    That is Pensacola Dam on the Neosho River. It forms Grand Lake `O Cherokees in northeast Oklahoma. It is the largest man made lake in Oklahoma. OK-28 runs over the top of the dam, and there are two flood control spillways just to the east of the dam. These two spillways flow back into the main channel of the Neosho River on the south side of the dam. I know that town well. I live up the lake and have been in Disney many times.

    What you wouldn’t know by looking at this town is that the lake being held by that old dam is one of the most prestigious lakes in the country. Pensacola Dam and Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees. Multi million dollar lake front properties, huge yachts and yacht clubs. 1300 miles of shoreline. My family used to eat burgers and ice cream at that old ice cream stand in the 80s! It may not look like much now but from April through October Disney, OK is a happenin' place. Grand Lake is a massive reservoir, paradise for any kind of water sports. It's very lush and green, trees grow down to the waterline. My parents had a lake home there for many years. And yes, when they open those flood gates in the spring where you were standing it's a raging torrent of water. I could tell stories for hours about that lake. They have a riverboat that runs tours on the lake including night cruises. It used to be popular with nurses from a nearby mental hospital, we'd do the night cruise with those nurses and rarely went home alone. Well, I'll stop there and just say thank you very much Adam for taking me back to some very fond memories.

    It seems like it's more busy in summertime. The town has an amphitheater there that has a production every year. I remember going to see it when I was in middle school.
    I appreciate that you aren't judgmental on towns that have "less economy" than others, instead you see the fun and creativity in them. That's one reason I always enjoy watching your channel.
    If you're up around Grove you might enjoy Harbor Village. I can't say what's there now, but when I was a kid my mom took us several times and it was neat. And next time you're in OK you should head over to Claremore and see the museums there and it's got a nice little downtown area that has music playing all day which I really wish our downtown would copy! :)

    If they had driven a little further down the road they would have been in Tiajuana, OK. . About fifty years ago Disney was a nice little town to get your bait before going to Little Blue. On the other side of the dam we used to stop in at Doc's Bait Shop. Sad to see it that way, but I bet there are still a lot of good people there.

    • @rcsutter
      @rcsutter 4 роки тому +1

      I remember all that. Had some great times at LIttle Blue. I was friends with the man who worked at Doc's, I can't remember his name now but he always had the lowdown on what was going on in the area, it was always my go-to bait shop. I remember one time when the river below the dam was really flooded down towards Strang, and he told me about "cow patty catfish'. The flooded cow pastures were full of catfish feeding on the worms under the cow patties. The water was only a few feet deep and you could see channel cat tails sticking out of the water rooting for worms. All you had to do was put on some hip boots, put a nightcrawler on a hook under a bobber set about 1 foot deep and they would slam it. It was like bonefish on the flats in the Bahamas. We slayed 'em for about a week that way.

    Awesome vlog, don't recall seeing a merry-go-round like that since the 70s, definitely first time I've seen a live bait vending machine. I did notice it's Chezzies and not Cheezies. Wish I could do that stuff all the time.

    I just watched a 20 minute video about Disney Oklahoma with a big smile on my face. Incorporated in 1959, definitely stole the name 👍

    Oh wow! At the beginning you are on the highway I took all the time from my home in Tulsa to my grandparents lake house near Langley on Grand Lake (Langley is right across the dam from Disney). What a surprise to see you start the video at the Crooked Little House. Sad to see it closed. Used to sell peanut brittle and the like there back in they day. Right off I-44, west of Adair. Looks like Luther's (classic hole in the wall, take-away diner, in Adair) has closed, too! In Langley, just across from Disney, Frosty and Edna's (local diner) has gone to different management and is called Ailey's, I just read online. Used to be a cool arcade and restaurant called PJ's in Disney, too! Pretty sure that was the building by the rusty sign. Guess it's gone now, too. How sad. All my childhood haunts with my grandparents are going by the wayside. At least Pistol Pat's is still open. My grandpa, my siblings and I would sometimes walk around on the rocks below the dam. Disney and the lake towns are mostly summertime places, which is why Pistol Pats was closed. I know everything looks run down and in Disney it really is, but if were to drive around the lake just a few miles from there you would see half a million dollar and million dollar plus mansions on the lake front everywhere. The lake extends for many, many miles north from there, as that is the extreme south end of the lake. Go back in the summertime and you will see much more activity, including hundreds (or thousands) of people out on the lake in their boats. Grand Lake is the premier recreational lake in NE Oklahoma.
