MTB Technical Climb Fail...For Now!

- This ride exposed a weakness I wasn't really aware of, technical climbs! All of my local trails have some challenging sections with some roots and rocks but nothing that requires real skill, balance, timing and precise line choice. This one kicked my behind! Now I'm motivated to go back and session it until it's MINE!

A+ for effort man. I think that is one thing that keeps all us going is the drive to kill it all. That little voice in our head that says "this is not going to beat me."
Thanks, Buddy! I AM gonna go back and really break it down and figure it out. That little voice can get us in trouble😅
I ride up a trail network around Rapid City S.D. I have cleared everything going up just not all at once. When I dont get it I always remind myself to smile and keep trying, instead of getting frustrated. Your still having fun.
That's a great attitude!
I recently got back into biking after a mitral valve failure. It really jacked up my balance which I am trying to regain. But my last ride was 37 miles. Videos like these are inspirational.
Wow Stephen! That's huge! Keep at it and it will come. Thanks so much for the kind words. My Son encouraged me to do this because people might want to see a real person trying to get better on the trails. Good luck to you and your riding!👊
David and I did that trail about a month or so ago. That hill is a monster and is no joke. Great job!
I’m gonna get it. It’s just going to take some work😁 Thanks!
You almost got it man. But man that go pro effect really is in effect there. If you didn't explain how steep it was when you fell down, I would have no clue how steep that is. There is this one section of huge roots at a trail that I go to, it's difficult but doable by many. I can't do it even though on video, I do way bigger stuff then they do. That will be my white whale for now.
We all have one! Yeah, I don’t like over-explaining how steep something is (because then you’re just whining) but it’s no joke! You gotta be perfect. Either spinning out or looping out. I LOVE a challenge😁
i suck a techy climbs. Nice video! i really like the narration
Thanks, Sebastien! Just one more thing to get me out on the trails! I'm glad you liked it👊
I have a small technical hill that I have yet to clean...The last part at the very top is what kicks my butt every time. It's off camber, with a rock lip about a foot and a half high with a large root on one side. I will get it one day....🤞
I can't tell for sure, but your video suggests that you missed a prime opportunity: Observing Adam's second run before trying your second run. You could've videoed him as well.
Do you you ever watch Rich Drew's videos? He will often follow his brother up tricky spots, either on his bike or running behind, often with the GoPro filming. Then Rich tries to duplicate the line that his brother rode.
I was trying to ride my own White Whale tech climb and I was on about my tenth attempt - that day - and about my 30th attempt in total. Along comes a guy followed by a girl who was following him exactly. They ripped up the challenge like it wasn't there. I watched. They rode a line that I had not even considered. So, on my eleventh try, I did what they did and up I went, no problem.
Out at Joe pool lake trail in Dallas, Tx there is a steep hill, a beast, it took me several tries and learning good technique to make it. But after getting it, it seemed like no big deal afterwards.
Still gotta conquer this one for me🙂
Stay safe and protect your shoulder
Ha! I'll do my best...no promises 😀
There are a lot of techy climbs near me and I’ve conquered most of them. I’ve learned a lot of techniques through trial and error. Proper weight placement over the front or rear wheel can be critical. Proper gear is important. Lowest isn’t always best. I find a higher gear where I can pour on high torque slowly while thrusting my hips forward to lunge over a rock or root is key. It also helps avoid pedal strikes. On one hill the only way I can crest the top (which is full of rocks and roots) is to climb at highest speed possible and shift to the middle gear just before the top. Too high or too low and those roots stop me dead.
Yeah, I know I was going too slow trying to conserve some energy since it takes a pretty long effort to get all the way up. I had plenty of leg and wind left and just held back too much. It's also easy to look at an obstacle through your eyes when you were less skilled or fit. You're probably stronger than you think!
Trail Breaker decent strength but not much endurance! I have to use what little I got wisely!
The trail that broke me in Colorado 😂 I have to go back and ride crash free 🤘
Gotta get back on that horse 👊
There’s a long super steep climb full of big loose rocks on a trail near my house. I can make about 25% of the way. II’m not even sure it’s possible to climb and is really meant for descending. I keep trying though.
I know what you mean. If it's super loose with various round rocks it can be impossible to generate enough momentum. Once you spin out you're toast! Everyone needs that one aspirational feature, whether its a climb, drop or long trail. It's why we keep at it
Where was this ride?
The granite loop at the International Horse Park MTB course. It's just East of Atlanta, GA and was built for the '96 Olympic bike races
