have pixelation in programs like Word. If Fusion is converting your text to a raster format that's just silly.

    • @ryanmacewen511
      @ryanmacewen511 5 років тому +2

      My thoughts exactly.. True Type fonts work as PostScript. I'm confused by this mention of 'windows fonts'. Great video otherwise. I use TT fonts in Corel Draw always. They scale as vector, and can be converted to vector art easily as well. I've only seen rastering on a Windows screen, which isn't from the font itself.

    • @BrainSlugs83
      @BrainSlugs83 5 років тому +1

      @@ryanmacewen511 as a developer, I can tell you, in a normal windows desktop application, it's in vector format the entire life of the text (even after you blit it, because it can still be scaled and transformed cleanly in GDI, as long as you're not blitting it to a rasterized destination). The part that rasterizes it, and converts it to pixels is like one of the last steps in the pipeline, and you generally have no interaction or business lurking around there...

    I'm wondering about your final discussion regarding engraving on a curved surface. You say you would need a 5-axis CNC. I wonder if it is possible to approximate the effect with a regular CNC. Is it possible to define a curved surface and then do a recess of the letters from that surface? You would get a consistent depth for the letters, although they would be a distorted because the bit would be moving in the Z axis only, not normal to the curved surface. If the curve was fairly shallow it might still come close to what the 5-axis would give you. Any thoughts?

    The "engrave" feature lacks multi depths, i.e. telling the machine to dig only 0,1mm each run. If you want to engrave 3mm it goes the full 3mm and the drill bit brakes.

    At about the 26 minute mark in the video there is an object with a curved top. Kind of shaped like a large aspirin tablet. You mention that to carve on top of that a 5 axis mill would be used keeping the cutting tool perpendicular to the surface of the work as it cuts. Makes since since the action of the cutting tool and the cut would change if the tools only moved along a Z axis. I will not likely ever have the funds for a 5 axis mill. So if my surface has only a slightly curved top, and I use a small cutter, would I be able to use a 3 axis mill? I would of course have to deal with some distortion in the cut which could hopefully be minimized by using a small tool. Example, engrave the letters “COLT” on Colt SAA revolver grips or 1911 pistols grips.
    Your videos on Fusion 360 have been very helpful.

    OK i've watched further into the video now... Can you export the 'simulation' as a body? that would totally work for me. then I could engrave a flat part and finally export the 'engraved' resulting body for 3d printing (as a pattern).

      You can use CAM->3D-> Project to Trace on a Curved surface. SVG has improved a lot with the recent flip options. Here's a cool tip. If you create something in Adobe Illustrator and you want the size to remain perfect use: 1.333167 as your scaling option. Maybe Fusion could build that in somehow.
      +Lars
      What I'd love is if 3D Project had an Engrave option. This is really helpful if you need to change the engraved text from part to part. Having to offset the face of the body (and create a new body for each text variation) is a real pain. So - engraving serial numbers on a curved surface is currently really tough (unless I don't know the trick). Thank Lars for all the great help!

    Lars, will the fusion team ever make a post processor for the Vision Engravers software? I have to use there really clunky VisionPro cam software at work now but I would love to start using F360 cam instead! Could you put in a good word?

    Can you do a raised prism carving? I mean, text with "prism extrusion" in CAM sort of speaking?
    I'm talking about this: www.vectric.com/sites/default/files/in-software-imagery/prism.jpg

    I have followed this word for word and cannot get the toolpath to be in the center of the text like in the 22:30 part of the video. I have changed fonts, sizes, bits and Press pull depths. Trace and engrave all follow the outline of the letter only! Any ideas of what I am doing wrong?

      compensation of? try a slot pattern maybe, this always defaults to the center of geo.

    • @rickcperry
      @rickcperry 5 років тому +1

      @@Juxtaposed1Nmotion Figured it out! Set the Bottom Height to Top Height minus the max amount you want the cutter to go down. Also make sure the tip diameter of the cutter isn't set to 0, mine is like 0.001 now and toolpath ends up perfectly!

    Hi do you ever use auto cad? I'm a welder fabricator and am looking to get in to this cad stuff . But most people I've spoke to say learn auto cad instead . But this programme seams more intuitive . Most of the people doing auto cad tutorials just go way to quick for me

      Hi J C Thank you for watching!
      I have not used Autocad in a long time. Many fabricators like Autocad because it is 2D. My Autocad guru is Lynn Allen, she rocks!

    Hello Lars,,, working heavily to get this stuff, i am slowly understand more and more, but i still NEW, and even with yours vids its still quite heavy stuff... soon i get a Snapmaker 1 there can carve up to 5 mm,,, it is possibly you can make a video how to setup and use Fusion and SM1 ala this video you did here, perhaps a demo where one make a new tool, make a simple text engraving in a specific dept 1.5mm with a endmill, and a advance carving at multiple high, ie in a W60xL60xH20 wooden block...

      Hope you have a great day!

      HE, iam sure thet not gonna do that :-) but i found they release TOOL file and a file for POST, i install it and it works, now i just have to find out of how much data is transfer to SM software, ie, speed, clearing high, amount of deep in each carve aso,, since the Snapmaker is a 3D-printer, carve,laser, NOT a mill,,, :-) but thx for you work, its great for os noobs.

    He Lars,
    I would like to engrave a brass plate.
    The problem is, the writing should be done on a circle.
    is this possible with fusion 360?

      You can do it easily in Inkscape (free). Create an SVG file and import to Fusion 360.

    Spent the past hour trying different ways and bits for small type and just nothing but vague errors. Fusion has a lot of options but far from user friendly.

  • @gheumann

    This is making me crazy. This is exactly what I want to learn to do, but you are a Spline God and I am not worthy. Your spline control handles just show up. If I create a spline, I can only add more points in sketch mode - so I "finish sketch" and then only the spline shows. I have to right click every point to "activate curvature handle" and "activate tangent handle". Your controls seem to be visible immediately. That's problem A. Is this some sort of preference setting?
    Then there's actually getting the spline to do what I want and even with plenty of experimentation I am failing miserably. Do you have a "drawing with splines" tutorial?

      Joel Roche I know this comment is old, but I’ll provide an answer anyways. Every time you use a sketch to extrude, fusion automatically hides the sketch. If you go to the drop down menus on the left and click the lightbulb (recently updated to an eye) next to the sketch you want to see, it will toggle between hidden/visible.

    IF YO WANT TO ENGRAVE .... BUY A ROUTER AND A DREMEL WORKSTATION. He is showing you howto drive from Florida through California from Ohio. Carving is becoming a lost art. I can charge 120X more for a carving than Fusion 360 will get you.
