ive got the RG35XX SP last week and to be completely honest, I've been absolutely obsessed with it. I love the GBA SP form factor and the DMG color scheme looks incredibly cute. GBA games look great on it obviously. But I've been loving GBC, SNES, and PSX games as well. Knulli has similar problems with it's global settings where i had to figure out why some of my retroarch settings weren't saving until i figured out i had disable certain global settings. muOS is definitely a lot better when it comes to agency but i just love the premium feel of a good Emulation Station theme and auto scraping meta data is way too convenient for me to pass on Knulli.
Im exactly the same. I love the SP form factor, but I've found myself going to my rg35xx+ more lately ONLY for the D-Pad. I play a lot of Castlevania SotN, which has fighting game inputs for a lot of good moves. The SP just doesn't do well with diagnals and quick inputs because it's so slim. It's still awesome for everything else, tho! Im getting the 28xx because it's just a smaller xx+. The D-Pad seems to be the same
This is me buying repros to flash the roms I do want on them OVER just buying something like an everdrive mini. Same with my massive steam library, in that I don't want to look at a list of all the games I want to play. I want to just pick out a game or two to pack into my carrying case and just play that for the day. I feel like forcing myself into a limited selection helps me actually play stuff.

Hi there! For fixing the output on a monitor, as Russ says, you have to make a custom ratio to fit the 3by4. (Had something to do that it's working with a turned screen, but don't ask me 😅). Regards ❤
Russ' advice was for the regular firmware flipping to portrait mode on a modern screen. That issue doesn't even exist with cfw! Thanks for trying though 🩷 Connecting to my CRT was mostly for giggles so I'm not too upset haha

Knulli vs muOS, both are awesome CFW, I have a rg35xx plus and H, H one I use knulli and have all my library, on the plus I have muOS and only keep few bangers and works amazing since boot time is super fast and if you have a small library muOS does a good job can recommend both of them over stock OS
Hey Cool Unc: can you link to the other source you mentioned where Russ talked about the best integer scaling options? I copied your settings for the GBA, and was overall pleased with the results. I've been trying to Google the original source to find other scaling options, but so far not having much luck. Thanks for any info!
I definitely agree with you on the buttons, and I "am" a dude with large hands, lol. I tried MuOS and didn't really like it, so I'm on stock. I kept the MuOS card around though to put in anytime I want to play Vectrex, which the stock doesn't have. Mostly I've been playing Mario Tennis and Shotgun Mario on N64 as well as old 80's arcade games on the three arcade choices. 😎
I'm a bit in between camps myself... it depends really if it's something I have nostalgia for. Most of my classic consoles and computers are ones I got cheap broken and fixed myself, and I like to mod them, but I don't like to mod them "too far", like for example, the OG Xbox, I have TSOPed, but I only use it to play OG Xbox on, I don't use it for emulators, of the same for the PSP, and most other consoles like that. I never had a SNES, but I got the Classic Mini to enjoy the games but not get into the hardware rabbit hole. The N64 is also something I have no nostalgia for, but I got gifted a broken one with games, so I have that fixed. Generally I don't spend a lot on consoles or games, I get the games I like, and the others on something like an Everdrive or on the internal storage, but console specific. Full emulator consoles I find they have a place, but I like to split them up too. For example, I have the Anbernic RG Arc-D, but I use it only for Mega Drive and Saturn games on the go. If I want to get an emulator for something else, I would go for a handheld that has a similar pad layout to what I want to emulate. I have an issue with choice saturation, and when I have too many things to choose from on a single device, my mind kind of blocks up and I can't decide, and end up not playing at all, which is why I try and divide it up this way too. One system I am very much enjoying is the Evercade platform, as even though it has a large choice of classic games, it's split up into cartridges, which makes the choosing process go in stages and more manageable for me. The main issue I have with all this is space; I live in a small studio apartment, and I've had to start hanging systems on the wall in the hallway even because of lack of space!! I just hang it up but can easily take it down when I want to use it, and I do this especially with old 80's and 90's microcomputers like the Commodores and the Ataris. I fond these reviews handy because sometimes I'm in the market for a new emulator handheld to fill a gap, and I can see what is a good fit without risking the money and finding I don't like it. So thank you for reviewing these consoles.
Small apartment problems are so real - I see people in big houses in middle America with full arcades and I'm just like....that's the size of my whole home 💀
@@yourcoolunclemarisa NTSC was 720x480 but actual 4:3 would be 720x540 if the pixels were square. Maybe CRT lines are displaying it in some weird way we've all forgotten about 😅
I got the Anbernic RG28XX in orange, because it kinda looks like a digivice for Agumon. Anyways... I use the RG28 with MinUI instead of my Miyoo Mini, because it's very slick and straight to the point, making it perfect as my EDC handheld on the go. OnionOS is still far more superior, but MinUI is more than enough for me and I prefer horizontal handhelds over vertical ones. The only thing I wish for in MinUI or all the other OS (other than OnionOS), is the Activity Tracker App. To me, it's pretty cool to see how many hours it took me to beat a game. I've seen Reddit posts stating that you can find the playtime in MinUI, RetroArch, MuOS etc., but not really how. Couldn't find it so far, but maybe I will some day.
I feel like I just got my Miyoo but this new anbernic is calling my name. I have an anbernic RG350m and its my favorite one I own. At this point I'm not sure if collecting these handhelds is a hobby or a problem lol
i had the RG35XX H in a drawer forgotton cuz I've had issues with Knulli, you made me give it a chance and what do you know, it had an update recently, my JetSetRadio save file is thanking you
Will you be reviewing the Miyoo A30 though? A lot of people have been saying its soo much better now after the initial reviews weren't great. Especially with Spruce installed
Honestly thinking of picking up this unit in this exact color, to be honest. I kinda need it for testing portmaster stuff and this is the cheapest model for that new anbernic chipset. Plus I'm a sucker for the gameboy micro. It's either this one or the SP for me. My only concern are those shoulder buttons on the 28xx...
The shoulder buttons are ok. I wouldn't say they're bad despite not being amazing. However, it does not have its CPU and Battery heating up together like the SP so it's a safer choice hahaha.
Interesting what you said about the saturation thing and how you sometimes turn it down on other stuff. Is that just for gaming or even for watching UA-cam and stuff?
Good question - I do prefer natural colors on modern monitors, such as using 'standard' instead of 'vivid' on my OLED switch, but I don't desaturate things to the extend I would for retro gaming.
For this guy I am not too picky and use the built in shaders. I like the crt-pi often for the home consoles. But for the Miyoo Mini Plus, I love the perfect 240p CRT filters which I have linked in the description of the video I did on that. You can probably also just Google that phrase and find them on GitHub!
I would cross-check the specs. I can only recommend using the packed-in charging cable since Anbernic has set a precedent of its handhelds catching fire.
I would guess that your adapter advertises 1440x900 or 1280x800 to the hdmi edid. This 16:10 input is then passed as 480i to the TV. The crt TV takes the 480i output and simply stretches that. Therefore retroarch has no idea this is not a 16:10 monitor and puts the black bars to "correctly" display 4:3.
i was fixating on buying a vita and throwing cwf on it for some emulation fun. then chatgpt talked me out of it "you already have a mobile phone which can do all that dude" and she was right. so now instead im fixating on the gamesir x2s gamepad for mobile, its only 50 euro so its obviously a necessary and responsible purchase. right uncle?
i emulate unless i have a good reason not to. with the gameboy advance and 3DS, i want to play with friends so i use real hardware.. with everything else I just emulate (for now at least)
The Anbernic K101+ is my favorite handheld of all time (so far, I’ve only been playing on one for .. oh crap 9 years 😅) it’s a fantastic GBA clone with a few extra features ❤ Check it out sometime, if you get the chance. It’s really a Solid build.
First I'm hearing of that but that's really cool that it plays real carts. I'd love to see someone develop an analogue-pocket type GBA with similar vibes. Thank you for sharing!
First time watching. I'm just curious I don't care what your gender is, what is with the whole Uncle thing? Or is it just like an inside joke. I really love your review ❤️
Thanks for watching! Yeah, it's just a funny username. Inspired by the character small uncle and also inadvertently a nod to "my uncle who works at Nintendo told me...."
honestly the lame shell colours are what stop me from getting into retro emu handhelds :I This anbernic is def better- I agree the white and lilac is def the best, buuuut unfortunately not the kind of colours i'd want in a handheld. Makes me wish the miyoo mini + had better colours =3=. I don't want to have to customize something to get some decent choices. I never seem to win on that front oof.
various_ka is a button maker in japan and I'll never stop raving about him. His buttons transform these boring devices so much. My MM+ actually looks cute because of him ;_; Honestly though, whatever shift happened (outside of Nintendo) where everyone decided consoles should be marketed to Serious Adults in Serious Adult Colors was terrible.
You should really try muOS. It starts up in about 4 seconds, and is very customizable. You can even change the boot up screen so you don't have to look at a goofy load bar for 50 seconds. Seriously that boot time is atrocious. You can save per game, per core, or global settings without fuss.. I mean.. why on gods earth would you want a slow, bulky resource hog OS like that?
@@yourcoolunclemarisa I don't really have any of these dedicated emulation handhelds yet though, (Yet), I do it on the things I alerady had, like, my 3DS, my Vita, my Wii, my laptop... But I want one of those... Or three... I just can't justify it at the moment >w>';

You should get custom blue buttons for it from various_ka for Ultimate Digivice Vibes >:)
@@yourcoolunclemarisa great idea!
I feel like I just got my Miyoo but this new anbernic is calling my name. I have an anbernic RG350m and its my favorite one I own. At this point I'm not sure if collecting these handhelds is a hobby or a problem lol
Miyoo Mini and this guy are the only ones I have and really like, so uhhh IDK if that helps hahaha. At least they're affordable!
i had the RG35XX H in a drawer forgotton cuz I've had issues with Knulli, you made me give it a chance and what do you know, it had an update recently, my JetSetRadio save file is thanking you
Will you be reviewing the Miyoo A30 though? A lot of people have been saying its soo much better now after the initial reviews weren't great. Especially with Spruce installed
What's the name of the theme you're using? :3
Im looking forwarding to getting my powkiddy v10, another small cute device :)
It looks very edible.
Bubble Ghost ❤
A delightful discovery for me!
which shaders do u prefer?
cant find them in the description (as u told :))
@@yourcoolunclemarisa thx! but hey...am i blind? theres no link in your description about shaders...take a look :)

@@yourcoolunclemarisa nice , big thx!
Will this charge with a standard USB-C cable and standard USB-C charging brick?
I would cross-check the specs. I can only recommend using the packed-in charging cable since Anbernic has set a precedent of its handhelds catching fire.
Stuttering in Genesis is crazy. I thought every handheld in the world could nail it
Can you load your own emulators on these devices?
I would guess that your adapter advertises 1440x900 or 1280x800 to the hdmi edid. This 16:10 input is then passed as 480i to the TV. The crt TV takes the 480i output and simply stretches that. Therefore retroarch has no idea this is not a 16:10 monitor and puts the black bars to "correctly" display 4:3.
This is very plausible! I appreciate you.
i was fixating on buying a vita and throwing cwf on it for some emulation fun. then chatgpt talked me out of it "you already have a mobile phone which can do all that dude" and she was right. so now instead im fixating on the gamesir x2s gamepad for mobile, its only 50 euro so its obviously a necessary and responsible purchase.
right uncle?
i emulate unless i have a good reason not to. with the gameboy advance and 3DS, i want to play with friends so i use real hardware.. with everything else I just emulate (for now at least)
Nicole the Enlightened :')
I do both methods for gaming but mostly software emulation rather than FPGA.
Love the CRT but I wouldnt recommend ahooking it up to a device like this because it cant actually output 240p
Guys, I bought a used 28xx, but it has no user guide. I can't find one anywhere on the internet.
U can actually change the settings on a per emulator bssis. Not just per gsme
Yep! All the options are in the override section of retroarch (for anyone else reading, I know you know ;) )
some game ps1 can't play on RG28xx such as final fantasy 8, resident evil 2 :(((
Hm so I just tested ff8 and it was playing fine for me. What's happening for you?
@@yourcoolunclemarisa how???, so what's firmware you use?
Knulli, like in the video.
The Anbernic K101+ is my favorite handheld of all time (so far, I’ve only been playing on one for .. oh crap 9 years 😅) it’s a fantastic GBA clone with a few extra features ❤
Check it out sometime, if you get the chance. It’s really a Solid build.
First I'm hearing of that but that's really cool that it plays real carts. I'd love to see someone develop an analogue-pocket type GBA with similar vibes. Thank you for sharing!
thanks unc
Pico-8 too?
There's instructions for it on knulli's wiki so yes :) I have yet to try myself though.
I watched this, I'm a responsible person.
I thought the RG28XX didn't have bluetooth support?
It's not built in, no. It does have compatibility with dongles for wi-fi and bt / 2.4ghz :0)
It'd have been much nicer if it was built in though.
@@yourcoolunclemarisa ohhh that makes sense now I gotta go get some dongles for my 28XX
does it have a sleep function?
Yes it does.
@@yourcoolunclemarisa thanks cool uncle.
Your look cute with those glasses❤
Loll thanks, the black screen reflection was like a jump scare when I was editing.
@@yourcoolunclemarisa wear it more often it really does look cute
64DS was a good looking game, but the controls are extremely bad. I hope for a remastered version since then.
Wasn't it on the Nintendo switch triple pack or am I making that up
@@yourcoolunclemarisa No, only the normal N64 Version. 64DS was a complete remake with better graphics and more content.
@@Buchstabenkrahn ohh what a weird decision! I only played sunshine and galaxy off the collection so I had no idea
@@yourcoolunclemarisa Only the same version as on NSO. ua-cam.com/video/canhElHAAJg/v-deo.html
honestly the lame shell colours are what stop me from getting into retro emu handhelds :I This anbernic is def better- I agree the white and lilac is def the best, buuuut unfortunately not the kind of colours i'd want in a handheld.
I'm not a dude with giant hands - Marissa
With overrides btw. That's what i use heheheh
i so relate to the small buttons thing. reviewers say something is too small but when i get it, its the perfect size. perks of being a woman :D
Yess - I wish other reviewers would also frame it as 'too small for me' instead of stating it as fact. People have different bodies!
I do love how cute of a form factor it is, despite having large man hands :(.
Gotta get those tiny hands that pop on your fingers hehe
lol that would be so funny.
I do both
I do both your parents. Owned.
Emulation or real hardware? I do both! Both is good.
The One Hot Tip Wallets Hate!
@@yourcoolunclemarisa I don't really have any of these dedicated emulation handhelds yet though, (Yet), I do it on the things I alerady had, like, my 3DS, my Vita, my Wii, my laptop... But I want one of those... Or three... I just can't justify it at the moment >w>';
😊
I love videos like this but it causes me to want to buy. 😫
Take a moment! See what you have that needs some love. That usually helps me put new purchases on pause 🥲
@@yourcoolunclemarisa last thing I bought that I was really excited for was the PowKiddy RGB30, which I have yet to set up. Meanwhile these things come out SOOOOO fast, and they seem to get better and better. 😅
@@MRCAB I got the rgb30 and ended up returning it because it felt so cheap in my hands 🥲 But seriously, they need to slow down! At least they're not insanely expensive like ayaneo lol
@@yourcoolunclemarisa right? I think that’s what drew me in to the RGB30, it was very inexpensive and the reviews were great. Also that screen. I do agree, it def feels cheap. I’m gonna try to get it set up soon.
I'm a non binary retro gamer, I play both real hardware and emulators. I love neogeo but it is kind of expensive, I both play neogeo's ports on PS2 or emulators.
Patience because of a boot time? Come on, I use a laptop with 2GB ram, patience is my middle name
