Jonas Kaufmann is a good singer but his timbre is that of a baritone more so than a tenor which somewhat spoils the effect when having a duet between tenor and baritone. Apart from that his interpretation is very good of course.
Absurd production. They all tried very hard. The soprano sounds very cold and boyish and somewhat ethereally disconnected from the text. The “Lulu” echos and the look are in the wrong opera. The tenor too dark and wooly for Alfredo. It all sounds weird. Like a iridescent butterfly being net caged by gruff trolls in the forest. The colors are all odd. It’s a Germanic reading. Almost like Elisabeth Schwarzkopf singing this. Strange. Fascinating yet this is probably one of the most Italianate opera ever and it’s just not coming forth. It would have likely been better in their native German.
