The meltdown is not because he believes in flying donkeys - the flying donkey is not the cornerstone of Islam.
The meltdown is because he has finally realized that the strongest argument for modern Islam (i.e. the preserved Quran) is not so strong afterall. My guess is that previously he attributed every discrepancy to ahruf/qirat and just dismissed challenges to the preservation of the Quran - until - an Islamic scholar (Yasir Qadhi) dismissed his certainty in the Quran in front of his own audience. :)

btw, critique from the outside is quiet different from critique from within. Its one thing for Christians and atheists to criticize Islam - to show its flaws --- but quiet another for ex-Muslims (those who have seen the "beauty" of Islam), and those still within Islam (like Qadhi) to do so. The latter hasnt happened to Islam on a large scale before (due to their blasphemy laws), and so they dont know how to deal with it now. Also, exMuslims have a medium to popularize their dissent - that is unprecedented in Islam.

If our species was predominantly rational, and not predominantly emotional - the death of Islam (which stands on such flimsy grounds) would be more or less certain - but given how horrible the state of affairs is in the West (the by product of Enlightenment), where this ideology is defended by those of atheistic inclinations*** - I dont see Islam or any of the various ideologies defeated in our lifetimes. Our species just doesnt think clearly most of the time.
Maybe this is just unchecked pessimism on my part - but the reality of what I see around myself (the abundance and proliferation of stupidity across many ideologies, religious or otherwise) kinda makes me very skeptical of the promised land shown to us by critics of Islam like Wood or the exMuslims and/or the New Atheists. But, yes, this does mean the beginning of toning down of at least some forms of (dangerous) stupidity in Islam. That will still be good news. I think getting rid of Shariah will solve most of our problems with Islam - as a community of disbelievers.
.*** My point here is that I can expect religious people who rest so much on faith or the unseen or the like - to not be critical most of the time - but to even see atheists (of the far left disposition to be sure) being as irrational is discouraging. The biggest impediment to the efforts of exMuslims is not coming from other non-Islamic religions, but from far left atheists themselves. Ah, our species is doomed. lol
In other words, if we can get a separation of Church and State in Islam - that would be victory for us. And I think that is a more pragmatic goal to have. Anything more would be too ambitious a project. And I am not sure we can get there. Not in our lifetime.
Never got the 'preservation' argument - even if true, what would be special about burning all the source material, arbitrarily determining a single text then ensuring the perpetuation of that version through threat of death? It wouldn't strike me as terribly impressive under those circumstances and the end result is still perfectly preserved stories of nonsense.

His crisis of faith began when Yasir Qadhi told him in a video interview that "there are holes in the (perfect preservation of the Quran) narrative". Qadhi told him "we shouldn't talk about this" in public. He couldn't handle the truth. To make matters worse, many Muslims have told him that his own video with Qadhi shook their faith. It has been all downhill from there.
Hijab is finished, because he is not only is exposed as an imposter, but he exposed his prophet Mohamed as the father of all imposters.
He is losing the argument, and he's gradually realising it. Under the weight of academic scrutiny, Islam does not hold up well.

The preservation of the Bible is amazing as there is a 95% match between the OT and the Dead Sea scrolls. The New Testament was distributed among many churches spread throughout the world and no one person had control of the entire Bible unlike Islam where Uthman ibn 'Affan burnt other versions of the Quran. That version that was chosen is now used. None could prevent the Bible from spreading as the Catholic Church nor any kingdoms tried to burn copies but the printing press saved it and the discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls were an amazing testament.
Sadly, most Muslims have no clue how textual criticism works and how textual scholars can re-construct ancient sources like the Gospels. And as you say, no clue about how the texts spread and what that means. Most think that Constantine decided on the Bible!
They are also only familiar with the Uthman story (and the silly idea that the Quran says that the Gospels are corrupted - while they haven't even read what their own scholars in the tafsirs say on the matter!). They never learn about the other stories that talk of missing verses, variants, disagreements, etc, and once they do, they claim they are not authentic.

The contradictions are irrelevant, because The Bible is a a collection of books written across a long period by people that lived under different kingdoms, life circumstances and eras. The coming of Messiah, the salvation he offers nd the result of that is told again and again. If there are differences in the number of sheep or bread or whatever is irrelevant lol.
