- In this 3 part series, dispatch riders working on the streets of London talk about their job and experiences with amusing anecdotes. Part 3 covers their fight with motorists, the dangers they face riding a bike on the busy streets and their future. Although filmed in the 1990’s, it seems not much has changed.

"You're constantly in contravention of the law averages" the quote that sums it all up.
I was a BBC Dispatch rider in 1969 on Triumph Tigers and Bonnevilles. The bikes had a white faring, big radio antenna and BBC stickers so the cops largely left us alone...this series brought back a lot of memories!
Ex DR here had to quit after being taken out by a truck on way back from manchester. Loved the job even when it was pissing down made some great mates still in touch with a few of them even though its been 20 years. that brought back some memories I wouldnt do it now ( well i couldnt my battered body couldnt handle it ) REspect to all DR's present past & future
Did it based in Brum from 84 to 86. Lots of long distance work and once or twice a week a run down to the Smoke, usually the papers on Fleet St. You London riders really were something else!
That was great seeing the old logos again - Certainly taught me (the hard way) how to ride in traffic
I was in that video, I was the scruffy one who used to be an Undertaker
@Harry Bell you are so right
@Harry Bell yea, bloody nightmare, I was a cycle courier for 18 years, its a wonder I survived
@Harry Bell I'm curious what years were you despatching, ( I, 1986 to 2004)

@Harry Bell Hanover sq of course, I used to plot up on the Broadgate steps in Appold st, by the flower stall, there'd be up to 20 of us, bikers and pushbikers, ( I had a sideline with the flower seller delivering flowers, ) you might or might not remember me, in between jobs I would stand there juggling five balls ( must have looked a right dick )
Best days of my life getting wet and cold for 15 long years. But that was in the early 80s. Wouldnt catch me going into London these days. At 17 years old where else could you earn £250 to £300 a week?.
What a great series, I did a bit a dispatching years ago.more of this please 👍
Great little documentary. It brought back a lot of memories for me. God only knows how any of us survived. Many thanks.
oh yes, I was there, so many true words. happy days.
I work as a DR for 10 years. 1990-2000. It’s takes its toll on you but it does have Its good times too. I recognise a few faces in this film. I worked with two of them too.
You don’t see that many now but back when this was filmed there was loads of us doing this work.
was a DR for 20 years loved & hated it thankls for the video brought back memorys
this is gold
remember the free mots.
Ahahaha .. Horses with hairdryers!
yup ! no mercy those boys.
Terrific upload.
enjoyed that , will be out there tomorrow morning
True what he said about law of averages, i used have at least one near death experience a week. I think what killed it was the change in the law regarding faxes and emails becoming legally binding or something. Work fell off a cliff, i went from earning £600-750 a week to £150. Shame cause it was a great job.
Great memories. Great vid. Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it
The Honda CX 500- R.I.P.
Plastic Maggots! I rode one occasionally, a great spatching bike.
The bike on the mall was a gpz 900r with a Harris single seat and Harris race pipe, all started when a police van saw I had and radio for dispatching whilst waiting at the traffic lights coming from trafalgar square, he rang a wind-up sieren and told me when the lights change pull over, I asked him.. What for? And just got a "you pull over for response. I knew at the time they where not letting bikes with publicity from dispatch firms on the mall, which I didn't have on anyway only the small radio on my shoulder. I thought this was going to be an unfair stop so when the lights changed I took off full wack round the birthday cake and up constitution hill, my number plate was a tiny one not very leagle too. Never did hear about again until I've seen this video. Old times now it's just an old memory.
Great story - thanks for sharing
Great films, cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it
where are you all now I would like to meet up with any challenger and west one riders. We were one of a kind....
i was a bit before that, inter-city and others
@Harry Bell I think I did 2 months with metro then went back to another one, but hey they were really fun days now you look back, and yes we were all mad to do it..!!!
Lets make a film a propper film like fast and furious but on bikes in the 80s
Check out our 'On Any Other Sunday' spoof film - might get a chuckle - next generation do thier thang.
