It is one of the greatest tragedies in music that the Tony Martin era of Black Sabbath is so unknown and overlooked. Martin should be worshiped as a legend alongside Ozzy and Dio, but almost nobody's even heard of him. It pisses me off when people say "Ozzy IS Sabbath!" Ozzy helped write maybe two songs out of eight albums. I love him, but there's more to Sabbath than Ozzy. Every member brought something to the music. Martin is just as good a singer, if not better in some ways, than Dio.
I think, Tony Martin is a fantastic singer and the music is still like Black Sabbath. I think its no problem to call them Black Sabbath. Really great performing at this video.
I started listening Black sabbath from "Heaven and Hell" album, then to "paranoid" and "Master of reality"…and recentry I bought "Tyr" album. NOW I am thinking of buying their first album Because this song really chilled my spine!! Long live Black Sabbath!! Long Live Rock'n Roll!!
Every incarnation of Sabbath added something great to their history. I love every singer that came to the table. Ozzy made a different sabbath, so did Gillan. Dio made it the darker sabbath as did Martin. And I personally know Dio didn't have an Ego problem. He loved and respected sabbath. @billgeezeriommi I totally agree. Every version of Sabbath is unique and great. True fans know this.
Iomi and Butler were the creative forces in the band, writing the music and most of the lyrics. Ozzy wrote these lyrics and contributed some lyrics, titles and partial lyrics on many songs. As Iomi put it, Ozzy is "an interpreter, he breathes in music and spits it out", "an incredible translator". Something's missing when others sing early Sabbath. It's Ozzy's ability to take Butler/Iomi songs and make them something more. Like Deniro, adding something to a script and creating a great character
Black Sabbath has ruled and reigned as # 1 heavy metal for 40 years...groups come and go and singers come and go, but Iommi and Sabbath are still here...goooooo Sabbath !!!
I would love to hear Martin covering Dio's tunes, I bet some of those videos are here somewhere. He seems like one of the only guys besides Dio himself who could pull it off
Indeed, there’s a version of Die Young which is technically brilliant if a little too polished. I think that’s why he isn’t liked so much. Whereas Ozzy was all personality and little skill, Martin was the opposite. Dio struck a nice balance
This Song right here Ladies and Gentlemen is THE BIRTH OF HEAVY METAL, PERIOD!! Please dont try and argue/debate it, because there is no argue/debate!!! Thank You!!!
Tony Martin, incredibly underrated but great, I personally like Ozzy but I'm not going to be one to say Sabbath died with him everyone to sing with Sabbath was great in my opinion.
it is Tony's band whether people like it or not. They original would never -EVER- be beaten, but let's be fucking be glad that they keep the greatest music ever written alive. Or would you rather just listen to the new bullshit that they're trying to put up our ears? NO right, so let's enjoy these masterpieces in communion.
@66oderus I agree entirely and would even take the idea a step further - I hope that we see more lineups from Sabbath in the future! Maybe with Jorn Lande, Hughes, Gillan, gee who knows? Kelly Carpenter? Russel Allen would be awesome. Jeff Scott Soto and Mats Levin also would be awesome. Too many awesome singers to imagine.
Did they ever do the songs Eternal Idol, the Kiss of Death, or The Sabbath Stones live? I think these are the best of the Tony Martin era and never heard them live.
give me the original line up or give me death! i saw the origanal line up in 06 i think, out doors, and a thunderstorm hit just as this song started! added to it great!
Black Sabbath is a Legend and we love them. Everyone should listen to them. They are one of our biggest influences. Our band Amaggot Bordir owes alot to them. We just added a new video today on my profile if anyone wants to hear something new and heavily influenced by Sabbath.
I gotta agree with some of the comments. It doesn't matter how much better a singer is (Dio), in terms of range and vocal ability. Early Black Sabbath was all about either terrifying the audience or taking them on a trip to another realm. Ozzy's voice was perfect for that purpose. Yes, he was often too stoned or drunk to remember all the words, but it didn't matter. Ozzy had a way of taking the blood from his own dark, drunken demons and covering a song in it. Nobody can match that.
I can't knock Tony Martin. On The Eternal Idol album he's positively on fire! Some of the other recordings with him have a little weaker material, but the singing itself is top notch. I'll pretty much enjoy any band that Iommi is in whether you call it Black Sabbath or not. Each incarnation has its own merits.
@bookworm1138 Dio without the ego. Ronnie treated Sabbath like they were his backing band early on, altho they did make up somewhat later on for Dehumanizer and the Heaven And Hell tours. Actually some of Iommi's best work can be found during the Martin/Powell years.
Now I can understand why Tony is underrated. He brings some pop thing to this song. But it's not bad, actually is only different. Neither dark as Ozzy, nor evil as Dio or Gillan. But is... Operistic!
@mamasboy815 I'm talking about the band on general, and how you know so much about them if you're not ex-member or member of BS? Only THEM know what really happens, I like all band, if is with Ian Gillian, Tony Martin, Dio, Ozzy or even the blues of Glenn Hughes they gave their contribution with different styles, and I'm surprised how many people don't reconize that.
off course he is a good singer.. his voice is totally particular and has a soul that few other rock singers have.. I really don't give a fuck if he can't reach the high tones of dio, sinatra or pavarotti.. i'm talking about feeling.. and when I listen to Black Sabbath when ozzy sings it gives me chills.. thx
i know,i just dont know whether or not in this video he was the only original. until a couple years later when he asked butler, ward, and dio back.here i dont know if he was the only one in the band or if him and butler or anyone else from the original cast was still in the band.
youre right. ossy's voice is just PERFECT for the dark titone sound. this bloke just over does the vocals. its a brooding song.... not some operatic piece. more is less in this case because the gaps in lyrics are for you to think and imagine what it is painted for you lyrically.
A lot of ''Ozzy-or-nothing'' fans, so? Just shut up! Black Sabbath is beyond Ozzy Osbourne, all the five vocalists did their good work, sometimes people say really stupid thins such ''Sabbath is Ozzy'', on his book he revealed that he was expelled because he lost the Sabbath's show, so where is his love for BS?
Check out the cover band Back Sabbath, they are a Black Sabbath cover band and they are really good, they played this song and it was amazing i watched a video of theirs on their myspace
I think its pretty cool, Tony Martin has a great voice, Dio makes this song sound demonic and Ozzy gives it a nice eary sound, they all do it pretty well and you got to appreciate that.
Yeah ozzy's version is always best Dio sounds scary when he sings it but. Ozzy sounds straight up horrified when singing it. The way its meant to sound haha
obviously i already knew that geezer wasnt there, and bill ward wasnt there, and holy crap did i know that ozzy wasnt with them.although i wasnt aware that vinny appice was drumming on that album,i heard that iommi asked ward to be in the album but i forgot the answer.but, iommi is half of black sabbath.put iommi with ozzy, then it is black sabbath.
@ Punorss Yeah, and based on what I have seen from recent Sabbath stagings (with the "classical" band's members) none of them has lost even an atom of his contribution as compared to the late 60's and early 70's. They all rock and rock and rock... Many people say Ozzy is not a good singer. To my honest opinion, a singer can be called a good one only if he has found his place. And Ozzy has done so 100%. Furthermore, he is much more than a singer - he is a FIGURE - on oth the stage and record.
@TheUnbreakableOtaku He was more THE VOICE of Sabbath, Dio was just too LIGHT for my taste but some of his stuff with Sabbath was great ill give him that
@Myuzishin I must disagree, Dio was a very humble man, hence Heaven and Hell, Iommi knew Dio was the only choice , I really doubt any other former Sabbath singers were ask to join. Mind you this is my opinion, but I'd be willing to wager money on it.
@mynameisjonas45 thats fine, but i dont see the point on expressing negative views on something you know you dont like, you should just not comment here at all
how can you favorite this clip? black sabbath live 1974 with children of the grave.. that´s a favorite sabbath clip!! this is just a good cover band with toni iommi as special guest!
Tony Martin might have a better voice in general, but NOBODY else in the world can pull these songs off like Ozz. Ozzy's voice is best suited for what he does, like this song--Ozzy has a very Haunting loud voice Long Live the Ozzman!
@ThefirstDrInsane2U What planet you been living on duh? Did Idream this or what if I'm not mistaken the original Sabbath line-up played Ozz fest for a couple of years,
ward wasnt in the band at this point thats what i know.the dehumaniser album has ward in it.when dehumaniser was made, tony asked geezer to come back and had to talk ward back and then dio came back and they made dehumanizer.

I completely agree with you.
I think, Tony Martin is a fantastic singer and the music is still like Black Sabbath. I think its no problem to call them Black Sabbath.
Really great performing at this video.
Tony Martin was very under-rated. They put out some great stuff with him.
Hell Yeah!!!! And I Know His Birthday Was On Wednesday So Happy 60th Birthday Tony Martin.
Every incarnation of Sabbath added something great to their history. I love every singer that came to the table. Ozzy made a different sabbath, so did Gillan. Probably the best live show from this lineup that i've seen until now.
Black Sabbath has ruled and reigned as # 1 heavy metal for 40 years...groups come and go and singers come and go, but Iommi and Sabbath are still here...goooooo Sabbath !!!
Man that is a great version. I love martin.
Great music!
Dio struck a nice balance
that dude can sing !!!
This is amazing! Look at Iommi smiling at 5:30 as Powell hits those drums! Martin is FABULOUS on this! As is Iommi ofcourse.
3:41 First time I hear a mistake from Tony Iommi live.
It’s because he sees a horrid front man
Super genial intro live evil místico
anybody whos complaining that ozzy isnt singing isnt a true sabbath fan as long as iommis in the band its black sabbath
This Song right here Ladies and Gentlemen is THE BIRTH OF HEAVY METAL, PERIOD!!
Please dont try and argue/debate it, because there is no argue/debate!!!
Thank You!!!
Oh man i love this video, awesome intro
Awesome. Black Sabbath rules.
Tony Martin, incredibly underrated but great, I personally like Ozzy but I'm not going to be one to say Sabbath died with him everyone to sing with Sabbath was great in my opinion.

tremendous stuff, it really is!
I love the intro to this song. It sounds a lot like Ennio Morricone's scores from those spaghetti westerns.
I love the Cozy Powell rendition of this song
Did they ever do the songs Eternal Idol, the Kiss of Death, or The Sabbath Stones live? I think these are the best of the Tony Martin era and never heard them live.
Weil das einfach meine Zeit gewesen ist, in der ich im Berliner SOUND abgegangen bin!
Jeahhhh!!!!
@robfolcroft I'm thinking of buying that one too, I heard that Special edition of Born again will be on sale around June.
give me the original line up or give me death! i saw the origanal line up in 06 i think, out doors, and a thunderstorm hit just as this song started! added to it great!
Ozzy and Martin is the vocalists that have been longest in sabbath.
Martin is damn good.
the number one sabbath song that created the birth of heavy metal
Black Sabbath is a Legend and we love them. Everyone should listen to them. They are one of our biggest influences. Our band Amaggot Bordir owes alot to them. We just added a new video today on my profile if anyone wants to hear something new and heavily influenced by Sabbath.
martin is a good singer.
happy birthday heavy metal!
2:29, never seen Iommi do that before, haha. He is really into it in this rendition.
I gotta agree with some of the comments. It doesn't matter how much better a singer is (Dio), in terms of range and vocal ability. it's in most sabbath songs. It's part of what makes their sound.
I can't knock Tony Martin. On The Eternal Idol album he's positively on fire! Some of the other recordings with him have a little weaker material, but the singing itself is top notch. you get a fukin goose bump when the bell rings..in the mp3..haha..
@mamasboy815 I'm talking about the band on general, and how you know so much about them if you're not ex-member or member of BS? @tsrtcaster Born Again is a great one too, if you don't have that one.
@SNAL3 tony iommi is black sabbath man
eh look there folks tony martin is also lefthanded
9:17 Lefthanded air guitar rocks
off course he is a good singer.. his voice is totally particular and has a soul that few other rock singers have.. I really don't give a fuck if he can't reach the high tones of dio, sinatra or pavarotti.. i'm talking about feeling.. and when I listen to Black Sabbath when ozzy sings it gives me chills.. thx
HELL YEAH!!
My feels since Toni first did this back in the day.Its just his solo band with the Sabbath name help sell it.
tony martin is the best
Of coz the original version is the best but i prefer martin's performance over dio's in this song
i know,i just dont know whether or not in this video he was the only original. until a couple years later when he asked butler, ward, and dio back.here i dont know if he was the only one in the band or if him and butler or anyone else from the original cast was still in the band.
i love at 2:23 and cranks it up and plays those first few notes!
Of course , without a doubt!!
YEAH!
Yes.
youre right. ossy's voice is just PERFECT for the dark titone sound. this bloke just over does the vocals. its a brooding song.... not some operatic piece. more is less in this case because the gaps in lyrics are for you to think and imagine what it is painted for you lyrically.

@cubby3o5 Ok I think it's just one live version I have that's actually tuned a step higher and so is my guitar I guess.
I like Tony Martin but this song is best with Ozzy's creepy voice
Yeah ozzy's version is always best
Dio sounds scary when he sings it but.
Ozzy sounds straight up horrified when singing it. The way its meant to sound haha
One name: Ian Gillan
@surgpath1 One could argue that Deep Purple began Heavy Metal. Although, Black Sabbath came out the same year.
obviously i already knew that geezer wasnt there, and bill ward wasnt there, and holy crap did i know that ozzy wasnt with them.although i wasnt aware that vinny appice was drumming on that album,i heard that iommi asked ward to be in the album but i forgot the answer.but, iommi is half of black sabbath.put iommi with ozzy, then it is black sabbath.
agree, ozzy is classic sabbath, howeverdio did have the voice for the new sound (or did hey hav to make a new sound to fit dios voice??:P)
@surgpath1 the real dark heavy metal
@ Punorss
Yeah, and based on what I have seen from recent Sabbath stagings (with the "classical" band's members) none of them has lost even an atom of his contribution as compared to the late 60's and early 70's. good fucking god tony iommy is amazing
+Magik of Black forever+
On the drums the great Cozy Powel.R.I.P.
@TheUnbreakableOtaku He was more THE VOICE of Sabbath, Dio was just too LIGHT for my taste but some of his stuff with Sabbath was great ill give him that
tony is god!
@Myuzishin I must disagree, Dio was a very humble man, hence Heaven and Hell, Iommi knew Dio was the only choice , I really doubt any other former Sabbath singers were ask to join. Mind you this is my opinion, but I'd be willing to wager money on it.
Tony Martin Kicks Ozzy's ass !
Its not supposed to, he put his own spin on it and i like it
@miralles94 Good pick up on that. Too funny. I guess he is human...maybe. Actually sounded cool though
I agree with u, 100%
They totally needed Geezer up there jammin' it.
@mynameisjonas45
thats fine, but i dont see the point on expressing negative views on something you know you dont like, you should just not comment here at all
how can you favorite this clip? black sabbath live 1974 with children of the grave.. that´s a favorite sabbath clip!! this is just a good cover band with toni iommi as special guest!
Tony Martin might have a better voice in general, but NOBODY else in the world can pull these songs off like Ozz. Ozzy's voice is best suited for what he does, like this song--Ozzy has a very Haunting loud voice Long Live the Ozzman!
oh i have this cd what happened was ozzy was sick with bronchitis so he couldnt sing
@surgpath1 agreed.......
5:11 haha tony and Powell
Hey Philiprocks2009, it's not War Pigs. Maybe you ought to look up War Pigs - Live Paris and compare. Great band....
HAY MAMA!!
@ThefirstDrInsane2U What planet you been living on duh? Did Idream this or what if I'm not mistaken the original Sabbath line-up played Ozz fest for a couple of years,
what big songs did black sabbath actually have after the ozzman left?
I agree totally with Donsatanas.
Only the original band could pull the song off.
@Alhambrattp
What does Dio have to do with this song and Martin?
Is the singer Tony Martin?
Is it Black Sabbath or Tony Iommi only? The bassist doesn't look like Geezer Butler. I can't recognize Bill Ward.
I cannot picture Ian Gillian singing this song.
Is it played a half step down live? Sounds like it. In fact all live versions sound like it.
D# here i think
@SNAL3 Its sabbath to me. Name on the records say sabbath. Music is good, just as you'd hope for a sabbath album. Its sabbath.
its Sabbath but Iommi was the only original member at the time. He's the only one who has been in the band the entire time
Good day for rock!
ward wasnt in the band at this point thats what i know.the dehumaniser album has ward in it.when dehumaniser was made, tony asked geezer to come back and had to talk ward back and then dio came back and they made dehumanizer.
@MobileSpies And Geezer isn't?
