This is a pretty common technique in classic engineering, and I mean Old school engineering design. Break a complex shape into cubes and then as if it were clay or foam you’re gonna mould and shave that cube down into the shape you need. The most important thing is the isometric angle though, being able to do it freehand like this takes a fair bit of practice and as you’ll see here, you need to learn when to use your wrist, shoulder and elbow as pivots to get good long straight lines. But in essence you can see how they do it, certain shapes get broken into cubes or spheres for reference and that helps with perspective and sizing. Guaranteed it’s faster than CAD IF you get time and experience with it, but when I left college and went to uni I learned I used cad way more and now I can CAD model something way better and faster than I can draw something like this accurately, so it’s entirely dependant on what and how long you practice on
@pandemoniumcrow Yes, I get the concept. I even bought all the pens with different shades of gray and sketching paper a while back. I spent a bit of time trying to get good and fast at it. It was a disaster. It was either fast, or it was good, but never both. So I went back to drawing things up in a CAD software, it was as slow as the "good" drawing, but I could still use the model for manufacturing purposes when I was done. Everything is practice, but I don't know if the curves will ever cross for me, between time invested in getting real good at it, VS time saved once I am good at it. Drawing was never one of my natural strong point, fine motor skills in general.
