You did an amazing job with this video Fritz! It is clear how much effort you put into this.....well done!!
thank you so much!
I liked Debra Winger, but I wasn't really blown away by her, she didn't leave that much of an impression, but Shirley, however, was unforgettable and remains lodged in my mind.
As you've said, acting is subjective - what one finds effective, another doesn't
Shirley killed it!
Thank you for this wonderful video. I had great fun watching it. Excellent comments and accurate observations as always. Please keep it up!
Thank you vey much!
My all time favorite year for this category. Throw a dart at any name and your selection wouldn't be wrong...
It was one of the BEST Female characters ever written for the screen and SHIRLEY KILLED IT ! Well deserved !
Love this video, love all your videos. You are so talented, so glad I found you
Thank you so much for thise kind words!
going to watch this after i watch terms of endearment! love your videos
Thanks so much!
Amazing video: I'm blown away by your effort and your love for the detail. I absolutely agree with your choice of Debra Winger just on the performance and acting alone. As you have said: Everything fell in Shirley MacLaine's place that year/Oscar race but as I would have awarded Shirley for ,The Apartment' (1960) at the 1961 ceremony, I could have voted for Debra here without a guilty conscience ;)
Debra's character Emma's everyday struggles of being a daughter in a complicated mother relationship, an unhappy married woman, a mother despised by her elder son and a woman dying of cancer while being outspoken, stubborn, resilient and fearless are rarely depicted as unadorned and unsentimental as in her performance. So many beautiful vignettes, scenes and moments that Debra gets the maximum out of: My favourite scene is at the supermarket with her kids, where she doesn't have enough money for all the groceries and after returning some of the things (while her elder son is embarrassed), she includes new items and gives the casher this confrontational look of courage, self-worth, dignity, resilience with slight hope for solidarity. That gaze alone is worth an Oscar.
Thank you for acknowledging Debra's wonderful and delightful performance. She's really an actress whose work is overdue for rediscovery
Thanks for your nice words and I'm happy that you also love Debra so much
Both MacLaine and Winger were outstanding, but Winger’s Emma was the more uniquely memorable. I can’t remember…why didn’t they nominate her for Best Supporting Actress? It is tragic that she didn’t have a longer and busier career.
More perceptive analysis, such a pleasure to watch.
OMG I cried at the end
Shirley MacLaine was absolutely brilliant in " Some Came Running"...it is a performance that still astounds, that shatters your heart after all these many years. In my opinion, it was the best of her career. I love The Apartment but Lemmon was "the straw that stirred the juice" in that movie. Of all his performances, that one . along with The Days of Wine and Roses and , for me , Missing are his greatest . Debra Winger was terrific in Terms of Endearment but the "club" that is the Academy liked MacLaine more than this "young, outspoken" outsider...an outsider who never wanted to be an "insider". Career suicide...actually. Also, I am so grateful that the algorithms sent me to your vlog. It is extremely informative and excellently produced. Thanks
Thank you for watching and finding my page! :)
I didn't know about Sissy Spacek. I wish she would have had the role. She is the best and she would have made the film much better. It's already great but with Sissy, it would have been even better.
I agree. As I stated in my comment, Winger was the go-to actress for a couple of years. McClaine and Sissy spent a lifetime being well respected actresses with a list of credits thru the decades. Winger was Meg Ryan... trendy for a minute.
Pauline Kale called Winger the "most exciting actress" of her era for a good reason.
Kael
Hooray - a new Fritz video!
Glad you're happy about it!
@@FritzandtheOscars Always delighted to watch your fantastic videos.
Loved it!!
Thanks so much!
Is that a picture of Luise Rainer you flashed up at 50:10? I think you made a similar reference on a previous video. Will you be doing an episode on her back to back wins or going into detail as to the reasons she left Hollywood or her early career?
Yes, that is Luise - I try to include her at least once in each video :D I actually made a while video about Luise's life and her career. You can find it here: ua-cam.com/video/1CqJb6rqPn4/v-deo.html
Debra Winger is my choice pick.
I went to see Terms because of the comebic promo trailer preview and expecting a comedy I left shell shocked and wrung out. Great movie. It took me until Network to get over disliking Jeff Daniels. Then I loved him.
The difference between Winger and McClaine is Winger was a flash In the pan go-to 80s actress, Shirley McClaine lasted a lifetime. Winger was Meg Ryan.... popular for a minute. Jus'sayin
If Debra Winger had went Supporting she would have won.
Maybe but she has even more screentime than Shirley MacLaine
@@FritzandtheOscars 🤷🏻♂️ she obviously wanted (and deserved) a place in Lead. Many thought this was foolish as her being placed in supporting would ensure a win.
It’s nice that she didn’t resort to category fraud in the end I suppose. All while knowing she couldn’t overcome Maclaine and her overdue status.
@@calebcostigan2561 yes, it was different back then as two co-leads of the same gender had no problem to campaign in the same category. Doesn't happen anymore today
JuIie Waters shouId have won. Her performance as Rita was briIIiant.
Wow! Jennifer Jones had the rights? How different that film would be.
I prefer Deborah Winger in terms of endearment. Maclaine has the flashier role but without Winger being so good the heart of the film collapses.
When an actor's name is misspelled, it means it's all over. Like a comet that soared, fizzled out.
I love DW as an actress, but she seems like a borderline...
Shirley should have won for Sweet Charity, for my money the best performance by an actress in a musical, EVER!
But the movie was not a success, and she wasn't even nominated.
The English magazine " Films & Filming" got it right and selected her performance as the best of the year.
Meryl Streep is my choice that year
Idiot
Starting off as Wonder Woman, Winger maybe should've stayed a little humble!
21:00-23:00 you always get political lol
Debra Winger was notoriously addicted to cocaine in the late 70s-mid 80s. Just listen to Jim Brooks on the commentary track of “Terms...” He all but names her and is open about how “loaded” he felt she was in several scenes. Her confronting Flap with his first infidelity jumps out in my mind.
This is the reason why she was labeled difficult as early as Wonder Woman.
I do like this channel though and I appreciate all your time and effort put in to cover these races.
Thank you! Not sure if I'm really political, I just try to cover all angles
@@FritzandtheOscars sure. I don’t doubt her being a woman factored into this. A lot of men were doing blow back then and while labeled difficult as well it’s not the first thing they were always asked about in interviews.
NOBODY once mentions Larry McMurtry the author of the novel who CREATED the story and all that happens who created the characters as we know them in the movie. This is not a movie 'inspired' by a novel The is a movie OF the novel as much as Lonesome Dove was. . He died three years ago
oscars a bullshit prize a comercial chance for companys
Debra Winger should have had more respect for her veteran actress. Shirley MacLaine was acting when Debra Winger was still wetting in her diapers. Shirley MacLaine an oscar well deserved. Shirley MacLaine should have got an Oscar for The Apartment as well.
Great actress, horrible mother...she is a Mommie Dearest, but with major neglect not physical abuse.
Betty White said she purposely planned not to have any children because being in show business and motherhood didn't mix. Maybe she was on to something.
Debra winger gave a better performance than MaClaine.
WRONG!!
both were great but i too favored Winger
