  • Gary Sinise talks about his famous role as Lt. Dan in the movie “Forrest Gump” and his need to support service members and their families. Sinise met Marine Lt. Col. Bryan Forney and his wife, Jennie, at Brooke Army Medical Center nearly two year ago and they have kept in touch since. Watch as Forney walks in to surprise Sinise as the ESPN cameras capture this special moment.

      With or without the medal, if we had 2 Gary Sinise around supporting vets in rehabilitation, they can do much more than our politicians have ever achieved. He already won his medal and the gates to heaven in my heart.

      Surprising to absolutely nobody was that the Domino Theory, about how all of Asia would turn communist if Vietnam fell, was complete bullshit.

      also gotta have respect for Robin Williams and what he did for the troops as well. going over to bases in Afghanistan and performing comedy routines for all of them, and even making sure to say hi to the troops who couldnt come to the show because of being on guard duty.

    As a Vietnam veteran. I want to say that Gary Sinise is a great man. He is a fantastic moral booster and he really cares deeply about our servicemen and women. He is like Bob Hope was in that venture. Gary is the most recognized military supporter that comes to our bases these days. And the Lt Dan band actually sounds pretty good! Thank You Gary Sinise for all that you do for service personnel and veterans.

      Not criticizing what you said about Sinise or taking anything away from him, but there is another rocker who takes pride in performing for our troops, and without much fanfare. Her name is Joan Jett. Kudos to all celebrities who can put aside politics and perform for those serving so far away from home in dangerous parts of the world.

      You can throw in Five Finger Death Punch to that list. I got to do a meet and greet with them last year and they put on a great show for a lot of sailors. Seems they know the Navy is a part of our armed services also.
      As a former sailor myself it was a pleasure to have met them. Just wish they had been around back when I was in. 1985-89 USS Constellation CV-63. We use to have a lot of big name acts put on concerts for us back then in San Diego.
      I can't say I have ever even seen a photo of Gary Sinise with a sailor. Doesn't mean there isn't one out there just that I haven't seen one. Maybe oneday people will realize the Navy is more than just the SEAL Teams.

    I have immense respect for Gary. After his role as Lt. Dan, Gary developed a deep respect for veterans. As an Air Force veteran, I would love to meet Gary, and thank him for all he does to help veterans.

      I was fortunate that he came to DC to do a show when I was stationed at Belvoir(Army veteran) and I got to meet him. I had to break off the conversation. He would have kept talking to us forever(I told him about recovering from my combat injuries to go on and conceive natural triplets and then had to be back in shape SUPER fast. I was having a really hard time due to the spinal fusion ans other problems dropping weight after the triplets . He just wanted to comfort me. I've met many celebrities (From Dayto a beach and MTV, BET, and other things always brought celebrities, then later meet and greets. Only one other celeb just sat and had a tête à téte with me. He was great. I hope you catch him at one if the vet shows he does.

    This gentleman is one of the few that uses his “ fame” for a good cause and he does it all behind the scenes, you don’t really see him in the news for all the work that he does. I can’t express it in words… I wish I could meet him one day.

      He's been working for the troops for years. He's raised money to give disabled veterans handicap-accessible houses and I think he helps get them service dogs and all sort of other things they need.
      He said everywhere he goes, troops recognize him, but a lot don't know his real name and apologize that they only know him as "Lt. Dan," but he says that's fine, they can call him that. Most actors hate being type-cast, but he embraces it because it's become a calling for him.

    Mr Sinise is such a GOOD guy. He is one of the few celebrities I have the utmost respect for. He is well grounded, smart, humble, and loving. He is an example of how every American should be.
    We should NEVER stop supporting our troops and first responders who were injured and/or honorably retired.

    I have read Gary's book "Grateful American". He truly is a grateful American, not just by his words, but being a doer. A great actor, but an even better man.     I can personally attest to his kindness. One of my friends is a gold star widow. The kindness he has shown to that family is immeasurable. He keeps in touch with all of the kids. When the son entered my alma mater, Texas A&M, he sent a card wishing him well. This is after years of sending the kids of gold star families to Disney World every year. God bless him.

      @@timunknown6724 Started during WW1, families with serving military members displayed a blue star. If that member died in battle, the blue star was replaced by a gold star. This was displayed as a banner in the window and with lapel pins.

    I remember being in Iraq and him being one of the first celebrities to come out and visit the troops. I just remember thinking how considerate it was that a celebrity took time out to come to such a dangerous horrible place and visit us.

      Thing is he was already into that stuff but it took him above and beyond. He was actively looking for such a role. He always supported veterans, having listened to the stories of a brother in law and other family members.

    What Gary Sinise does with the Lt. Dan Band is awesome, he is such a true Patriot and supporter of our troops. But the way his face lit up when the Lt. Col. walked in the room made my eyes leak!! He is such a gentleman and a class act!! As the daughter, wife and daughter-in-law and aunt of veterans and a currently serving nephew, I can’t thank him enough for what he does!!     As a VA ICU nurse for decades, this man is the real deal.
    I have so much respect for him and the work he does.
    I worked with so many resilient veterans, but I also cared for so many of the broken ones who served during WWI to the present time.
    There is no greatest generation.
    Each generation produces those needed at the time.
    Valor & sacrifice, and resilience is demonstrated by all.
    The only difference is how we Americans value those who served.
    All are the greatest.

    I grew up in the '60s so I am a little bias. But for me, "Forrest Gump" is the greatest movie ever. Because it not only displayed the absolute INSANITY, but also the intense LOVE, the bitter DIFFERENCES, and also the final VICTORY of the best folks of that era. An absolutely AMAZING movie....

    I love the fact that Gary Sinese uses his celebrity for such a good cause .
    I come.from a military family parents served in ww2 older brother husband and peers served in Vietnam Nam all Marines all now deceased so this is particularly touching for me so many of our troops didn't come home but this man did and his bravery is incredible in the face of all his physical trials great great video you need to watch the tribute that Gary Sinese and other celebrities take part in every year in Washington D.C. It is very poignant and heart wrenching personal stories are told my brother would bring his buddies home from MCRD when he was in boot camp one particular young man wouldn't make it home you can find his story on Together We Served Larry Nerhing i urge you to look at it a wonderful tribute to him and every veteran who has served our country in every capacity

    I remember Col. Forney's story, and it still blows me away to see a man talking in an interview who is missing a substantial part of his head. It says a lot about the resilience of life, but more about his determination and grit. I'd like to think that I'd be able to do the same in that situation and not just give up, but I doubt it.
