    cool tips Jeff, thanks! I also often play along and try to exactly match what Miles or whoever I'm listening to is doing, all the nuances. Later, at a gig say, I don't try to copy or play exactly anymore, but retain the "feeling" about how a masters plays.

    So I'm trying to transpose a solo with many runs of 16th notes in it. Do you think it would be bad technique to slow down the recording? Will that make me a worse transcriber since I'm making it easier?

    • @Armando_Gutierrez
      @Armando_Gutierrez 6 років тому +5

      Chase Lanier I personally slow it down when I really can’t hear the pitches up to tempo. As a last resort. Besides that, I try to find easier solos to transcribe:)

    • @musicmichaelc
      @musicmichaelc 5 років тому +15

      I think it’s perfectly normal to slow the recording down for learning fast passages, in fact one will learn more thoroughly that way. The great Lennie Tristano had his students sing solos with the LP playing at half speed, and only when they had fully internalized it at half speed would he let them go to full speed.

    • @mlequim
      @mlequim 2 роки тому

      Slowing down change the pitch no? So I think it depends of how much you slow it down. A slight -small change could not be harmful and of a great help.

  • @kibavlood5826
    @kibavlood5826 7 років тому +2

    Jeff i dont know if your going to answer this but in transcribing how do you differentiate if its a scale, arpeggio or outside playing, your transcribing a record that was notorious for all of the above mentioned. So my question is how to you make sense of what you transcribed like "Oh this is in Pentatonic scale" or "Oh this is an arpeggio.." or like "Ah thats Dorian, Ionian..."
    Its a silly question but something that would be vital to know cause then you get o see what the mindset was of the artist.

    Hey Jeff, thanks for the lesson. I'm interested in doing this for Love's Serenade by Ramsey Lewis for Alto Sax. What Ramsey Lewis does on piano is masterful and there is nothing better. However, I feel it will sound incredible played on the Alto Sax. Thanks for any input you suggest in making this challenge a success.

  • @smatlanta1
    @smatlanta1 7 років тому

    When you are hearing, singing and saying the scale tone, are you singing the scale degree of EACH chord or for the key center. In other words, if if you are in Bb in Rhythm changes and get to the bridge, and hear a D on the D7, do you say 1 or do you say 3? If your answer is to say 3, if the chords are A-7 / D7 do you 11 over the A-7 or do you think D7 the whole time? ...not trying to make it more difficult,... just trying apply it the way you like to think of it all. I realize there is no "right" answer and the important steps are the hearing and singing and playing part of it.

    Hi Jeff, on average how many transcriptions does it take before an individual is able to start hearing melodic and soloing ideas in his/her head?
    I have perfect pitch, making transcribing easier. As of now, I’ve transcribed:
    1) piano solo from Freddie Freeloader
    2) piano solo from Caravan by Tommy Flanagan
    3) piano solo from Afternoon in Paris by Cedar Walton
    4) Waltz for Debby by Bill Evans
    5) Piano solo from C jam blues by Oscar Peterson
    6) saxophone solo from Blue Bossa by Dexter Gordon
    7) saxophone solo from Au Privave by Charlie Parker
    8) saxophone solo from Confirmation by Charlie Parker
    However, I feel that I’m still unable to improvise well. How many more jazz standards do I need to transcribe before I can hear melodies in my head?

    Hi
    A question: during uni times I used to aim transcribe a full solo over a period of a week, but now it seems almost impossible to achieve that goal due to music commitments, do you find more useful with your busy agenda to transcribe little fragments on a daily basis (when you have time) and work them during a couple of days? Also do you keep track of those fragments so you can always go back to them in the future?

    Jeff how would you apply the scale degree thing to something that changes constantly? I'm trying to learn bebop scales in 12 keys and it would be handy to think of the tunes in scale degrees but are you doing that over the hey to the tune or of the moving chord changes?
    Your videos are great. Thanks!

      It is easy to think on 1 while you are singing over the I chord, but when it changes, do you still retain the I or figure it out from the root of the next chord, or maybe both? When it goes to the IV for example the 1 doesn't have that releasing feeling, it changes its meaning. I ask that because I'm really stuck on playing over changes Anyway, thank you very much

    • @ronaldo.araujo

    Hi Jeff, First I wanna excuse me for my very bad english.
    I really love your videos, and on that one : "the best way to transcribe a solo" i wanna ask you how to find the chords of the solo, in this videos you tell us but i have problems to find em.
    I also wanna ask you, if we transcribe a solo, when we transpose, we can keep the fact the solo is for complete key, or we should learn each lines per chord, for example : we have a song in key of G, and we like a line played on G7 , so that line we can play it only on the seventh chord or we can play it on the key of G whatever the chord played.
    Thank You

  • @not_another_muhammad
    @not_another_muhammad 6 років тому +1

    Logistical question: do you work through the entire solo before transposing, or transpose into all 12 keys phrase by phrase?

    • @JeffSchneiderMusic
      @JeffSchneiderMusic  6 років тому

      +Muhammad Dawjee usually the former, but sometimes I won’t bother transcribing the show solo and just figure out the parts I like most and go through the transposing process on those select lines

    • @not_another_muhammad
      @not_another_muhammad 6 років тому

      Excellent! Thank you - I was getting bored of working in the same key and only about an eighth through a solo - it's a modal based tune which makes it even more tedious, but I'll stick it out, I think there's something to learn about how the soloist builds the structure of his solo in that harmonic context.

    • @JeffSchneiderMusic
      @JeffSchneiderMusic  8 років тому

      +Dominic Dellamarino Hi Dominic, Great question. Hearing the bass notes on some tracks can be tough. As with most things, time, experience, and practice will help the most. You can try EQing the bass up and the treble down to help focus your attention on the bass parts. Selective listening is a skill in itself. I suggest listening through entire album only paying attention to one instrument, like the bass, or the snare drum. It takes a lot of focus, but is well worth the effort. Let me know how it goes!
