I’m glad you went over the basics. People think it’s stupid but it’s very useful and important.
Haha I hope they don’t think it’s stupid. This is absolutely the most important part of Freestyle :)
Mike Osterman as long as your here...how many “standard” tricks do you usually do? I feel like your Waltz brand boards are a good inbetween for freestyle and average skateboarding. Obviously not to ALWAYS do skate park tricks on it but I feel like it’s a good inbetween design.
Also, for a video talking about how “freestylers don’t do ‘real’ tricks” you should do you doing some standard tricks just as a laugh
Faith Lewis it’s always someone new to skating and I think a lot of people who get good at skating forget that which is why most people call it stupid. But 100% agree even if I know how to do it I like seeing the basics.
Awesome video.
He's the best
#1: tictac, "oh okay! As a pure beginner I can handle this!"
#2: monster walk, "HOLY HANNAH, I'M GOING TO DIE."
😂 you can do this! It’s all about baby steps. Your first monster walk can be a bit more like a penguin walk, ie. Short choppy pivots first off of the tail, then off of the nose. Learning these first will help BIG TIME when you get to bigger tricks
Dog walk
Monster walk is the first thing 8 ever learned on a skateboard and I got it down literally first try
This is like, the 10th time I’m watching this video.
I’ve been skating just about every day and sometimes I don’t want to try tricks like kickflips or things like that because my body just doesn’t feel like it. So I try some of these exercises instead.
I kinda like how it is a lot more difficult than it looks. It’s a different challenge.
Free style can also help strengthen those smaller muscles in your feet/legs and make your skating better over all!
Faith Lewis, It's kind of like Kung Fu. The skills that those Tibetan Monks practice is unreal.
Im closer to kickflips than moonwalks lol. People think its easy cause no ollie but it seems harder.
Yooooo that backwards monster walk was so sick. I definitely have to work on some footwork once I have a day off where it doesn't rain. Great video Mike, thanks for making the end of my shift waaaaayyyy less boring.
Part of the force that allows tic tacs to propel the board is lateral (sideways) forces while the wheels are turned outwards, somewhat similar to roller or ice skating (you push your feet outwards with the skates angled a bit outwards to propel forwards), so it's actually a combination of twisting and leaning. You can see the leaning in addition to twisting starting at 3:56 into the video. With sufficient speed, a skateboard can just be carved side to side to propel it, with upper body motion similar to tic tacs, without lifting the front wheels.
If doing a series of small kick turns all in the same direction, all backside or all frontside, while moving in a circular path, you can steer and push the front wheels outwards just before doing a kick turn to propel the board a bit more.
I'm an old guy (69 years old), just started skateboarding again (over 20 years since I last rode a skateboard for more than just a few minutes). Doing tic tacs again to propel the skateboard only took a few minutes to get used to, since it's how I almost always propelled the skateboard (I rarely pushed). Endovers and monster walks will be next, currently I'm just doing one 180 degree move at a time, waiting to make sure I end up stable, then doing the next 180. Sustained wheelies and 360's will probably be the most difficult tricks I plan to learn.
I can do all of this tricks, but I never realised it can look so good when it's well executed !
I really should grab a freestyle skateboard, I love it so much !
Unsung tricks I love footwork I think it's a lost art. Thanks magic man
Im 38 and just got back into skateboarding 3 days ago. Andy Anderson is one of the reasons I went back down the skateboard rabbit hole. I appreciate your freestyle videos, very helpful, thank you.
Im so psyched to be back into skateboarding and since i am building my skills back up from the most basic things, this is the best time to start learning freestyle skating like ive always wanted to. Thanks so much for these videos man theyre great instruction for me! Much love!
I could try these even if I'm a bit injured...freestyle tricks will help keep me skating. Good stuff.
Thanks so much for this Mike. Freestyle has always been like a land of mystery for me, so this is just the thing I needed to start exploring it.
Really great video Mike! Your productions have gotten really good!
Awesome! Thank you. Skating for 42 never focused as much as I wish I would’ve on freestyle.
Starting now😁🤙🏼
Switchfoot was sick
I knew there was more before a primo stall, thank you kind stranger 💪🏿💯
Happy to help, sir
I don't skate anymore but your vids entertain me lmao
Love you videos, Mike! Thank you for sharing your little bits of skateboarding wisdom with us!! 🙏🏽. Hope that I get to meet you in person some day.
I just started skating last summer, the weather finally started clearing up to where I can get outside again this year. These look fun to practice and helpful. Love your vids!
Awesome video Mike. Always been a fan of your clean Monster Walks, but theyre something i do just here and there during my routines to get some speed from standing, so mine are obviously not as clean as yours. Personally i find them a little bit easier backwards though. Keep this videos coming. Could you maybe talk about Walk the Cows in the future? I cant really figure out how to get my Board around with just one foot
Is jaywalking gonna be in part 2?
+customvrocker yes
I did not realize that I was already practicing freestyle by doing tic tacs and penguin walks, just thought that I was goofing around.
Stay safe everyone!
Love this video! I’ve been trying some freestyle tricks and they don’t feel fluid so I think practicing all of this will really help!
I love your trick tipsss
+Galileo Sanchez thank youuuu!
This was awesome! Looking forward to more parts.
Love the vid Mike! Keep them coming please 🙏😊
Killer tips, thanks!
7:53 not mad... Double down, dude, and make more vids about basics. I spent 4 hours trying to land a pogo to railstand first time yesterday (many fails, much pain and twisted toes), yet still a monster walk looks awesome and its apparently just consecutive steezy 180s... Niccce
going from tic-tac to monster walk is quite a step tho, I tic-tac very smoothly and comfortably and I'm able to get quite a lot of speed doing it, have no problem going from fakey to regular even when going fast, but going from regular to fakey in the same way I find much harder to do.
Gotta work through that! It’ll unlock so much board control
That feeling when you’re 2 years in and still working on the “absolute basics”
I'm 1 week in. Learning these are cool
We all need to be grateful to have this kind of awesome content available on youtube, thank you so much Mike! You are the man!
I love how the ocean waves in the background match your eyes
just getting back into skateboarding and i've got big old school wheels on so my deck looks like a monster truck does wheel size matter?
Thank you for the advice and greetings from Medellín Colombia. If you ever want to skate here. Write to me and I will help you as a guide. In the meantime, I will put these tips into practice
THX bro this video was the holy grail for me . after the vid .. first try.. and god dammit all of this footwork feels totaly stabil .. incredible dope =)
greetings from Germany !!!!!
by the way .. I bought your "The Fuel" deck (why is the EU version without an white top on the backside ? ) and its very smooth to ride .. good work !!
ive always been a street skater and once considered these "loser tricks" or whatever, but they look fun and great to pop in a line. not to mention that it can only improve board control. thanks!
For goodness sake, take the subtitle away. It"s blocking all your footwork shown in the video.
Hi Khai, sorry for the poorly planned framing. Subtitles can be toggled on and off if you’d rather not see them. For future videos I’ll plan framing in order to avoid this
Hey mate nice videos i just found you tonight, subbed. I'm just getting back into skating since finding some Rodney Mullen doco on youtube and then going through a heap of old videos the passion is alive again! and I've just had a thought. You should totally send one of your boards to Rodney. I'm sure he would love to try it out! xD (if you haven't already). I want to get one of your boards myself and get into a bit more of the freestyle side of skateboarding. Do you ship to Australia yet?
+biggav88 hey man, that’s a great idea. We do ship to Australia! Both from our site and via The Shredquarters. Stoked that you found the community!
Awesome trick tips! Extremely helpful! Please keep 'em coming ⚡💨🔥👾👽🍭
but is there a part 2 ? 🤔
lol don't worry, none of these look easy
That’s what make’s em so fun! You should totally give them a try
Why isn't freestyle taught as the foundation of street skating?
I mean, it just seems like all these basics train balance, coordination, board control, ...
Even if one isn't looking to do "freestyle" in the formal sense, just being able to do these things would greatly improve one's skateboarding, or so it seems from my noobish perspective.
Look at Rodney Mullen, taking his freestyle to the street. He's doing pretty good for himself, you know, inventing trick boarding as we know it.
But what's the Name of this crazy manual moonwalk front to back thing all freesytlyers do? You made a Video about? I don't even know the Name :/
hahaha switchfoot! (the band) (sexy memories) anyway, keep on spraying us with your wisdom!
I want to try some tricks from every style of skateboarding and I’m going to use your channel :)
Would I use same weight transfer to power slide as monster walk? I’m having trouble getting wheels to slide on power slide and wondering if this would be easier to try first?
thanks for sharing. looks like your skating LBC that's whats up! peace from oc
So question that i was wondering do you think it’s necessary to get a freestyle board or is it okay to freestyle with a regular modern board seems like it would be easier with such a smaller board but I don’t necessarily want easier i just think freestyles dope and I wanna start learning but I don’t want to make it harder for myself off the bat
Hey Mike could you please share the name of the song and artist at 0:18 ? I was jamming out really hard but Shazam can't find it for me :( thanks.
is there any way to do like consecutive spins? like 3-4 revolutions without stopping
And now you can dance.
Can someone please tell me the name of the song that’s playing at the 0:18 mark?
freestyle tricks are awesome
yeheeyy i found this tricks tutorial i like this so much
tic tac
monster walk
8:18 tail stop switchfoot
Being a full time skateboarder is so hard
No mike, I want EASY not harder! :D
Mike! I think you just became my favorite skateboarder! Congrats 🎉
Thank you Amir!
Your are great at this. Subscribed
Audio 1:36 ???
Hi, when it comes to freestyle skateboarding, is it better with tight trucks?
+Raymond Yeung yes!
thanks from Vietnam
Does this all apply to single kick boards too?
Yep! I do these basically the same whether I’m on a single kick or double kick
Whens pt.2 gonna drop?
Yo Switchfoot still rocks. they are still going strong and it feels like Jon Foreman puts out 3 solo projects in-between each Switchfoot release.
I'm just getting comfortable with reverts and monster walks and right now it's one of my favorite "tricks" to do. I can practice them for hours and still be having fun.
Hi Mike. Do you find the 99a wheels better for footwork? Sometimes my 97a get too grippy. Great video.
Put legend please
Is it more ideal to use harder wheels for these?
I like mid-duro wheels. I’m on the 97a waltz freestyle wheels right now
@@mike_osterman1awesome thanks!
What does your playlist look like?
I don’t think I ever seen anyone explain something as simple as the tic tac so well lol it’s true tho all this basic stuff is important, you have to start somewhere. This is where I’m starting 💯🤘
lol I like your "y'all at home" commentary. I'm all about foundations tho, preciate it!
The real question is can I use a 360 pivot in a game of skate
I am going to purchase the 7.75 deck in the next coming week. And I would like a recommendation for trucks and wheels to go with it, like what size trucks and wheels so it will be flush with the rail? Any suggestions?
+Jersey Devil 😮 that’ll be rad! Email me and we’ll talk. MikeOsterBiz@gmail.com
@@mike_osterman1 I would like to know the answer to that question as well. Are freestyle trucks the same as street ones? Would my Indy 139s work for a 7.75" freestyle set up? I know the wheels are slightly different than street ones.
@@KeithSkates trucks are the same but freestyle trucks tend to be smaller
Honestly these are great tricks to work on during bad weather. I’ve been monster walking into a shuv it all morning in the back room lll
Would've been a nice 6 minutes video if you'd stuck to boarding and not trying to be an actor.. but thank you
Why do I end up going backwards when I try tictacs?
heard that song on google ply radio recognized it immediately
What the title? Of the song
Thank you very much liked and subscribed
What's the song from intro? Shazam is not helping :(
Contagious
I learned monster walks because of you🙃
can you please say how to do the rodney muleen trick where he swings his foot on both sides on the nose and the tail
the regular stance? can we not be goofy?
I have a new found love for freestyle skate ... Thank you! More please advice for advanced and extremely hard tricks ie spacewalk
+paulayala10 yessir! Those are coming next
Tail Stop are the Shit! Respect
Not tech savvy. Lol...dunno even how to subscribe. I'm 50 and started at 8 yrs old. Even had a cardboard deck for a few years of prison. Anyways it would help.if you slow-motion the clips and add how bent your knees are etc to a land for lack of better description. Love you
Thanks that video helps
you should make Andy Schrock do the Monster Walk next time he's out!!!
+shanedaddy512 good thinkin’ I need to hurry up and do a follow up to this video
Your hair in this video looks like mine in 1986.
i dig all this basic stuff
footwork is the coolest mike will we ever get part 2? please?
nvm just found ur footwork playlist haha
I'm so grateful and thankful for the opportunity you help me bro thank you so much and on this last note ,thought that was a penguin walk hahaha I like both names though
+Moses Delph 😁 thanks Moses! Yeah, idk if they’re the same but I’ve heard it called a penguin walk too. Names always confuse me a little
3 note I've been skating 21 years and street and stairs done enough ,freestyle had always had a hold on me and my dance
Amgrip 4 lyfe
0:46 who was that? Masahiro Fuji son?
+James Mata takashi suzuki
It would be awsome if you broke a record
+Galileo Sanchez haha what sorta record should I break? That would be tite
@@mike_osterman1 longest walk the dog
@@mike_osterman1most fingerflips in a minute, most rail tricks in a min
freestyle deserves a comeback, street skating is too overrated
am i the only one who thinks switch blades look so ugly
