I am sitting here in 2023 watching this race and it is every bit as exciting as it would be live. At 62 years old l can only dream of riding one of my XT500's down a desert road 1/4 as good as these guys.
My first bike as an adult was a road registered 1981 TT350. I remember the local shop owner saying to me if you can master riding a motorcross bike on the road with knobby tyres, you'll be able to ride anything. 42 yrs later I'm still upright and still enjoying riding. I recently spied a partly dismantled TT350 in a neighbours garage and when I mentioned my early history with one he said 'if you can push it home you can have it!' I don't think I have ever moved so fast to get my gym shoes on and push a bike up a hill and into my garage. I have spent two years collecting NOS parts for it, the rebuild will start soon. I just have to remind myself it's a 20 yr old mind in a 60 yr old body when I get it on the road. 😅👍
@@jakk222rem I have several to restore, but this is the only vintage mx bike I have (must be over 30 yrs old to qualify). It's been said 'that I have a good head for radio' so I want to teach myself to do video edits and subtitles first. At the moment I am building a new workshop/ultimate man cave, by the time it's finished I hope my video skills are up to date. I have a brace of early (proper) Suzuki Katana's to do as well. Here's to hoping that I live long enough to get it all done. 😉👍
The Wide World of Sports gave me my introduction to motorcycle racing. I was glued to the screen when this stuff came on. They played some interesting stuff between football and baseball seasons back in the seventies.
We did a race like this in my home town one year. Was so freakin awesome. Just wanted to race it and try it , ended up taking home 250 and open class overall wins 😝👌. Need more racing like this. Real racing on real bikes
Superbikers...introduced me to a guy who became one of my heroes, Danny 'Magoo' Chandler! Was going to see him, we exchanged emails, but sadly Danny died before i got to visit him...much missed!
He was an awesome dude! My dad thought he was great and that's how he became a hero of mine. I met him a few times at Washougal. The first time was in 92 I think. I was about 10 and was wearing my first new AXO jersey it my name and number airbrushed in the back. I was wearing it while walking around the day before my day to race during amateur days so that's what I had for him to sign. I still have it and I didn't race in it or anything even though I really thought it was something special then. The autograph and meeting him that first time was more special.
They should bring this race back! Very exciting and high speed racing. I remember watching this when it aired. I watched all the ABC wide world of sports motorcycle races from the 70's through the 80's.
After having held this event for a couple of years, the manufactures responded with the first dual sport bikes, like the 1982 Honda FT500 Ascot, and the 1982 Suzuki SP500.
I love that the announcer actually calls him Danny “magoo” chandler 16:54 thank you for putting this up I’ve only heard the tales and story’s of watching these and now have actually watched one my self thank you
you probably have watched the special on Danny Chandler. He spoke with heartbreaking regret for cheating on his wife and not being able to get a handle on his drinking. He died a Christian man with faults we all have and carry thru life.
I completely forgot about this style racing. That's awesome to see my old former champions from motorcross ward johnson glover out there on the track."BADASS"!
Great share - thanks for posting. I never knew of this form of racing. I guess the remake of this was Super Moto but in reality both are very different.
Glad this showed up in my feed. Wonder if it has anything to do with my phone spying on me after listening to the podcast yesterday with Ping interviewing Steve Wise about the superbikers, lol. I have never searched nor watched a super biker video since these were on TV in the 80s.
Great race you could see the draft. Wasn't mentioned during broadcast. Little was known about it back then. And soon after it would play a key role on most tracks for all racing.
I still have the full page photo framed from Motocross Action magazine when he's taking the checkerd and laying it over doing a salute. Probably around 83 or 84. Best photo ever.
He was one of my heroes as a kid. Met him a few times at our local national at Washougal. The first time I met him I was wearing a brand new AXO jersey that had my name and number airbrushed on it back when that was the thing. I hadn't even raced in it yet but I got his autograph, and only his, on that jersey and never wore it again. It's still carefully tucked away as one of my treasures. That must've been around '92 or so.
@@GrocMax Right. The lap before was even closer. He was actually touching Wise with his left elbow and his right was over the guardrail @ 100 mph. Just nuts, but that's the way he rode.
While Sam Posey was standing there lying about how 'stock' these bikes were, I keep hearing Uncle Bobby (Unser) saying in the background, "Sam, you really think those things are stock? You, son, are an idiot!!!!" Sam and Bobby were a great motorsports announcing duo. Everybody wondered if Sam actually knew which was the shiny side and rubber side of a car, and Bobby (RIP) had NO filter.
A interesting made for TV type race sponsored by ABCTV. The French developed a spin-off called SuperMoto but it was a bit more asphalt biased. They also use 17” sized f&r street tires compared to the dirt track spec 19” tires front and rear. I prefer this original type of race with more dirt bias. I’d love to see a version of Superbikers held at Glen Helen.
I never thought Ricky lived up to the whole "bad boy" marketing they did for him. His interview here was a good example of why "arrogant excuse maker" would've been more fitting.
