Great content. My wife and I are headed to San Diego to do our 1st race in a few weeks and have been searching youtube for help. Lots of vlogs where folks with G0-pros are showing the course but, very little instruction. We really appreciate this video slowing down and discussing all the obstacles, with some great information on how to actually do them! Thank you.
everything just so easy when you a tall person. I’m 4’9 of moderate fitness level and I’ve just skipped most of the obstacles that involves reaching far. Weights, no problem for me. It’s the climbs and rings that is challenging
Thank you for the video I’m planning on doing the 5k sprint in Grand Rapids Michigan in October 2023. I’ve never did anything like this I’m trying to get all the suggestions and tips I can get.
Mahalo for the video! Headed to San Jose this Aug!!!! I've completed the Sprint... and I'll do the Beast in Nov in SC.. Will definitely use these techniques!
Yeah I muscled myself up that ripe climb last month and ran out of energy on the way down, got rope burn and had a bloody finger for the rest of the race. Should have done something like this.
Great video!! I really liked the obstacles showcase with the commentary and keep up the good work! I’m currently training for the full trifecta weekend at mtn Tremblant this summer 🔥💪
I'm running my first ever spartan race tomorrow.... doing the 10k Super... would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous haha. Super thankful for this video though brother, thanks for the explanations!
@@Obstacleracingmedia race was awesome! So fun. It was cold, wet and rainy here in Michigan so a lot of the obstacles were covered in mud which made it next to impossible to grip. Great experience nonetheless! Will do it again next year for sure
When I did my last spartan run, the rope climb was the one I failed at. It was near the end and I was already tired and I didn’t know the right climbing method. This time I’ll get it
Great Video! My wife, friend and I will be doing an open Sprint this Saturday. It will be their first time doing a spartan race and my 2nd time. However, a lot has changed since I ran one in 2019. I have a couple questions for you I was hoping you can answer: 1. My first Sprint was monitored since it was in a competitive group, but I heard you mention on the video that there is no one monitoring the penalty during an open race. Is that correct? 2. Is there now a penalty option between a loop or burpees? OR does this depend on the obstacle? Never heard of the loop penalty. 3. How do you know which obstacles are one attempt pass/fail and which obstacles are multiple attempts? 4. Does the sprint still have a tire flip?
1. Open racers everything is on your honor. It is up to you to do the penalties, or even to do the obstacle at all. Each obstacle has a sign near it that says "If you feel unsafe, you can skip this obstacle." (I am paraphrasing) 2. The loops are new, they have been slowly adding more each year. You can always ask the volunteer what the penalty is when you approach it. 3. Open wave, again, you can kind of do what you want. Like The Spear is one attempt, but if there aren't people waiting behind you, many people try more than once. 4. The tire flip has gone away since they lost the tire sponsor, so we haven't seen it this year.
This was so helpful for me!! I was worried that some of my old injuries would prevent me from doing this. Now I see that I can modify at my own pace to protect those joints. For my ankles, I would like to use my heavy duty boots. Would anyone agree/disagree?
Would not recommend boots at all. A decent pair of trail shoes is all you need. You don't need the most expensive kind. Go to a local shoe store where they do fittings, and tell them you are doing an obstacle race and would like to try some trail shoes.
@@elizabethpalmer1435 I’m not in it for the “suck” or the pain. I’m in it for the challenge. And the arbitrary blast (some soaked, some not). could really throw off someone’s race at these cold temps. I don’t know, I guess I’m soft. ;)
If you want to compete against other people, you can run in the elite field where you can not get help. This is the afternoon open wave where people are doing it for fun.
Yeah, it's lame☝🏻 what's the point of taking part if you are skipping already the first obstacle? If you are not able to climb a 6ft wall, at least do the penalty burpees. Ok, that's kinda physical obstacle, but walking under a submerged wall? Really? Is it so hard, that you have to walk around it? I'm more of a long distance runner, not a gym/weightlifting guy. But I've signed up for my first Spartan (10k) in June - before that London Marathon in April. Bought some weights, a power station, TRX bands & hell, let's get ready and do this shit properly! I mean, test & challenge yourself☝🏻 because what's the point of just slide by through the whole course?🤔🤷🏻
1:40 dude.. this was soo lame! 🤦🏻 What a cheater 😑 Why participate in this event in the first place, if you're skipping obstacles? 😑🤦🏻 LAAAAAMEE !!!😂🫵🏻😅
Thanks for the video. I actually teared up when I saw those guys helping and hanging with that girl until she go over. 🥲 I'm running my first Sprint tomorrow in Nashville....with a more experienced friend. I suspect he will have to hang back for me too lol
Thank you for the shout out, sir. Proud to be on the highlight reel.
Running my first Spartan this weekend, and this video is really helpful! I’m excited!
How did it go!!?!

This was awesome to watch as an upcoming first timer!
Fantastic! Where are you racing?
Running my first 5k in Barre, MA tomorrow I’m sure this will help a lot thank you
I want to do a spartan race next year in June. I can run, but don't have much upper body strength. Now I am doing my research and then start training.
Mason just signed us up for Spartan 5k 2024 in San Diego. First time for us, so excited
Thank you. Very helpful to see different people and their attempts with your commentary.
You are super welcome. That was the goal of these videos.
Awesome video! Hope to do a sprint next year

So happy to hear that! It is def our goal to help you feel more prepared.

How are the t-shirts fitting this year? Last year they were a bit small.
I find them to be good this year.
I’m normally an XL and had to exchange it for a XXL this year.

You sound like Dr Mike from RP fitness lol
That guy has an enormous head!

Missed the hand lift and stepped on the quad 😂
How far of a run between obstacles?
Swingers 😂😂
What are penalty loops if I heard that correct
I am not sure but I would think that is if you fail at the obstacle you need to do loops to make up for it. Same with burpees.
did all of them.. you guys need to get on my level.
How often to people have there phone for music?
Technically not allowed, but occasionally people do it. The race themselves may have music playing through speakers at certain obstacles for a vibe.
@17:21 🐸
...cause they are not paying attention...that guy and that guy hahahahahha
How long does it take an average person to complete the sprint course? 2-3hrs?
If straight off the couch- 2 hours plus. If you run at least 2 -3 times a week - 90 minutes to 1 hour 45.
i thought the spear throws were going to be like gongs now
Turns out everyone hated it.
@@Obstacleracingmedia fair enough
No burpees after the failed attempt?
I use all upper body strength on the muddy rope with no problem
Congrats!
does everyone get a free headband?
Yeah, if they’re trying to get repeat racers, hosing down the open heats in sub-40 temps is not a good idea.
Soft

So you don’t get a special medal for 1st place or top 8?
They have elite waves in the morning. They give away medals (and sometimes plaques) for 1-3 men and women. Plus 1-3 every AG men and women.
