This coach is doing what is right. my high school team won there district with scores like 56 -7 48 - 0 and all starters came out after the half and when it came playoff time we were not ready for a 4 quarter game.

The problem with today is our society is a bunch of pansies who are offended and butthurt by everything and use the tactics of bullying as an excuse!! Giving participation trophies is a joke and if you wanna beat the Bobcats of Refugio or keep the score close here's what you do!! Hit the weight room, watch game film and study there system both offense and defense, put some extra time in at practice and conditioning. If you work hard and don't turn the ball over and make plays you can compete against them
When we played Refugio in the area playoffs we held them to 21 points the score was 28 - 7 but their last touchdown came on a turnover deep in our own endzone with like 58 seconds left that year they averaged 49 pts a game in '08
You guys don't like him boy you would hate the legendary coach Lucky I played for Rockport Fulton High school Pirates and we played them preseason they beat us 14 to 8 but met them again in bidistrict they beat us again 14 to 12 they went on to win state championship 60 to nothing they have always been a great team and coaches, Rockport Fulton Pirate class of 1972-73.by the way the sports writers still ranked us Rockport Fulton the number 2 team in the State class 3A.
I didn't realize the game of football has a mercy rule? He coaches to win like every other great coach. What bothered me is the mentality of the Hebbronville coaches. A few years ago there was a different swagger about them, I know the coaches are different now. This isn't pee wee league football, this is readying kids for the next level if they so choose. Im from Woodsboro a smaller town outside of refugio and my dad is the definsive coordonater one of our best football players named Ronny lucich left refugio to play for us and herring started saying to ronny that he wouldnt get any scholarships but he already got soo many scholarships from playing in woodsboro. But herring told him to get more scholarships to come to refugio because this next year refugio moved up a classification. So yes its true most of the players from refugio are recruited from other schools

What has all others opponents worried is the fact that no stadium no matter what size has a scoreboard that can show three digits as a score. I believe this little rinky dink town with it's football team scoring 90 plus could be the first. We live in a society of participant awards and that just trying is fine. The man puts in back ups and still beats starters. I went to the state championship game last year that featured Refugio vs. Cisco. It was an evenly-matched game that Cisco had every chance to win. I had coaches like Herring in high school, and believe me, it doesn't make a "better" kid to be belittled and screamed at. And running up the score to prep your kids for the playoffs?? Those kind of coaches are reliving their childhood and are in it for themselves. Herring is definitely one of the more arrogant coaches I've ever seen.

There are very good reasons why coaches don't run up the scores. Cisco could do the exact same thing as Refugio, but instead has class and doesn't. We have already seen a major consequence of what Refugio has done already: By Monday, three days after it was confirmed that Cisco would play Refugio for the finals, every head coach of EVERY team that Refugio has played this year had sent the head coach at Cisco film of every game. Obviously, Refugio is not very well liked. It'll bite'em in the ass.
Maybe if they studied film themselves they wouldn't get blown out like that. Its not the offenses job to keep the scoring down, it is the defenses job. If you suck then that is no ones fault but yours.

You want to make those kids have some indurance? Fine, but have some more tact and make them do some of those 'death workouts' and they'll get the same endurance, without getting yourself put on everyone's blacklist.
Even if this kid wasnt "recruited", don you for one second think that Refugio hasnt done this before. In 1996 their starting offensive line averaged 6'6" and almost 300lbs. You tell me that a 2A high school is south Texas just HAPPENED to have guys that big without recruited.

ummmm FALSE... high schools don’t pick their conference/district affiliation. conferences/districts are determined by the state high school athletics associations (the governing body of all high school athletics) - teams are assigned to a particular conference/district based on location and student enrollment - you don’t want a 300 student high school competing in the same conference with a 3,000 student high school the state put refugio in a conference with other schools in the area who have similar student enrollment - and those fellow conference teams are your schedule, you don’t have the option to replace those games on your schedule

You look at the teams that's on the losing side and you see kids not playing with energy and not tackling so maybe they need new coaches to teach them better. I would rather lose big than have the other team take a knee every play.

I recall playing basketball with a bunch of girls and we were up against a team that were much bigger in height and had the speed. Our team were very small in height and did not have the speed. That team scored 88 to 3. Sure it was pretty embarrassing but we did not have a chance against that team only because they had the advantage.
They have always won in a storied history in South Texas . The object is to win by 1 or whatever . .What does anyone expect for them to lay low and the loser feel lower .

Cisco looked really good. Refugio never really got any offensive rhythm going like they normally do. Great season though. They have nothing to be ashamed of.
That Sonora team was mediocre at best. They had no running game, no speed, a stagnant passing game and were overmatched from the start. If anyone else should have made it it would have been Lexington, who was fresh off a state finals loss the year before and brought back the entire team.

You obviously don't know how the classifications work in highschool football. The coach doesn't decide what class they are in. Its determined by the UIL based on enrollments in the entire school. So the teams they play are close as far as size of school. You must of played or coach losing teams.

That was 1995 when we lost in the Semi's. The only lineman not from there was center Will McKinney whose dad was the DC. Outside of him that entire line was born and bred in Refugio. Schlaback, Elizalde, Sullivan, Moscorro, Firova. I should know, I grew up with all of them- and arguably our best team to not win it all.
Easy fix: Start using the 45 point rule, like they use in Six Man. If ahead by 45 points after halftime, the game is over. Gives the kids an incentive to play hard, so they can go party earlier, and stops the sportsmanship issue dead in its tracks. Its been used for decades in Six Man with no issues.
It sounds nice, but the whole point here is that while Refugio is trouncing its competition, it faces tougher competition in the playoffs, which means that they need their starting unit in the game longer. Unfortunately, when you have spent the whole season playing 2 quarters of ball, your player's conditioning will not be there for a full game. That is why they had been losing in the championship games. The other team had been playing 4 quarters and were physically able to go the distance, while Refugio players were used to playing half that per game.

The quarterback passed for almost 4,000 yards... Passing yard average of 260 yards per game and 150 rushing. We would have smacked lexington.

refugio is not a rich town and many of the kids do not even go to college. way to focus on sports not near enough on education

Cisco looked really good. Refugio never really got any offensive rhythm going like they normally do. Great season though. They have nothing to be ashamed of.
That Sonora team was mediocre at best. They had no running game, no speed, a stagnant passing game and were overmatched from the start. If anyone else should have made it it would have been Lexington, who was fresh off a state finals loss the year before and brought back the entire team.

You obviously don't know how the classifications work in highschool football. The coach doesn't decide what class they are in. Its determined by the UIL based on enrollments in the entire school. So the teams they play are close as far as size of school. You must of played or coach losing teams.
@Darkside2890 but thats gilmer. Gilmers coach always knew how to beat daingerfield but when daingerfield had all that talent, couldnt nobody in 2a touch them boys AND only SOME of the elite teams in 3a could such as a Gilmer, or a Carthage.

That was 1995 when we lost in the Semi's. The only lineman not from there was center Will McKinney whose dad was the DC. Outside of him that entire line was born and bred in Refugio. Schlaback, Elizalde, Sullivan, Moscorro, Firova. I should know, I grew up with all of them- and arguably our best team to not win it all.
Easy fix: Start using the 45 point rule, like they use in Six Man. If ahead by 45 points after halftime, the game is over. Gives the kids an incentive to play hard, so they can go party earlier, and stops the sportsmanship issue dead in its tracks. Its been used for decades in Six Man with no issues.
It sounds nice, but the whole point here is that while Refugio is trouncing its competition, it faces tougher competition in the playoffs, which means that they need their starting unit in the game longer. Unfortunately, when you have spent the whole season playing 2 quarters of ball, your player's conditioning will not be there for a full game. That is why they had been losing in the championship games. The other team had been playing 4 quarters and were physically able to go the distance, while Refugio players were used to playing half that per game.
