As a kid I would watch the 85 USGP over and over and only remember the highlight of Bailey crashing on the downhill. It was great to see this and I'm blown by how fast a young Ricky Johnson was compared to Glover and Bailey. Team Yamaha riders earned everything they got being up against works Hondas on the YZ 490.
I forgot how stylish Glover was; he and Bailey looked so trick in that white JT gear, especially Bailey with those white boots👍. And David’s speed was amazing, it’s even obvious on video. Interesting race; Bailey and Omara dominating moto 1, the teammates and training buddies on those trick works Honda 500’s; Glover and Johnson dominating moto 2, teammates and training buddies, locals, on their archaic aircooled Yamaha’s. If Bailey wouldn’t have broken his bike in moto 1 and crashed going super sonic speed in moto 2, he would’ve smoked every one👍. The clear distinction in riding styles between Malherbe (representing the Euros) and Glover, Bailey, O’Mara, Johnson (US).... Euros-elbows down, riding on the seat; Americans-crouched, attack position, elbows up, standing up. It was a truly pivotal moment in the sport. The best era of the sport in my opinion.
Robert Rishel you can pick out every rider back then from their gear they wore. Agree Bailey just flat out flying! Especially Moto 2. But Carlsbad had a way of reaching up and grabbing you if you made a bad line choice.
Those Honda were so advanced too all other bikes. Yet Glover beat Bailey. Honda poured $$$ millions into there budgets. Those bikes would be competitive today 1/3 century Later.
I can’t believe it’s been 40 years. I saw this race live right after graduating high school in 84. I saw every race live from 1980 to 1986. A bit of the old track still sits there buried below an industrial park.

Magoo's win was '82. I was there with my 3 brothers at the bottom of the freeway at the left turn before going up again. I had flown in from Atlanta for the race and we had a big cooler and a massive American flag. In the 2nd moto, Chandler dropped his bike in front of us and had a hard time getting it started. But of course he did, and motored on for the overall. Malherbe broke his leg. Lacky had a black Arai helmet with flames. It was indeed epic. If memory serves, Glover won the 250 support race (a National?). Anyway, the glory days of motocross and I am thankful that I was there to see it.

Slightly behind them were the 125s. Way back were the open class bikes which were apparently just too powerful to fit the track well. After I switched from my 1981 YZ 465 to a Honda 250 in the Vet class, I went from getting lapped to being in the top three if I didn't crash out.
After the European bike companies gave up back then, Honda has generally been the company with the most money to spend on motocross. They pay racers the most, so it is where the best want to go to cash in on their talents. The reason Broc Glover and Rick Johnson typically did well at Carlsbad is it was their "home" track, not far from El Cajon.
It looked like both riders stepped down their paces. Glover would win overall with a second place also. That's probably why David made the mental mistake and crashed.

Me llamó la atención, asi que observando con calma y deteniendo el video se aprecia normal, sobre todo cuando la suspención comprime totalmente el flexible de freno se ve muy por encima del manillar con movimientos violentos, ayudado tambien por la dureza del terreno. Pero la cañería yo la veo en su lugar. Saludos!!🖐🙂 It caught my attention, so looking calmly and stopping the video it looks normal, especially when the suspension fully compresses the brake hose, it is seen well above the handlebar with violent movements, also helped by the hardness of the terrain. But I see the pipe instead. Cheers

The cool thing about Carlsbad is that the track never really changed and as an amateur, we could race the exact same track as these guys all year round.
I raced there as a weekend amateur and it was a real sense of pride that we got to run the same track as the world champions.
I love how spectators lined the edge of the track, now were 15 feet away behind a chain link fence.
I went there as a kid in high school. I just remember a huge crowd and it being hotter than hell every year.

I love watching the 500 Grand pre from 84 to 93.But what I love more than watching guys try to ride 500’S is smoking them on a 125.😎🇺🇸🏁🥇👀😍
Johnny O did one better by beating 2 500 World Champs on their works 500's all while on a production 125. The bike wasn't even his.

Oddly enough I raced from 85-90 then broke my femur. When I was healed up I started boxing for almost 20 years
