    Recently bought a made in china strat knock off just for a cheap source of parts for my cigar box guitar. The wiring on that thing was so messed up that only the neck pick up was working kinda, I had to start from scratch. I followed this wiring and everything worked like it should, in fact it sounded pretty good for what it is. I looked at several videos but this one was by far the easiest to follow and understand.

    First I thought that it is a bit of an overkill to bridge two lugs of the switch with a yellow wire and give it a shrinktube, but then I noticed that its a great instalation for rediciding later for the other variant without burning your fingers ! Well done !

    Nice work! Only one comment: you should either insulate the capacitor lead that is connected to the live terminal of the pot, or change the placement with shortened leads. The way you wired and bent it (at 8:12 of the video), that lead can contact the pot case, which can cause a short to the ground. It looked like you actually shorted it (or came very close) in the video.

    This mod works and only needs two changes from standard wiring. Very easy to do and only took 10 mins. This gives you ........ BRIDGE - T1 BRIDGE & MIDDLE - T1 MIDDLE - no tone control MIDDLE & NECK - T2 NECK - T2.

    I would probably put heat shrink tubing on the capacitor wire as well so it can't touch the potentiometer ground. It can cause mischief.

    the black and white wires from the volume pot go to the output jack and the second black wire goes to the ground point on the term claw or body ground screw.

      Hi wife the ground are the long black wires coming from the back of the pots, 1 goes to the jack ground lug and 1 goes to the Tremolo claw.

      +wifey hi
      it just takes all the left over crap that acumilates from the circuit and dumps it hamlets lyrics into a part of the harness or hardware that terminates it so it cannot cause hum and crackle. I'm sure there us a more scientific way if saying it but that's the short and curlers of it.

    Error! The grounding wires should come from one point, even at the connection of the shielding of the strings and the bridge. All GND wires should come from the volume potentiometer. Otherwise, it can cause problems with hum. It is also a good idea to run a shielded audio cable from the volume potentiometer to the Jack output connector.

    Good video very simple to follow. Are you aware that each pot is grounded via the scratch plate? Therefore,you don't need to run grounds to each pot. Less work and it makes it a cleaner look! Still good job thanks for your time.

    • @innocentoctave
      @innocentoctave 7 років тому +2

      I think it's unwise to rely solely on the scratchplate to ground the pots. I've checked continuity across that foil from various places and found it intermittent. It only takes one pot to be ungrounded and you have problems.
      Also: relying purely on the foil, it can be difficult to see where the problem is, or to correct it without adding a separate ground lead. So why not just do it from the start?

    • @Scorhos
      @Scorhos Рік тому

      The pickup entrances are the 1 to 3. In the 1 you put the bridge , in 2 the middle and in 3 the neck. The jack ones should are the ones with the isolator.

  • @ivandrimal5783
    @ivandrimal5783 Рік тому

    If you don't heat up the solder with the ground well, a cold junction will form and it will randomly cause mischief. For the ground wire at the springs, you need a slightly better soldering iron (150-200W) and not just 40-60W. Or does he want to remove the spring holder and only then solder the wire.

    • @Scorhos
      @Scorhos Рік тому

      Why is needed such powerful iron solder? I saw a other luthier just sanding the claw with a lime to dust the chrome.

    • @danieldoenut
      @danieldoenut 9 років тому +5

      you solder the hot leads to the corresponding lugs on the switch, and you solder the ground wires to the back of the volume pot.

    My neck pickup tone is not working, and middle and neck position is out of phase (very quiet) how can I fix this.
    Update: also it seems to be ok when the pick guard is not screwed onto the guitar, maybe one of the wires or something is touching the inside ground cavity? I have a Squier classic vibe and the fender 5 way I put in it is a little too close to the side of the cavity and maybe it's touching it. Also since the only new pickup is in the neck and it's a Texas special, the other two are stock, so maybe if I replaced the middle with a Texas special, that out of phase problem would go away?

    I see that this config uses only one cap
    Is that why the yellow wire jumps one pot
    end to end instead of across like the green
    in the website diagram?
    Which setup gives the widest tone on all pups?

    • @Mathias9n
      @Mathias9n 7 років тому

      @wifey
      In the configuration of the video, it uses 1 tone for the neck 1 for the bridge, or 1 for neck and middle and 1 for bridge, or just 1 master tone ??
      I want the second tone to be controling the bridge pickup (example 2)

      This .22 thing is responsible for a mod called treble bleed. Is soldered in the volume to cancel the lose of treble that happens when we low the volume. Is optional. But is a lovely thing to add in a strat.

    Cliffs of Dover was played on a Gibson ES-335. Your strat is not going to sound like it no matter how you wire it.

    • @coandc
      @coandc 9 років тому

      First if all, asinine comment. Secondly totally wrong Eric Johnson often played a strat for cliffs of Dover live.

    • @vcc1965
      @vcc1965 9 років тому +2

      david coan Mark is right on the ES-335 thing. Eric says so himself in an interview. I know for you hardcore Fender guys that might seems like sacrilege. As far as the Strat not sounding like the 335, that can be done by the great players with the right guitar who are capable of being able to use different instruments and you wont be able to tell which one they are playing. Jeff Beck is one of them. He can play a Les paul and it would hard to tell if he was playing a strat or not. I believe on his blow by blow recording he is primarily using a les paul. I understand some people are going to prefer one over the other due to feel and tone etc. But I think anyone limiting themselves to being Gibson only or Fender only players are making a big mistake. Both are great choices. I own both and a ton of famous players play and record on both as well.

    • @coandc
      @coandc 9 років тому

      vcc1965
      That's not the point, the OP said that he never used a Fender which is just not true. If you search "Cliffs of Dover" on UA-cam the first live performance of Eric Johnson he's playing on a Fender.

    • @vcc1965
      @vcc1965 9 років тому +1

      david coan I guess i must be missing something, I didnt see where his post said that he never used a fender. Just that the original recording was on a 335.

    Not a great lesson in how to solder. Most important is to "Tin the iron" eg. add a small amount of solder to the iron before even attempting to solder as to make a good heat transfer, and keep the wires/items from over-heating. Damage can result making an expensive repair.
