Can you do some videos where you compare 250k and 500k volume and tone pots for single coil Strats?

Hi Dylan, Thanks once again for this very clear description of how to hook up the components for an SSH Strat pickguard. FYI, the copper shielding tape with conductive adhesive - the big roll of 2 inch wide stuff - is still the best deal going. There is one other brand that sells the same-size roll of copper tape, also with conductive adhesive. I think the difference in price is about 49 cents , so if one is out of stock, there's an alternative.
A tip for people who live where it's cold during the winter. As the temperature drops, the air gets very dry, because cold air doesn't hold moisture. If you leave the tape sitting loose by your workbench, the adhesive will dry out fairly quick. Keeping the roll in a zip-closing freezer bag prevents that, and it's easy to do to prevent the hassle of finding your copper tape has no "stickum" left.
Two other points I noticed while looking at the listings. Point #1 is that a roll of this stuff that's the same length but narrower, cost a lot more, and the thickness of the copper foil is/was often less (that makes it fragile & easy to damage). Just something to be aware of - the wider tape is a much better deal all around.
The other is that there's an overseas brand - the company name's "characters" translate to something like "dead flowers." Their listing shows a picture that looks just like the big roll you recommend. But going in and reading their actual specs, buried in the listing, their tape is only a 6 ft. roll, about 1/10th the length of your favorite brand. Showing that picture in the listing is a bit of a con, because a 6 foot length doesn't look anything like the Amazon "best bargain" roll of copper tape with conductive adhesive.
Anyhow, thanks again for these pointers on setting up the SSH Strat. I hadn't done one for a while, and it was a big help

My experience is that shielding works really, really well as long as it is done properly so that it actually works and has continuity all over. But you also have to shield the internal cavity as well.

Hi Dylan, another great video, for anybody in the UK, i used Wilson & Gregory slug barrier tape from the Poundland shop on 2 Stat guitar scratch plates and also inside the cavity, it works a treat, no unwanted noise cheap but not nasty. 2mtr x 25mm for £1, a bargain, easy to use and it works.

I've watched many hours of your videos. Very informative always down to earth. I've come over here from an older film about 'matching pots' and some of the talk was about tolerances and how much was acceptable. I bought 3 500k push/push pots from Allparts and they vary quite widely from 457 to 480 and 560.

My SSH pickups are stock but got I got em A500k volume, 47caps and A500k noload tone. At clean, I always start at 3 on tone then I love how the single neck PU and bucker screams when tone is dialled full at no load. Lots of tonal possibilities. 👌👌 Thanks to Dylan.

I had a Fender Lone Star Strat which came with their 5-way Super Switch. This switch allowed for the bridge humbucker to automatically split in position 2. I took it a step further by replacing the 3rd position with the neck + split bridge humbucker instead of just the middle pickup by itself. Also; both of the split coil combos were humbucking and ironically quieter the humbucker itself (Pearly Gates Plus) which used mismatched coils.

I've got a CV strat and the bottom tone control was tied into both the middle and bridge, and the upper tone control was connected to the neck. (I've since built a new pickup with push/pull pots and hot rails and used quick connects so I can easily swap pickguards). I shielded it all, including the jack cavity because why not? I Initially ran into a short, then discovered that Fender wires the ground to pin, and hot to ring, and that is the cause of shorts when shielding the jack cavity so if you run into that, just reverse the phase on the jack leads and it will be fine. I wouldn't have bothered shielding the jack cavity if I didn't already have the jack out to replace it with a true tone jack (preventive to avoid future scratchiness due to wear). I upgraded to 500K pots so I can further cut out the caps for more highs to offset some of the loss of highs from the humbucker setup.

I just finished an HSS that has separate volume pots for bridge and single coils so I can have a 500K for the humbucker and a 250k for the singles. It also allows me to split the coil at the volume pot and I used a push/pull tone pot, using a .015 Soviet PIO as the down/default and a .047 orange drop as the pulled up cap. I also used treble bleeds because I'm addicted to them... lol. I can basically get any sound I want and always have balanced pickups that way. Just keep the switch sides separate and bridge pins 2/3 so the 2nd volume gets both singles. Solder the humbucker directly to the volume 1 and then send it to the switch. Then you can use the last common output pin for master tone/output.

    Great video.
I have a mid-80s Kramer Focus 3000 in HSS arrangement and wanted to do this exact mod, so I’m glad I found this.
I also want to add the Gilmour mod in place of the current coil splitter so I can run the neck pickup in conjunction with B and B+M positions. The tone pot for the N/M will also be push/pull and will either switch between series and parallel on the neck pickup, or change its phase. I haven’t quite decided which tones I find more useful.
I think that will give me the tones I want without cluttering up the guitar with repeat tones or tones I’d never use, like some of these 85-in-1 arrangements I’ve found.
I’d spend more time searching for the “preset” than playing, lol.

The copper tape is to wrap around fruit trees or pots to keeps slugs at bay . The copper reacts with the slime they rely on . I use gold foil from chocolate bars the stuff with paper on one side . Just paint the paper side with PVA and slap it on . Just fold a piece to connect the sheet if you need to but most big bars unfold to cover a pickguard in in one go .

You can also add a 500k resistor in parallel with a switch to make a 500K pot a 250K pot, if you don't mind only going down to half volume add a 250K resistor in series to the GND of a 250K pot with a bipass switch... however doing that will mean you can't go below half volume with the knob fully down.

I use the exact tape.. But also nickel paint. So far no issues with the paint but I'll have to keep my eyes on it.. I use them together often
Mainly just to have better coverage...
But I only use humbuckers now so it's all redundant. Except I guess the cavity area.... Where the paint comes in is the drilled sections between cavities. I pour it through.
I only use 500k pots as I like extremely bright tones..
I also wouldn't do a HSS maybe a HS and treat it like a SSS with a series switch for bridge like a PRS
You don't need or want a tone on bridge anyhow. Humbuckers are often dark.

My top tip for a better strat. Buy one from someone other than Fender.
You can buy a hand crafted instrument made to your specifications from the best materials for less if you do so. You will have an instrument that will last longer than you. It will be set up to your specs and e perfect from the day you collect it. It will be more reliable and never need modifications as it was everything you wanted.
It really couldn't be simpler than that.

I'm confused, why are you reversing the caps? .022uf is usually used on humbucker and .047uf on single.
Going for a darker or brighter tone?
Also adding a 500k resistor parallel from the switch to ground where the single connects to the selector makes the singles see 250k, I noticed a change in tone, but not as good as using a 250k, so I'd actually put a 250k resistor in series with the humbucker so it sees 500k.

Question, I’m sure you can answer. A coil tap and a coil split are two different things and should give two different tones. Could a pickup be wired with both and switched differently???? Is this possible???? Any way please stay safe.

    • @kirkwilson6229
      @kirkwilson6229 3 роки тому

I'm pretty sure a coil tap wil only tap down to a split. You are basically putting one of the coils on a dimmer. At the very end of the tap rolloff, you are left with one coil live, which is sonically and literally the same thing as a split. There isn't any reason to wire for both, as far as I know.

    • @valueofnothing2487
      @valueofnothing2487 3 роки тому

A coil split is usually when you split a humbucker. A humbucker is two coils with one reverse wound. You take one of the halves and you get a single coil.
A coil tap is when you tap into a any coil to get less windings. So instead of 8k you can get 7 or 6.
I think making a tap - so long as you didn't go too low - would just be a separate switch and wouldn't change much else.

      Rafael,
In my Gibson Les Paul with P90s, I did 500k CTS pots, with .033 Russian paper-in-oil caps, and added treble bleeds. 680pf cap & 100k resistor on the bridge, 500pf cap & 150k resistor on the neck. All of this was done with the "50's wiring" schematic.

Try HSS with a single tone and single volume, 2 knobs. The volume can be moved further from the high E string so your hand doesn't hit it, or your trem arm on dive-bombs. I did it, SO MUCH BETTER!!

I was going to add a concentric 250K/500K pot so I could control the volume of the single coils with the 250K and the humbucker with the 500K. Then I was going to have one 250K pot for the single coils tone control and one 500K for the humbucker tone control. Am I wasting my time using the concentric pot for volume instead of just using a single 500K to control the volume for all pickups?

I actually have an old pro tone with single coils that originally come with 500k pots, and with that tone controls I feel there’s way more control. But what you just did, did you only use 500k for the tone control on the bridge? Or are they all 500k and just compensate with the caps?

i just got done adding a humbucker sh4 in my strat, new pickguard, with ssl1 and fender squier mid pickup, reverse the wires on the seymour duncans so they work in phase with the mid pickup, i also added a new fender 5 way switch and wired everything through that, instead of my old import switch which was faulty, and after installing it, everything works, but the switch jams in position 5 to 4, like gets a little stuck inbetween 4 and 5 and position 5 seems to be working as Neck and middle, the same as position 4 instead of being Neck only, im wondering if it could be cause by the pickups switch being stuck there, as if maybe some solder got inside thats making position 5 act like its position 4 or something, ive been trying to find solution online, reddit discord and other forums, but no one is answering, and no other person has ever posted anything with a problem similar to mine

I Iike to buy 1k pots for both volume and tone and then decrease their resistance to the needs of my pickups by adding resistors in parallel. In that way I can very easily adapt the pots using resistors which are dirt cheap

Quick question, I currently have a humbucker guitar with 250k pots that’s too muddy, but the split coil tones sound phenomenal. I’m going to swap them out for 500k but I’m worried I’ll make the split coil thin sounding. What would you do?
I’ve just ordered some dual gang 250k/500k volume pots and am hoping my luthier can install them

    • @McSlobo

500k pot contains values 0 - 500k, 250k pot contains values 0 - 250k. The 500k pot hence contains the whole range of 0 - 250k too which means you can achieve exactly the same tone with it. If the 500k pot sounds too thin you just roll the pot down to a smaller value, e.g. 250k. It's just a resistor which changes in value. You just have to be more careful adjusting the 500k because the values change more per same amount of rotation. Rarely guitar pots are linear though so I doubt this is an issue (so the 250k value in 500k pot might be something like 7 or 8). You can also turn your 500k pot to a 250k pot simply by just installing a 500k (constant value) resistor parallel with the pot. It will turn the pot from 0 - 500k to 0 - 250k. If you use a 1M resistor parallel with the 500k pot you'll make the pot effectively a 333k pot. Recommend you some resistor calculation (series, parallel) tutorial. Remember the pot is just a variable value resistor (from 0 to its nominal value, e.g. 250000 or 500000).

@@McSlobo for a tone pot yes, but on a volume pot it acts as a voltage divider, so if you have a 250k pot which has less resistance, more highs will bleed to ground, even with the volume on 10. Rolling the 500k pot down will just make the signal quieter
I’ve seen some guitar companies (I think suhr) connect a resistor in series with the hot wire of the single coils and the volume pot on HSS guitars to balance the single coils as well
