The only thing I don't like about the new aero - for things that were able to be changed - are the sidepods. They just seem like they are from a car a size smaller - probably due to the huge floor the DW12 has, plus the openings just seem massive. It still looks fantastic, and it's a huge improvement, but something about that area just seems like they juuuust missed it. Won't complain coming from where we are today though! I actually like the ramps, I think the link between the sidepod and the ramp is the best curve on the car.
Empty Box wasn't part of the purpose for the dw12 to find a way to keep cars from ramping like that Vegas race? This seems like a step back to make them look better
Chad - Sort of. But it wasn't Vegas that was the tipping point, it was just the nature of open wheel. (The cars and concepts were drawn way before Vegas - wheel interlocking has always been a huge issue in open wheel cars and where it stems from) Part of the what became known as the DW12 was to try and prevent wheel locking, which is why they had the kardashians, but also partly why the car has a full size floor that is as wide as the tires as well as partly why the front wing is full width. There are performance reasons of course, but all three were also safety improvements as all of them make them far less likely to interlock wheels. As it is on these cars now, you can't hit someone's rear wheel without destroying your front wing, pods or no pods, without it being a serious incident regardless. That's different than most open wheel cars where the tires still stick out wider than the wings. Why they are gone is simple : they didn't work, and were more of a liability than anything as it's one more thing to fall off of a car. If you go back to the 2013 St Pete race the pods had their first live test under yellow - Hildebrand still went right over the top of Power. Even at caution speeds they failed to do the job. The main reason we've seen fewer flips from contact than previous cars is the racing is now totally different, with cars more spread out as opposed to the previous generation cars which raced in packs. The only thing they've really done is cause more bodywork damage and get someone black flagged when one of them eventually gets knocked askew on contact that wouldn't have happened in the first place had they simply not been there.
Huge improvement compared to the Indycar of the last few years. I have to agree though, I'd find it better looking if the rear wing would be higher as well. Another thing I still don't like is that the sidepods are extended right towards the rear wheels. Nothing they could have done with the DW12 chassis though, so still better than nothing.
This car is sexy! Damn, it's really, really good! F1 is my racing delicacy, but I have to say, these IndyCar chassis are better looking. If F1 gets rid of the advertising barge board between the roll hoop and rear wing, that would help a lot.
Yeah, thanks. I've heard the name so many times, but forgot while posting. Oops! Edited to add: Early on in the 2017 season I remember hearing the US announcers stating the shark fins are banned for 2018. I hope that still holds true.
tscooter22 - Actually the shark fin looks fine on the current F1 cars. They don't look too out of place IMO. Its only on the LMP cars where the shark fin is effing ugly.
As a former owner/driver, I like the idea of not being easy to hit things. 1. It's expensive. Especially for the type of racing I was doing. 2. It hurts like hell. Not conducive to being able to go to work on Monday, to earn a good enough living to put food on the table, and have enough left over to fix the car.
How about modernizing the rims? And please give us a louder engine/exhaust note. The 2011 cars sounded better. Wish they could also trim off a couple inches of height on the rear wheel air deflection devices.
I assume you are talking about the crash attenuator he is showing @3:55? If so that is there to absorb the initial shock if a car should back into a wall. It reduces the G-Force impact on the driver and lessens the likelihood of spinal injuries like those suffered by Sam Schmidt and Buddy Lazier.
Wow! Really digging this new look. It's like a modern version of a mid-nineties Lola. This is what an Indy car should look like. I've been an Indy car fan for a long time and I'll have to admit I'll never get used to the looks of the current cars. Especially the Honda. It's absolutely the ugliest thing I've ever seen. The Chevy isn't quite as bad, but still ugly. The new cars are gorgeous!
The front nose is still way too long and looks completely out of proportion with the rest of the car. It just goes straight from the top of the monocoque, looking like an old 90s f1 car. I know the f1 thumb noses look crap but at least those cars are proportional, maybe the back of the car should be extended, perhaps the rear wing like he says.
Best looking single-seater in the world of motorsport right now I think :)
Great Analysis of the car. Cant wait to see the road course configuration.
God it looks sooo goooood! now lets bring back thoes 2.65l v8's, or at least let these motors rev a couple thousands higher
The new body kit looks great and very sleek. A bona fide IndyCar.
They couldn't do anything to the nose as that is the chassis/safety cell. To change that would mandate a whole new car.
What an absolutely beautiful race car. I really like this chassis.
Awesome looking car I can listen to Marshall Pruitt dissect a car all day
Thanks for the many new angels and great detail shots!

You just need a forward looking camera placed on the rear wing over the wheel!! Best view ever.
Awesome camera work. Well done

That's called the shark-fin.
Yeah, thanks. I've heard the name so many times, but forgot while posting. Oops! Edited to add: Early on in the 2017 season I remember hearing the US announcers stating the shark fins are banned for 2018. I hope that still holds true.

They are the most hideous part on both cars!

What we've all been waiting for.
It looks better than the previous cars but it's disappointing that there is only one chassis for all teams.
looks really awesome! and it's so hard to imagine that such a small box of carbon fiber can withstand those high speed impacts :O
Awesome video. Thanks.
Great video, thanks for sharing!
look great
I DO LOVE IT
Thank you for sharing! :D
"LAWDAMERCY!!!"- Shabba Ranks.
I love it
La indycar no se ve nada mal he se ve bonito el azul que le pusieron me encanta ustedes ban atraer el carro en Puerto Rico
a step in the right direction
Look better than formula one car, simple but look luxurious

YES!!!!
Looks, looks, looks. What about function?
It just looks right.
What is the section that protrudes under the wing mount?

ALL OF THE LIKES!!!
Do I see an area designated for the electronic position numbers on the roll over bar?
Of course, those will still be there.
On the roll hoop.
Gus Jay I could do without
Se tirassem a parafernália da Roda Traseria ficaria mais bonito ainda...
Mesmo assim está muito nonito

better looking car than whats out there now.. But, they look too much like an Indy-lights car.
This car looks too sexy!!
Very sexy racing car
I think the rear wing needs to be flatter instead of having those angled edges but I'm no engineer
Indycar Beautiful car 2018. F1 ugly car 2018 with the HALO. FIA needs see it's car.
Don't be too happy. IndyCar wants to have its own Halo.
It doesn't want the halo because it doesn't work on ovals. They are working on a screen.
I Know, the indycar want put a security system like the shield, that was used by Vettel in Ferrari.
Halo or screen does not matter: it's hideous, it's horrible and this is not classic open wheel.
I agree.
haha no Kardashians, no big ugly things.

shit front wings. Can't get over how bad they look
I could care less what it looks like. If it doesn't put on a good race f*k it.
