The Best Titanium Watches - 2021

  • Put next to stainless steel, titanium is a truly remarkable metal with greater lightness, strength and corrosion resistance. However, choosing a titanium watch can be difficult with prices often vastly exceeding steel counterparts and with the material's characteristics often poorly explained to the public. In this video, I would like to look at 5 titanium watches which really set themselves apart with a combination of fantastic features, serious quality and intelligent design.
    Featured Watches:
    - Bertucci (titanium models) - USD 145+
    - Christopher Ward (Trident) C60 Elite 1000 - GBP 995+
    - Sinn 103 Ti IFR - EUR 2,590+ / Sinn 103 Ti UTC IFR - EUR 3,090+
    - Tudor Pelagos - GBP 3,440
    - Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Titanium - GBP 6,670+ / Previous Generation - c. £4,000+

Thank you for bringing more well deserved attention to titanium sports watches. I love my titanium collection of Omega Planet Ocean 42mm, GS 200m Spring Drive diver, Seiko Prospex LX diver, Zenith Defy Classic, GS Spring Drive SBGA241 and recently acquired Hermes H08. Citizen have some very good titanium field watches too, and they are quite affordable.

I have the Pelagos LHD, dive with it everywhere and it's my favourite watch from a strong collection of divers. Had it for 3 or 4 years and only now wearing it on the rubber strap after mostly the bracelet or deadstock MN strap. I think it is perfect. I think the lug to lug being 50mm certainly helps smaller wristed people wear it. The only watch I will ever need.
I have the 7021 from 1969 as well so I have the start of the family tree with the roulette wheel and all. Makes me so happy to be honest. As a diver, a dive watch is part of my identity and the Pelagos is the best of them all, for me.

I recently purchased a Tudor Pelagos and I wear it daily. It is one of my favourite watches to wear from my very minimal collections; 3 Rolex, 2 Seiko, 2 Citizen, I Sub Combat Glycin, Vacheron Constantin 116 years 18K Gold Case Pocket Watch that, surprisingly provides a very accurate time in sync with my Pelagos and Rolex Datejust, 1 Soviet Era Vostok Pilot watch. I just recently discovered your site and decided to subscribe. Very well presented I must say, and thanks.

The Zelos Mako V3 in hardened titanium has some incredible specs for US$453 . It’s probably the best bang per buck/ best deal on the market currently, unless one is a watch snob and only wants “ Swiss Made”. Alternatively it can be a beater/ daily and for when you travel to those parts of the world where you don’t really want to have a + US $ 5000 watch on your wrist.

Great stuff, as ever. I love a titanium watch (as a geek/cyclist/diver). Standouts of the genre (?) are for me the mighty Tuna; Seiko's SBEX Marinemaster 1000m and Prospex SLA models and of course the Snowflake (the nearly perfect sporting/dress watch). I was considering a Pelagos and tried all versions on a couple of days ago. Great legibility and I was swayed towards the black version . I’m just a bit concerned as I’ve now heard a couple of people say that being titanium 2 it’s more towards the softer end and may be prone to scratches dents and marking ? I’m assuming it won’t polish our in quite the same way that steel would ? Great informative video and beautifully filmed as always

I’ve had my Pelagos for over 3 years and other than a few marks on the clasp, which are easily polished out, it looks new. I think the issue around marks and scratching is largely a non issue and the wearability benefits far outweigh this criticism in the real world.

@@i.am.hodgie thanks that’s very helpful. I do look after my watches as best I can and try and wear them on rotation when it’s relevant to just keep them ticking over so to speak. Feedback from an owner is the best representation, so I’ll have another try on I think. I like the colour variation on the lhd version , but I’m not sure I’d get used to it, so it may be the black, I have a blue Oris , so don’t want blue. Maybe there’s a green version in the pipeline. Strangely enough, a friend of mine was given a Steinhart Ocean 500 Titanium premium. They put an ETA 2892-A in that watch . I've been collecting for 50+ yrs , and although I know of and have read about Steinhart, I'd never really handled one before . He wears that peice al lk the time . When he was over I put it on my time grapher and was surprised to see a +2 second watch . All that for $600 USD. And that particular watch is not a straight up homage . Kind of impressive for the price.

What Omega continually fails to realize is while some people enjoy a large watch, no one wants a tall/thick watch. I'd buy that Planet Ocean in a heartbeat if not for the stupidly thick profile.

Titanium is lighter than stainless steel but not as strong. And it is also not as hard as steel unless it has been treated either by alloying or by special coating done at the factory. Untreated titanium will scratch rather easily (definitely easier than steel), and titanium is difficult to re-finish. So for sure it will be more expensive than steel. I personally prefer a titanium case over steel mainly because of the weight reduction for the same size casing.

Best no best of lol titanium is high end seikos and grand seiko which I have three of them, best zaratsu polish and titanium and I am sure no Swiss will get near their finish.

Love the prices that you mentioned and of course it’s all but impossible to mention all the titanium models available… But, I do believe that you may have missed one obscure model that should be in this list at some level. It has its own unique design that is iconic also boasts its own in house movement, of course is titanium in build, and tends to be collectible as well… Model GMWB5000TB-1

Don't understand why non divers buy dive watches and why non pilots buy pilot watches. Also do divers and pilots really use mechanical watches? I am considering a titanium Bertucci for my next watch.

Optics and robustness. Both kinds of watches are easy to read in a fraction of a second, and they are usually build relatively robust.
Pilot watches (to me) have a humble elegance. I am no pilot, but i bought a Sinn 857 which i use at work. I work in electromagnetic fields so i wanted the antimagnetic inner casing they offer, i have my hands in 19" cabinets that contain different electronic systems and cabeling from time to time. Nothing in there is made to avoid scratches on your hands or watch. So i wanted the scratch resistance. I prefer dials that are easily readable under all circumstances. No matter if i have to climb a transmission mast, shovel snow to even get to the system i have to troubleshoot, if it's sunny or rainy, light or dark...
And it's 200m water resistance mean that i don't have to worry about what i do with water (or dust), it won't be a problem, and i can wash the watch and not have to baby it when cleaning.
So it might be called a pilots watch, but it's features are what fit my usecase. (And the tegimented case really is scratch resistant. The ceramic insert of the bezel on the other hand i managed to scratch. But that's to be expected...)
A G-shock would also fit my use, but none of them is as easily readable as a good 3 handed watch. (i still have one for emergency use) And is by some also called a divers watch.
