- RARE OLDIES SOUNDIES WITH THE INTERNATIONAL SWEETHEARTS OF RHYTHM ! The International Sweethearts of Rhythm was the first integrated all women's band in the United States. During the 1940s the band featured some of the best female musicians of the day. They played swing and jazz on a national circuit that included the Apollo Theater in New York City, the Regal Theater in Chicago, and the Howard Theater in Washington, DC . After a performance in Chicago in 1943, the Chicago Defender announced the band was, "One of the hottest stage shows that ever raised the roof of the theater! More recently, they have been labeled "the most prominent and probably best female aggregation of the Big Band era .
This is my grandmother. Anna Mae Winburn
She is so awesome and dam what a beauty!!!!
Wow. That's really interesting. I'm an MA student and would love to talk to you about that if you have the time. I should be easy to find on Facebook - I made a post on 13th November about The International Sweethearts.
She is fine and hot.
Beautiful and talented
Anna Mae was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
there needs to be a movie about these girls!
Look for the documentary here : Internat. Sweethearts....
I have never been so blown away. This band is incredible and way overdue for recognition. The talent in the band just blows me away. Thank goodness they had such high self-esteem and self-worth to go beyond their dreams in music during that period. I am just in awh and overwhelmingly speechless!
Rest in Peace, Helen Jones Woods. She was a trombone player in this band and she died recently of COVID-19
There was a news segment on her this morning. I had never heard of her or this band, but found them here. These ladies were pioneers.
"Swing Shift: All-Girl Bands of the 1940s," a book by jazz historian Sherrie Tucker, goes into wonderful detail about the International Sweethearts of Rhythm and other all-woman bands: all black, all white and mixed, like the Sweethearts. Fascinating! So glad to find videos of them. Thanks for posting.
the woman on the piano is sooo cute
I'm doing research for a series of articles on women and the origins of rock, and I found this band. My god, they are so good, and so charismatic. I've learned that they were not just integrated, but multiracial, and had to fight through some pretty awful prejudice as a result. What heroes they are, and what a crime that they were almost erased from history.
This is really special!!! My dad introduced me to this beautiful band. First integrated all female band! Wow!! I love jazz so much!! It’s just beautiful music!!
They look like beautiful independent women. I love it 😍💕💕
What a brilliant upload, they are super musicians and the lady leader is stunning.

Wow, they are incredible good, Love it💜, this video is a gem
Wonderful
Black people have so mush rich history. We have enough black movie executive producers and directors to make movies about such legendary black people in history.
Forget color. These people were really great musicians. Great entertainment.
They could swing.
So great

The band has great charisma...They also have a tough look to them as well...Like they would take you out back and kick the shit outta you if started any trouble....
Or, y'know, some of the best *musicians* of the day. No need at all for the modifier. ;)
Awesome talent! Too bad there was no video of Eddie Durham's All Girl Orchestra ever made.
wow
Jazzy
She looks like Janelle Monae.
The lead singer looks like Lena Horne, her hairstyle, singing voice, and the way she dances.

❤️
Shout out to all the students from Lupo's class who procrastinated on his summary paper.
This seems to be a different version of the band, since Pauline Braddy is not on drums. Does anyone know who this drummer might be?
I am not sure, but it looks like it might be Viola Smith. Smith was white and the drummer looks like she might be. Of course, this would have been a bit controversial at this time, but not unheard of. Unfortunately I did not see a close up of the drummer in this video.
Not Lena Horne. Looks a sounds a bit like Ethel Waters. ?

Super, thank you. I love listening to and watching her.
