Bryan Adams refused to put "Diana" on the Reckless remaster because he felt it was too disrespectful to Princess Diana after her death/murder. And I gotta agree... I love Undercover. Bought it brand new and immediately loved "Too Much Blood". It didn't age too well but aged well enough for me to still love it.

Great video! Tons of great stuff mentioned here. A couple other strange b-sides: The Who's mid-1960s single Substitute had a b-side recorded by a different band, the song was Waltz For a Pig. Also the 1968 Neil Diamond single Two-Bit Manchild had a track called Broad Old Woman (6 A.M. Insanity) on the b-side, in which the take breaks down several times and much of the playing time is filled with discussion about how the song should go and joking around.

My memory is a bit hazy on exact dates, but back in September or October of 1996, a NYC radio station broadcasted a Nirvana A-Z special; every song the band had ever recorded, and in alphabetical order. Actually, that minus 7 - there was a contest at the end of it where if the right caller could correctly name the seven songs that didn't get played, the winner would receive some goodies. It was a one night only thing, and it lasted for HOURS...album tracks, covers, B-sides, outtakes, live recordings, etc. Now, I didn't catch all of it (I was in and out at various points, so maybe half?), but I caught a hell of enough of it to say that I became an even bigger Nirvana fan than I already was after experiencing that awesome night. I still have much of this program recorded across a mixtape (or two). After that, I would always spot many import Nirvana CD singles in the record/CD shops when browsing, but being they were so expensive (and me being in high school at the time), I didn't have nearly enough money to acquire them, so I never bought any. However, I did buy a German import disc that contained a bunch of those B-sides/outtakes/non-album tracks, and - indeed - "Sappy" was then known as "Verse Chorus Verse"; that's what it was called when I heard it on the radio back in '93/'94, and that's what it's listed as on my B-sides/outtakes disc. You like KISS (as do I.) Did you know Nirvana covered "Do You Love Me?"? It's on some rare compilation that I think is out of print.
I, too, love "Burn" from NIN; killer track - I have that on the deluxe edition of The Downward Spiral (great album.) I love a bunch of Smashing Pumpkins' B-sides, and their B-sides/outtakes disc called Pisces Iscariot got listened to like crazy.
Prince's catalogue is a mess, lol. I have that same Hits/B-sides box set. Like one commenter mentioned, he's got tons of B-sides and outtakes, and on top of that, he's got extended versions of those (along with his extended A-sides). It's insane. I'm a Prince fan, but I'll admit that, unlike the one commenter, I haven't gone quite that deep down the rabbit hole.
    Long post. Awesome video!

Huge Prince fan! Glad to hear you give him some love here! As much as I love "Erotic City" my favorite b-side is "17 days" from the "When doves cry" single! The full length version was leaked as a bootleg a few years ago and is amazing! As for "Gotta stop (messin' about)", it was also released as the lead song on a US 12" promo as well as the 2 UK releases of it.
You also mentioned how "The hits/The b-sides" CD has a whole CD of his b-sides. Believe it or not, that disc didn't include all the b-sides up to that point. It was missing "Love or $" the b-side of "Kiss" and "Alexa De Paris" the b-side of "Mountains". As great as the b-sides disc is, it is only the short versions of the songs. To really appreciate some of the songs like "Another lonely Christmas", "Hello", "She's always in my hair", "Feel u up", "Girl", etc etc etc. you need to hear the full length versions on the original 12" singles!
The "We are the world" album also includes the original version of the Prince song "4 the tears in your eyes" only available here ("Hello" was written about the flack he took for not singing on the song "We are the world"). The song is included as a stripped down version on "The b-sides". So, um, yeah. Sorry I got carried away LOL! I have over 400 Prince 12" singles from 20+ countries and still going :D

I always thought it was cool that the first CD releases of Nevermind had that hidden track way at the end. Found it because my CD player showed that the track time was still running long after Something In The Way was finished. So I fast-forward and there it was, a hidden song, no reference to it on the CD and it wasn't there on subsequent releases. Even the giant Nevermind deluxe set I have on vinyl, that song is not there. Someone told me the song's title, but I don't recall.

Thank you for the recommendations, they sound intriguing. I always seem to find something in your videos that's either insightful and/or entertaining; thought provoking. Somewhere in there you said something about putting yourself back in the time of the millennium, and what came up for me was being at a local flea market and finding an advance copy of a used CD I'd never heard of: Jim White's "The Strange Tale of Wrong-Eyed Jesus". With the weirdest cardboard sleeve artwork, I gladly paid a dollar and put this on when I got home....never heard anything like it before. This was just before 9/11, and this disc's narrative almost felt like prophesy, in a way I can't describe. I had gone online and saw that Mr. White had been a cab driver in New York. So weird. Most notorious in my mind is the B side to "Wrapped Around Your Finger" by the Police, an utter disappointment called "Someone to Talk To." If my memory of the Message in a Box booklet is correct, Sting didn't like the song and refused to sing it, essentially backing out at the last minute and infuriating Stewart. Andy's attempt to sing his own song is godawful, and the lyrics of the verses are clunky. Now I've never liked the CD bonus track to Synchronicity "Murder By Numbers." Would "Someone To Talk To" have been the better bonus closer if Sting had sung it and finessed the lyrics of the verses? Because the arrangement and guitar solo are amazing. That's my alternate reality Synchronicity CD.

Mr. Fithen, your saying that the singing on "Superstar" is "like he's singing on a radio from Heaven" made me think of the song "In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator)" from Eraserhead. That song was composed and performed by Peter Ivers. He was also the host of New Wave Theatre. He was murdered and the case is unsolved to this day. I'm not a betting man, but I'd bet that you're familiar with the show. I guess that makes me a betting man.
Are you familiar with the band Unit: 3 With Venus? They performed the song "B.O.Y.S." on New Wave Theatre. The singer of the band, Venus DeBaun, was a child. Her parents were also in the band. Daddy sang bass, mama sang . . . Sorry. Her mama played the bass and her daddy played keyboards. Their performance can be seen here on UA-cam. I prefer their song "Beer." A performance of that song can also be seen here on UA-cam. It was filmed for the 1981 documentary Surfpunks. In that song, Venus, the pint-sized air-raid siren, belts out these hard-hitting lyrics: "Beer! Beer isn't good for you! I don't like beer!"
"Bring back Prohibition! We must stop the Hun!" I hear you yelling.
No, settle down. I'm not a drinking man, but I don't like Wayne Wheeler. Adding poison to industrial alcohol isn't good for you. My comments are good for you, I'm sure you'll agree. Thanks for indulging me.
If you want to indulge your taste for rare punk singles you can buy the 7" for "Beer" right now on Discogs for $180 (plus $5 for shipping and handling). The most it sold for is $500. Why anyone would pay that much money for the record is another mystery. When did punks become so rich?

I saw a 40th generation VHS of Surfpunks years ago, but barely remember it. I will look for the "Beer" song, though. Sounds intriguing. Oh yes, Eraserhead.

Flashdance OST is excellent. Lots of soul and quality singing including Irene Cara, Karen Kamon, and Maniac by Michael Sembello. Very suited to the movie.

He wrote it and did it as a B-side in 1984, but radio still played it. It was originally going to covered by Bette Midler.

I always wondered if anyone would ever recognize Girl On LSD by Tom Petty. I was 10 maybe 11 years old when I got the cassette single for You Don't Know How It Feels, and just playing that B-Side and singing it around the house, its a fun song. I feel like I can do a video about rare tracks and B-sides that I like, there is like a lot, for instance, there is a movie that came out in the 90's called Boys On The Side, and the big song on that soundtrack was Bonnie Raitt covering Roy Orbison's You Got It, but my favorite track was The Pretenders covering Every Day Is Like Sunday, way better than Morrissey's original. There's a song that my friend Billy Steinberg wrote with Rick Nowels & Kylie Minogue, called Whenever You Feel Like It, its was intended for her 2000 album, Light Years and almost went on the Fever album, but instead got released on the soundtrack for the first Scooby Doo movie, even though it doesn't appear on the film, there is a better mix that was released as part of the bonus disc for the UK and Canada release of Fever. Great video Robert!!!

I know it's like, your opinion man, but your "opinion" about Blur is wrong. No good B-sides? Maybe the best non-album b-side ever -- "Young and Lovely" - b-side to "Chemical World" from Modern Life is Rubbish. "The Man Who Left Himself" and "Tame" were besides to "Stereotypes" from The Great Escape. Also: Eine Kleine Lift Music, All Your Life, A Spell (For Money), Swallows in the Heatwave, So You, and Sir Elton John's Cock. I hope that was just one of your little jokes because .... otherwise, I'm gonna go have a good long cry. Anyways -- another great video. I looked up a lot of the songs you mentioned as I watched b/c I'd never heard of them. Love that Springsteen and Luna song. Loved Luna's Bewitched album and "Tiger Lilly Girl." That Guns n Roses was... well maybe the Blur opinion makes sense

Blur must have quite a few because I heard several and the only one from that list was "Swallows in the Heatwave". I think the Guns N Roses was a relic of the times.

@@RobertFithen They do have a lot of b-sides. Probably more than any band I'm aware of. That's partly why I was surprised to hear you say that. They were one of the first bands I really got into - after the Beatles and U2 and Huey Lewis. I like them so much it's probably hard for me to be objective, but Swallows in the Heatwave??? That's some good shit! You should check out Young and Lovely though -- probably better than anything on their first two albums. No accounting for taste though. That Tom Petty LSD song was another one I've never heard. Good stuff
