I been living In Newark all 35 years of my life. I seen it change over the years. I love the fact that now more people of all walks of life is deciding to move here in this great city. But just a little secret. If you want to move here in the city and stay away from downtown go to Forrest hill section and move into one of the towers. The rent is a little steep but you can get a beautiful view of New York City if you get an east facing apartment. And a west facing apartment you will get a orange mountain view. And you are not too far from Branch brook park highways 280 and 21. 15 minutes from Manhattan.
Bernard, I lived in Newark from 1948 thru 1972...in the West Ward. From our apartment on 17th Street, you could see the West Orange Mountains from our back porch. And at night, you could look up and see The Universe outstretched in front of your eyes. I've taken several of the walking tours on UA-cam, particularly for downtown. I can recall all of the pin ball joints, pizza joints and army/navy stores that used to be on Market, between Broad and Mulberry---right across from the Newark News building. West Side Park was great. Tennis courts, basketball courts and the two baseball fields---one on the 16th Avenue side of the park and the other diamond was on 18th Avenue. The hills in the park---two---we would take our sleds and ride down those hills all day when it snowed and S. 17th Street School was closed.
Thank you for this video. So many people see Newark as a dirty poor place. I see it as so much more. It's my home. Although I don't live there anymore, my family still does and I visit all of the time. I am proud to call Newark Home.
I miss Newark. I've been visiting Newark via Google Earth and it has changed so much. So much new architecture! But I see the crime has not gone down much. Different buildings, same day.
I lived for close to forty years in down neck Newark and I felt safe and loved it. I had many friends and enjoyed life there. However, it has now become something that I do not recognize and since 2005 I have lived in Florida and althought I do miss it, no longer see it for what it was. They tore down the projects, but there is still crime and drugs abound. Last week there was a drive by shooting where an off duty police officer lost his life. It looks more like the worst part of LA now.
@quetnique I agree with you...When even I'm a Floridian I'm a Latin american as well...Newark is so pretty and has -as the author of this video says- so much history to tell, we - people living in this city- have made it what it is...our fathers left us a wonderful city..It is our duty to preserve it and make it better day after day. We have to look back and see how our fathers lived and what did they do to make this city so glorious...what do you think?
ME TOO I'M STILL HERE! I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN NEWARK, NEW JERSEY!
