I have been meaning to send you a Thank You card for a while. Family is from my teen years and I was not always allowed to watch it or Soap. Thanks again!
HAHA, I was little in the 70s and I wasn't allowed to watch "Soap" either. Which of course, made me want to watch it even more! But "Family" was ok in my house.
@@stutteringjohnsunpaidgasbi7285 I was more interested in watching Mannix, Cannon, Barnaby Jones, and Hawaii Five-0, although this was a good show, too.
I couldn't either. However, there have been a couple of sitcoms that dealt with someone overdosing on pills. There was a two part episode of One Day At A Time called Barbara's Friend in the late 70s when a social misfit tries to befriend Barbara, but her antics only drive Barbara away. So, due to being depressed over feeling rejected, she takes almost a whole bottle of pills in an attempt to kill herself. Luckily, she pulled through at the end. But it has been done in sitcoms before.
I found it quite implausible that that manager, after Willie tells him Susie's "trying to kill herself," just forks over the keys, closes the door, and goes on with his evening.
I don't get it. There must be thousands of child actors in Hollywood, surely they could have found someone else to play the role of Annie given that Quinn Cummings had already been cast in the series in another role.
So I don't get it? Marcy was just a neighbor kid whose parents paid Buddy to walk her home from school 3 days a week? But then she was adopted by the Lawrences & became Annie?
@@sugarplumfairy420 I can guarantee you, there weren't many child actors like Quinn Cummings back then, today they're all over the place but. back then, she was pretety unique-she was so verbal & articulate. She was coming off the hit "The Goodbye Girl". I HIGHLY highly recommend the film if you haven't seen it. Especially in these covid days when we're still inside more (altho I think it's coming to an end soon! yippee!). It stars Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason-it's really cute, funny and sweet. Quinn is brilliant in it.
@@SlimKeith11 That movie is very annoying to say the least, very period piece of the 70’s. And she’s annoying. I could barely get thru it. She’s just as annoying as Annie in later episodes on this show! Although there were a couple episodes where I did feel sorry for her...

I'm completely addicted to the Family. I never got to watch it even though I lived only 20 minutes away from where it was filmed. (Sherman Oaks to Pasadena)
Low self esteem, no sense of self or value without outside validation. Fear of rejection/abandonment. Easy prey for a philandering husband. The storyline hints at early childhood trauma. Possible borderline personality disorder. They have a high rate of suicidal thinking. This episode is called Lifeline-referencing that national suicide prevention lifeline perhaps. She does a lot of typical behaviors of those contemplating suicide-“I’ll show ‘em,” giving away treasured items.
Is willy ever NOT eating ? 😃 Well, he does seem to be a healthy snacker though, but he always seems to have something in his hand going into his mouth. 🤗 He (Gary Frank) studied under the famous acting coach Lee Strasburg, so who knows,. Maybe this is part of a technique. 😎😅
Was there really such a shortage of child actors that they had to use the same child to play two different people? This is truly disappointing for a show as good as this one.
I am just guessing, but maybe they liked her so much they wanted to bring her back as a more permanent character. As in, they created the role of Annie with QC in mind.
I still wonder about that. Not with this show, but through the 90s, tv shows would bring on new characters with actors that played on the show before as someone else. I think the worst was on Matlock when Matlock defended a lady he had a crush on for murder, then maybe a year later that same actress was brought back permanently as his daughter. Creepy!
Little House on the Prairie did the same thing. The actor who player Albert had previously played a young Charles Ingalls in a flashback episode. I guess Michael Landon like the kid and bought him back as a regular character.
They most likely tried her out with the cast to see how she would work out as a regular part of the show. Good actresses like her can take on a variety of roles. Not disappointing. Smart thinking, as they already had ideas for her to be a regular.

Cracked up when Willie counted to 2 after his parents went out the door -- then immediately came back in! Mine used to do that too.
That is a trope used in some sitcoms. Although Family is not a sitcom, it could be counted as a comedy-drama.
