  • RARE OLDIES SOUNDIES WITH THE INTERNATIONAL SWEETHEARTS OF RHYTHM ! The International Sweethearts of Rhythm was the first integrated all women's band in the United States. During the 1940s the band featured some of the best female musicians of the day. They played swing and jazz on a national circuit that included the Apollo Theater in New York City, the Regal Theater in Chicago, and the Howard Theater in Washington, DC . After a performance in Chicago in 1943, the Chicago Defender announced the band was, "One of the hottest stage shows that ever raised the roof of the theater! More recently, they have been labeled "the most prominent and probably best female aggregation of the Big Band era .
You can watch all my rare oldies soundies & vidéos on : www.myspace.com... ! Many thanks , NICKY .

My mom, Norma Carson Newman, played trumpet with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm. Not sure if she was with them in '46. The stories she used to tell were always riveting. She passed in late 2005. I'm SO missing her today. Happy Mother's Day, Mom. I love you!

    She was seriously hot.
When I hear her sing that part "A rocking chair to rock, a rubber ball to roll..." is evidence that Rock & Roll had it's roots way back then.

James Brown You can rightfully go back even further into the '30's for the origins of rock music with SISTER ROSETTA THARPE she paved the way for all rock musicians that came after her.

"probably best female aggregation of the Big Band era" As a longtime '40s music nut I can guarantee that this was the best all-female working jazz band of the '40s. (There were also great all-female jazz records sometimes that were pickup sessions, not working bands.)
