Caenorhabditis [see no rab dye tiss ] elegans, or C. elegans for short, is a small transparent worm used in decades of biological research. With a streamlined nervous system and small but complex repertoire of behaviors, it is an excellent subject for many basic questions in this biology. While in the wild these animals eat bacteria found in decaying vegetation, in the laboratory they are a fed a simple diet of OP50 strain E. coli. In this video, members of the Chalasani lab at Salk demonstrate how bacterial food plates for C. elegans are prepared and how the animals explore these environments.
