I don't disagree when you say that he doesn't have a lot of flaws & doesn't really change over the course of the series, but I think that works when you consider the other characters that he's surrounded with. As far as my favorite Arnold moment, here are a few (in no particular order): 1) The tango with Helga (because that was a different side of Arnold); 2) Parents Day & The Journal (same reason); 3) -Eugene: "Uh, actually it's my turn to drive.". -Arnold: "Uh, no." (same reason); 4) "Stinky, shut up." (same reason); 5) Reuniting with his parents; 6) Kissing Helga
Arnold’s character development is very present, it’s just so spread across the different sessions that you have to watch the entire show to get it all.
I totally understood why he is the mecha uber fan-favorite of all Nickelodeon characters that he is after all those times of my life watching the show since childhood.
Arnold was too persistent with Lila, but she played a part in that also. There were times that she led him on ("Love & Cheese", "Timberly Loves Arnold")
Arnold was truly an awesome character. What I love about him was he was extremely humble and wise beyond years who always help numerous characters with problems of their own. He was selfless compassionate caring and a true hero. He was my favorite character.

I think Arnold is the perfect example of a flat character arc. It's where, instead of a character becoming better or worse through the story, he/she changes the world around them for the better or worse.
Just like Luffy in One piece or Tanjiro in Demon Slayer : His vision of the world does not need to evolve - or little in any case - because it is good from the start
Arnold is my favorite character of the entire show. He's just too perfect and has the right advices for everyone. If you watch the episode Deconstructing Arnold, it shows how much everyone needs Arnold for their personal life problems.
I agree with you, I really felt terribly bad for how Arnold's parents abandoned him for his whole entire life all the way up until the end of "The Jungle Movie" where he reunites with them which is so emotional and heartwarming to me
Which I hope if there'd be a season 6 hopefully, they'll make up a lot of time with him and possibly interact with other parents such as BBP and Miriam (who may probably find a redeemer and friend in Stella from her alcoholism and low self-esteem).
@@senorpedrosrooster agreed; as I've stated before in another video, it also would be great for them to find out about what his son's been doing while they were gone, especially the BAD moments.
Loved his relationship with his grandparents. So many great episodes just about that. Arnold is a bit of a mystical saint whose companionship is what lifts everyone he is trying to help. Though he's still human and makes mistakes and doesn't have all the answers even for himself, it just makes it more admirable that he tries to always be the same kind of friend to everyone.
I liked his relationship with his grandparents as well. I guess Arnold was like a saint. I liked how Arnold was honest when he didn't know what to do and sought help from others more knowledgeable than him. He didn't have all the answers and wasn't afraid to ask for help.
my boy arnold, great main character, i love how he always is optimistic and tries to find the positive in everything, and how caring/compassionate and supportive he is to his friends and others and how he always wants to help people in need of it, he's a very open person, i love his relationship with his grandparents, they raised him well, he's a good person with a good heart and he always stays true to himself and what he believes in. he's a real leader.
I completely agree. Arnold was a great main character because he was adaptable to every situation. He was there for everyone when they needed him. He was a great example of the right way to treat others. He had a great relationship with his grandparents, and I think that really shaped his personality. Yes, he was great leader, I can see Arnold going into politics or becoming a teacher.
1. Arnold really takes much from his parents. His open mindedness is really rooted from their experiences dealing with a lot of cultures and people. Of course, dealing with the occupants of the boarding house also strengthen it. His relentless persistence is definitely from his dad while the caring aspect is from his mom. 2. As much as Arnold believes that people are not always what they appear to be, considering that he helped many people, he does forget his own advice. This is true particularly in Ruth and Lila. He was seeking for people who are similar to him (altruistic and open), but realized that they are not really what he thinks of them, Lila in particular. Still, Im happy that his belief not only lead him to the right girl, but made her realize who she really is.
It's amazing how Arnold took after his parents without even meeting them. Good point, Arnold did not take his own advice sometimes. He was driven by his emotions when it came to girls. Exactly, Arnold failed to follow his advice when it came to Lila and Ruth, but when he did use his advice he was able to see through Helga.

Hmmm...my all time favorite Hey Arnold moment? That's a tough one. One that always stands out is the end of The List, when his grandmother sings Look Up. Always makes me smile
I have a friend who is a lot like Arnold. He moved away to Maine from California where we lived. I myself moved from California, but I still live over 1,000 miles away from him. I miss him, but I’m glad he is doing better.
@@DialUpDigest he is. I think he has a place in inland Maine, about a half hour from the coast. Beautiful plot of land he owns. He’s building a house there.
My favorite episode IS the one where Harold tries to fight him and instead he does THAT. The whole "I'm crazy" song was both hilarious and ingenious. I...might be one of the few people happy to see Arnold and Helga together after the jungle movie too. I thought it was sweet and hoped that she WOULD get the confidence to tell him or he would flat out tell her he likes her. Gerald will always be my favorite character because he WAS one of the characters that fueled my love of telling stories.
Decent video, you covered a lot, but as for Arnold's flaws, I'm really surprised you omitted how he tried to fill the void in him by fixing everyone's problems--and would even force himself onto them, despite their wishing he'd stop (Eugene's Birthday) or that he was SO desperate for things to be fixed, he subjected himself to public humiliation for Iggys forgiveness--which is completely on Arnold, and instead of learning a lesson from it, he NEVER forgives Iggy. In addition to that, Arnold does have an aggressive side that Helga has brought out--jumping down her throat unprovoked about how much he can't stand her and would rather be with anyone else as egg-caring partners, retaliating against her by throwing back paint, and rather notably, the intense anger and physical roughness he had with her during the April Fools Dance (mixed in with his own flirting, according to the creator) You can also argue that by and large though, later seasons Arnold is more mature than his earlier season counterparts, and that is a sign of growth. And, him having some problematic areas that aren't fixed or learned from helps prevent him from being perfect. Just my piece
6:33 I often wonder, Arnold doing Oskar’s job for him, isn’t that basically the same thing as an employee working off the clock? Aren’t there labor laws against that?
True, in real life, this would never be allowed - Arnold was only 9 and couldn't legally work, maybe with parental consent though. And he was doing Oskar's job which would be against an employment contract.
Yet Oskar’s boss at first thought Arnold was the one who applied for the job and considered Oskar too old for the job. In real life when I worked at ages 15 to 17 I remember I had to fill out paperwork and get a parent or guardian to sign. The grownups also used it to determine whether or not I need a physical to be eligible to work.
Oskar constantly came up with excuses for not delivering the newspapers, and had Arnold deliver them for him (first the stomach flu and then his aching back). Arnold caught Oskar lying to him, and everyone else thinks Oskar will never change. After hearing Arnold and Susie (Oskar's wife) complain about him, Oskar decides to prove to everyone that he can do his job.
I think Arnold would make an awesome friend; his points of view are legit, his criticisms are pure, and his ends justify his means, he'd be the perfect friend to anyone young and or old.
I never realized that Shortman was Arnold's last name. I always thought it was just a cute little nickname his grandpa called him because he was, indeed, a " short man", a clever little way of calling his grandson a kid.
The episode where I was impressed with Arnold optimistic view was the episode Crabby Author, where he had to write a book report about the author he admired, until he realized the author grow up to be a bitter old lady. But regardless Arnold still come to her house because he loved the books she wrote. And that scene in the classroom where even though Arnold has a bad experience with the author, he still wrote his book report about her and the classes reaction to his report is what got me mainly because they wouldn't expect such a sad and depressing report from a person like Arnold who usually optimistic. Also Gernald line thag I don't remember correctly but I think he said "sometimes you can't help everyone" I love this episode mainly because regardless on how Arnold optimistic is tested he still believe the good in people even if those people don't believe it themselves.
Potential careers for an older Arnold (in no particular order): Anthropologist, teacher/professor, guidance counselor, social worker, politician, psychologist, lawyer
Hey Arnold season 6 1.Gerald's haircut/ghost teacher 2.5th and 4th grader/written by helga 3.Helga's pet/hypnotized 4.Harold toughens up/Arnold and Olga 5.Helga on the court/runaway 6.Hillywood/helga's bow 7.Potty mouth/who's fuzzy slippers 8.Arnold for president/Helga excles 9.Peapod kid/football hits 10.Hey Helga/the biggest prank
The crushes Arnold has are shallow he only pays attention to helga when she's dressed in frilly clothes or has flowers in her hair which she clearly doesn't like not to mention as soon as someone prettier shows up he pays attention to them instead of helga
I episodes Fighting Families, the Journal, and Married they need to edit the parts where they say their is a smudge over the last name, the part where grandma belches during the reveal of Arnold's last name and the part when Helga calls him Arnold Pataki. When in the Jungle we find out his last name is actually the nickname the grandpa gas been calling him.
I've heard someone say Helga can get under Arnold's skin more than anyone else he has gotten angry with other people before but it's helga who can really make him snap
12:13 I think that is the only time he said the word “Shut up” or something rudely worded. This not only shows that he isn’t perfect and he does have flaws but that the Goodest of people have their limits.
@@stephj505 That would work for about 5 seconds. As soon as Arnold would give her that half-lidded look, &/or say something like "Don't worry, my love. You're in good hands.", her girlhood (or womanhood, at that point) would tremble like an earthquake. Their future kids would probably be mortified
I think that Arnold and Phil would have a similar conversation in the Jungle Movie to Simba and Mufasa's from The Lion King. Like Simba, Arnold disobeyed Phil's order of not going into danger and put his friends at risk. But Phil would most likely forgive him especially after he found his parents.
Imagine Helga giving birth to a football-headed baby. She'd be Stella times 1000, & I don't think anyone would be able to silence that volcano. ("YOU DID THIS TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬")
I absolutely love Hey Arnold! My childhood 😊 thanks so much for doing this cause Arnold was always my favorite hehe. I enjoyed this a bunch >w< Will you be doing his cousin Arnie anytime soon? o:
People say that Arnold & his parents moving to San Lorenzo would be good for Helga (& rightfully so), but it'd also be good for Arnold. Everyone in the "Hey Arnold!" universe needs to learn how to solve their problems without him. Arnold needs to learn that he can't be everything for everybody (especially Helga), & that there are times where you need to be a little more selfish & put yourself first. Lastly, Arnold & Helga need to reach the point where their feelings for each other are on an equal level (as well as a healthier one, in Helga's case).
Good points, everyone in Hillwood was way too reliant on Arnold. They lacked problem-solving skills. Arnold was very self-less, but I think he needed to be a little more selfish too. True, Arnold and Helga's feelings for each other did not seem to start off on an equal level. Hopefully as time progressed, the relationship would become a healthy one.
There was one episode where arnold trusted an adult whom Gerald had a bad feeling about and didn't listen because "cool adult with leather jacket and motor bike!"
9:00 Why the hell do Arnold's parents have grey streaks? They can't be that old. Arnold is only nine and the other parents(apart from Bob) look relatively young.
I think that was their way of showing how the characters aged. But I agree, it was silly to show them that way, in 9 years, they would have still been too young to have grey streaks 😊

lol, it's weird how she looked like she could be related to him yet he liked her 😆. It's worth the rewatch, it's a great show and I find the humor still holds up well 👍
Tons of good things I can say about Arnold that i can write a book about him. And that's just the first 9 years of the kids life. Sure Arnold has tendency to get involved when he shouldn't but he can't help it. Look at what the kid has accomplished. He helped mr H reunite with his daughter after so many years. Helped Torvald get better at doing math, even though he's still shaking down kids for cash. Gotten his grandfather and aunt to fix their sibling bond. And even helped his honorary uncle Ernie get a girlfriend. Just wish at times he would find ways to help himself. Though I did like when he went crazy against Harold. I still laugh when Arnold gets the trash can lids.
Arnold really had a long record of helping his community - he made what seemed impossible, possible. I agree, Arnold was a little too selfless and didn't stand up for himself when he should have. I loved that part where Arnold goes crazy, lol. That was such a creative idea to stop Harold from beating him up 😂
@@DialUpDigest you gotta admit his song about being crazy reminds you James Brown aka the godfather of soul. But back on topic. Despite Arnold's flaws he's a great kid and no matter what path he'll choose in life he'll be a great man.
And in the infamous Iggy betrays Arnold, when Iggy won’t forgive him he puts himself through the pain of Doing Iggy’s chores and even then it’s in vain and of course that horrible ending. Like if I was Arnold I would have been like “Screw you pal. I don’t need your forgiveness I have other friends. F*** this shit I’m out”.
Stinky: the voice of reason. Then again he says Arnold is no dapper Dan when in reality he was compared to Arnie. Also Stinky: sounds like some people I met in my life after 1999.
He has a tendency to overextend and over empathise which could lead to people taking advantage of him. He’s sensitive as well. Hmmm...my all time favorite Hey Arnold moment? That's a tough one. One that always stands out is the end of The List, when his grandmother sings Look Up. Always makes me smile
I love that song too 😊
Only good part of that episode, to be honest.
And I don't even like the song!

I have a friend who is a lot like Arnold. He moved away to Maine from California where we lived. I myself moved from California, but I still live over 1,000 miles away from him. I miss him, but I’m glad he is doing better.
That's so cool, if he's like Arnold he must be an amazing friend 😊
You're overanalyzing a cartoon?😐
Arnold is my favorite character in the series sometime
Politician or diplomat sounds right.
How about Helga?
@@senorpedrosrooster Writer/poet, lawyer, child psychologist (due to the influence of Dr. Bliss), or cop. I'd say that the first 2 are more likely
I could see him taking on any of those careers. I feel like he was already like a mini social worker for his city
It was mentioned in an episode that Arnold has the potential to be an ambassador, which is still fitting
Arnold is definitely the chillest guy ever 😌👍🔥

Finally, it's about time you finally did "Arnold" in the series. Too bad you didn't do him earlier on in the series, but better late than never
Yes, better late than never 😅
The crushes Arnold has are shallow he only pays attention to helga when she's dressed in frilly clothes or has flowers in her hair which she clearly doesn't like not to mention as soon as someone prettier shows up he pays attention to them instead of helga
True, he was shallow. I think that's pretty typical of kids that age though so it was an accurate portrayal.

I just love your videos! It’s obvious you put a lot of thought and effort into them :)
Thank you Alison! 😊
I was always curious as to what Arnold's real last name was. I'm glad we finally found out 😀
Whoa, you did a character anylasis on the star of the show himself, ARNOLD!
😆
He’s a really nice kid with a nice looking football-head
I've heard someone say Helga can get under Arnold's skin more than anyone else he has gotten angry with other people before but it's helga who can really make him snap
12:13 I think that is the only time he said the word “Shut up” or something rudely worded. This not only shows that he isn’t perfect and he does have flaws but that the Goodest of people have their limits.
When Arnold tells you to shut up, you know he's pissed off at you. 😡
Arnold has a good moral compass. Whats is there not to like about him. One the best cartoons made. His love life is a emotional rollercoaster.

Hey Arnold was my guilty pleasure

It was one of my favorites when I was a kid 😊
Me too
People say that Arnold & his parents moving to San Lorenzo would be good for Helga (& rightfully so), but it'd also be good for Arnold.
The only
There was one episode where arnold trusted an adult whom Gerald had a bad feeling about and didn't listen because "cool adult with leather jacket and motor bike!"
Yup. I watched it when it aired: November 20,1996.

Why the hell do Arnold's parents have grey streaks? They can't be that old. Arnold is only nine and the other parents(apart from Bob) look relatively young.
I think that was their way of showing how the characters aged. But I agree, it was silly to show them that way, in 9 years, they would have still been too young to have grey streaks 😊
Maybe it might have something to do with the sleeping curse they had.
Some people gray in their 20s and 30s.
@@DialUpDigest Miles and Stella had tons of Stress being in the Jungle for so many years. Stress can age and cause issues like Baldness. Doug Walker the Nostalgia Critic went completely Bald after the death of his Mother Sandy.

I love Arnold!
Arnold was a little too forgiving at times.
@@DialUpDigest that is also arguably a flaw.
