    I’m glad you went over the basics. People think it’s stupid but it’s very useful and important.

    • @mike_osterman1
      @mike_osterman1  5 років тому +13

      Haha I hope they don’t think it’s stupid. This is absolutely the most important part of Freestyle :)

      Mike Osterman as long as your here...how many “standard” tricks do you usually do? I feel like your Waltz brand boards are a good inbetween for freestyle and average skateboarding. Obviously not to ALWAYS do skate park tricks on it but I feel like it’s a good inbetween design.
      Also, for a video talking about how “freestylers don’t do ‘real’ tricks” you should do you doing some standard tricks just as a laugh

      Faith Lewis it’s always someone new to skating and I think a lot of people who get good at skating forget that which is why most people call it stupid. But 100% agree even if I know how to do it I like seeing the basics.

    #1: tictac, "oh okay! As a pure beginner I can handle this!"
    #2: monster walk, "HOLY HANNAH, I'M GOING TO DIE."

    • @mike_osterman1

      😂 you can do this! It’s all about baby steps. Your first monster walk can be a bit more like a penguin walk, ie. Short choppy pivots first off of the tail, then off of the nose. Learning these first will help BIG TIME when you get to bigger tricks

    This is like, the 10th time I’m watching this video.
    I’ve been skating just about every day and sometimes I don’t want to try tricks like kickflips or things like that because my body just doesn’t feel like it. So I try some of these exercises instead.
    I kinda like how it is a lot more difficult than it looks. It’s a different challenge.

    Yooooo that backwards monster walk was so sick. I definitely have to work on some footwork once I have a day off where it doesn't rain. Great video Mike, thanks for making the end of my shift waaaaayyyy less boring.

  • @rcgldr
    @rcgldr 3 роки тому +2

    Part of the force that allows tic tacs to propel the board is lateral (sideways) forces while the wheels are turned outwards, somewhat similar to roller or ice skating (you push your feet outwards with the skates angled a bit outwards to propel forwards), so it's actually a combination of twisting and leaning. You can see the leaning in addition to twisting starting at 3:56 into the video. With sufficient speed, a skateboard can just be carved side to side to propel it, with upper body motion similar to tic tacs, without lifting the front wheels.
    If doing a series of small kick turns all in the same direction, all backside or all frontside, while moving in a circular path, you can steer and push the front wheels outwards just before doing a kick turn to propel the board a bit more.
    I'm an old guy (69 years old), just started skateboarding again (over 20 years since I last rode a skateboard for more than just a few minutes). Doing tic tacs again to propel the skateboard only took a few minutes to get used to, since it's how I almost always propelled the skateboard (I rarely pushed). Endovers and monster walks will be next, currently I'm just doing one 180 degree move at a time, waiting to make sure I end up stable, then doing the next 180. Sustained wheelies and 360's will probably be the most difficult tricks I plan to learn.

Always been a fan of your clean Monster Walks, but theyre something i do just here and there during my routines to get some speed from standing, so mine are obviously not as clean as yours. going from tic-tac to monster walk is quite a step tho, I tic-tac very smoothly and comfortably and I'm able to get quite a lot of speed doing it, have no problem going from fakey to regular even when going fast, but going from regular to fakey in the same way I find much harder to do.

I'm just getting back into skating since finding some Rodney Mullen doco on youtube and then going through a heap of old videos the passion is alive again! and I've just had a thought. You should totally send one of your boards to Rodney. I'm sure he would love to try it out! xD (if you haven't already). Why isn't freestyle taught as the foundation of street skating?
    I mean, it just seems like all these basics train balance, coordination, board control, ...
    Even if one isn't looking to do "freestyle" in the formal sense, just being able to do these things would greatly improve one's skateboarding, or so it seems from my noobish perspective.
    Look at Rodney Mullen, taking his freestyle to the street. He's doing pretty good for himself, you know, inventing trick boarding as we know it.
