      Oh wow, drought situation? We've noticed some other races we've done this year had very little mud. Wondering if it's a fuel cost concern if there is a need to truck in water, or if local sources have dried up. We are in a bit of a heat wave and very little rain in the last several weeks here. I'm guessing that many locations are experiencing the same. Did they have a fire jump? Sure sign of drought is no fire jump at the end. We experienced that in CA.

      Have a great race! They used to be more strict about enforcing penalties. If you are in an open wave, they are very relaxed about doing the full 30 burpees. If you are in an elite or age group wave they will be more strict about it. There may be penalty loops instead of burpees in some spots, where if you don't complete an obstacle, you'll need to run an additional distance (usually 200 meters or so).

    I'm really wanting to get into the world of Spartan Races and am looking to do a race in May. What's a competitive time for the sprint/super/beast? I would love to eventually maybe even this year compete seriously in it. Also great footage gives a great idea of what to expect!

    • @OCRKings
      @OCRKings  2 роки тому

      Yes join the Spartan tribe! You will not regret it. Races are a ton of fun, give you something to workout towards, and the community is great.
      Race times vary a ton depending on the terrain at each venue but spartan does post estimated fastest times on their site for each race. A day after an event, they post race times as well so you can see where you stack up against everyone.
      For the quickest math... 1 hour for sprint, 2 hours for super, and 3 hours for beast.
      Flat courses will go faster and mountain terrain will be around those times.
      Good luck and have fun! Hope to see you out there at a future race! They are addictive!

    Thanks for sharing! Quick question. I have a spartan race in October. I bought a go pro because I wanted to record the footage for my wife to see, but I found out after buying it that go pro batteries only last for like an hour? But I’m doing a beast, so I’ll obviously be on the course for much longer than an hour. Do you have any advice or tips about recording the experience and how to make the most out of it? Thanks!

    • @OCRKings
      @OCRKings  2 роки тому

      We do battery swaps during the races and check the battery level repeatedly to try to get the most out of each battery. We use waterproof bags to store the spares (listed here... www.amazon.com/shop/ocrkings). We also do frequent lens wipes to keep everything clean. Everything else is editing.

    Have any tips for shoes and how to complete obstacles that mostly need you to be able to do a pull-up. I cannot, but am pretty limber and stealthy so wondering if there are any tips you have

    • @OCRKings
      @OCRKings  Рік тому

      Shoes are tough. We continue to search for the perfect pair, but it seems like there is no perfect solution. We use either the Innov8 Talons 260 or the Spartan/Craft OCR shoes. Both are pretty good as far as grip and obstacle performance. If you can't do a pull-up, you'll need to use your feet/legs wherever possible. We have a wall climb video that speaks to this (throwing your leg and hooking your foot to help get over the wall). When on the dangling type obstacles, like monkey bars, go to the far edges where they have the step stool things so you don't have to reach or jump for the bars. Once you grab them, move swiftly across, pumping your legs almost like pedaling a bike. This helps create forward momentum and moves your mass forward rather than down. If you can, try and work pull-ups into your workout routine, they really do help if you don't have access to obstacles to practice on. Hope this helps!

    • @OCRKings
      @OCRKings  2 роки тому +1

      Good question! For elites and competitive waves, there should be strict enforcement of burpees. For open waves, burpees/penalties should remain (since the threat of a penalty is what makes completing Spartan obstacles so much more satisfying), but as far as having an official count every single one, that seems unnecessary. For open waves, we're fine with the honor system. If some open wave folks skip them, that's lame, but that's on them.

    So how much do all the object weigh? (Sandbag, Atlas Ball, and the Bucket)

    • @OCRKings
      @OCRKings  Рік тому

      Excellent question! According to Spartan, the sandbag weighs 60lbs for men, 40lbs for women. The Atlas stone weighs 100 to 110lbs for men and 70-80lbs for women. The bucket can change from race to race, but generally weighs 60lbs for men and 30 to 40lbs for women.

    Question: Does anybody know how to protect your glasses from mud? Any suggestions please

    • @OCRKings
      @OCRKings  Рік тому +1

      Excellent question! Hmm, other than having scratch resistant sport glasses, we're not sure how to keep glasses scratch free, and how to keep mud and water at bay. Not sure if taking them off for certain obstacles is a viable solution, and/or carrying a lens cloth in a dry bag is helpful (or would a cloth be detrimental when dealing with mud). We will post this very question in Reddit and see who responds.

    How the gell do you keep track that people are doing the full obstacles and not just walking them like I seen some ppl do the monkey bars

    • @OCRKings
      @OCRKings  Рік тому +1

      It depends on the wave and the officials watching the obstacle(s). In the competitive waves they watch very closely. Anyone who skips has to do a penalty. In the open (non-competitive) waves, it's more on the honor system.

    Your two do such a great job of capturing footage from and reviewing the races you run that it helps gain interest for others to attend. But, you can't be at every race type or venue. Both national chain and local races.
    I've looked for something like this for a few years now but haven't ever found anything like it. It may be something that a community like yours could create. Ratings for things like difficulty, attendance, obstacle types/quality, etc.
    What about a community created OCR review site where people who run races around the country post their thoughts and/or photos from venues to support the races you couldn't attend but may be close to others who didn't know of the race in their area.
    What are your thoughts on something like that? I got into OCR from watching channels like yours and getting to hear about and preview the events definitely helps more people catch the OCR bug.

    I'm about to make my first race at big bear lake CA but my number one question is I'm wearing vision glasses how I'm suppose to pass under water

    • @OCRKings
      @OCRKings  2 роки тому +1

      Great question! Ok, some strategies might include putting your glasses in a pack and taking off and leaving your pack on the ground to the right or left of the dunk wall. Another might include using water proof bags such as these amzn.to/3KaSixv and putting your glasses in there before you go under water (typically only at the dunk wall). Finally, you may want to carry with you a soft eyeglass cleaning cloth with you in a waterproof bag so you can gently remove and water or crud that might get on your glasses (using some clean water to prevent scratches). Hope this helps, and good luck at Big Bear!

      Marlin. I'm near sighted and normally wear proscription. I run without the glasses. I miss the long distance views but having them would slow me down and I would not be as aggressive if I had to worry about them.

      Can you manage with contact lenses? I've run a few TM events that way - only lost one once (use disposables) going through Arctic Enema. I'd be nervous about breaking normal glasses on a course.

      I'd recommend getting contacts. I'm basically blind without my glasses, but, with contacts, I've done a few OCRs without a problem.

    What happens if you can’t complete an obstacle? I can’t climb a rope to save my life.

    • @OCRKings
      @OCRKings  Рік тому +13

      Good question! OK, typically in Spartan Race, if you are unable to complete an obstacle you must do a penalty, usually 30 burpees. Recently, Spartan has swapped out the burpees for a penalty loop, meaning a missed obstacle like the rope climb may result in an additional (short) distance that must be run, adding time and distance to your results.

    You don’t have to do burpees if you do t want to. If your in an open heat you can skip an obstacle or burpees. Only elite and Age group have to do them.
