- Another chip-off data recovery - this time it's a smashed Samsung Galaxy S3 that fell out of a car and was run over. Showing how to pre-heat the PCB, take the chip-off with hot air, and clean it with a flat iron, flux and alcohol. Then using flexible and affordable fixtures from KZT Socket to read the eMMC memory chip, directly show where to extract the photos, contacts and text messages from the Android file directory, using WinHex and SQLiteBrowser.

Hi, does a particular brand/model or Android version not allow data recovery? I noticed in a comment you said that a OnePlus 3 with Android 6 is encrypted and thus not recoverable unless the logic board is repaired.

i see you use a specie of heat gun, is that a regular heat gun like the one from Harbour Freight at $14?

Will this technique work if the phone had an SD card adopted as internal storage? In such case the SD card would be encrypted but would the internal eMMC chop also be encrypted?

2) The same phone model is used to transplant the victim phone's CPU +DDR and eMMC. You buy a new phone same model.

O got a MyPhone My72DTV (you could maybe search about that phone) and it broke in around 2019 or 2018 and it looks like the LCD was the only damage on it and i want to see if is there any remnants on its internal storage like videos or pictures. Do you other ways to access the motherboard without removing the whole chip itself like slapping its battery in and USB cable then connecting it to a computer?

hello apologises if i use wrong terminology but when a kzt reader says its suitable for BGA153/169/162/186/221 data recovery does this info have to be on the chip. I have one from samsung ace - i can read "broadcom" and various other numbers but nothing remotely like BGA153/169/162/186/221 . many thanks peter

I'd like to start by thanking you. Well done. But I'm a little confused. I have two s3's, one s4 and an LG G Flex 2. I'm new to SMDs so these are for learning. All of these have eMMC BGA153Ball memory chips and with my limited understanding would use the eMCP153 socket, not the eMCP221 you mentioned. New question. Even thou I have 4 BGA153 chips, they have different model numbers. Having trouble finding pinouts so, do different models use different pinouts and voltages?
You only need the eMMC153 socket reader. It will work on all the BGA chips, even with different model numbers.

the the other phone has the same controller and such. if all the chips line up then it shouldnt be an issue. with newer phones you get into encryption issues where only the original CPU/mainboard can decrypt the data on the memory chip, such as with new apple phones.
I would feel like they have enough fail safes in there to have to have the original chips/hardware to function... so yo ucant swap out new components and stuff

Yes, it should be possible (as long as full disk encryption option was not forced with the upgrade). The default is no encryption when upgrading from Android 5.1.

mad these parts can take these temperatures, did my first semi succesfull chip off today, no bed to preheat but preheated it of a sort, plenty flux, 360 directly on the chip and popped off couple of mins later

The OnePlus 3 was release with Android 6.0, so chip-off is not an option because the phone is encrypted. The logic board must be fixed to get it working again.

You will need a program that can read Ext4 Linux file format. R-Studio is a good alternative.

Yes it should, so as long it has an eMMC chip. It came with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).

@@purp3981 Android 6.0 and above is encrypted by default when installed on the phone from the factory. A phone that came with Android 5.1 or lower version is not encrypted by default, even if upgraded to Android 6 or 7 later.

what is highest temperature to remove the chip? just to avoid damage
Keep heat on the chip less than 380C (better less than 360C). I also recommend a preheater underneath the board to bring it up to temperature.

No - After the S6 family, Samsung installs Android OS 6.0 (or higher) at the factory. The user data is encrypted by default. Chip-off is not an option. There's no way to decrypt the data outside the phone.

The Galaxy J5 2016 was released with Android 6.0 which has an encrypted user partition. Even if we were to do a chip-off, there is no known method to decrypt these files outside the phone. The only solution is to troubleshoot the board to try and get it to work as a phone again.

Yes .. Chip-off data recovery bypasses any password set on the device.
can you transfer that whole unit to a phone of the same model?
No - we have access to all the folders and files but its not transferable in whole to another phone. Some items (photos, contacts) can be moved individually. Certain apps too like whatsapp have a built-in back up.

Yes - this phone came with Android 4 (Kit Kat) so its contents are not encrypted. It would be a good candidate for a chip-off data recovery.

My samsung s3 emmc is crashed, can you able to recover data?
If the emmc has crashed, and no data can be read from it, there is no path to data recovery.

No data recovery is not possible if eMMC chip is damaged. I think you must know that!

It is not necessary to reball the chip using an eMMC socket reader. I have only had to use reballing for UFS chips from Galaxy S6 with DediProg fixture.
