Triathlon really is about being a all-round athlete and Sam is the best swimmer and biker in the sport. He proved that 5 minutes more power on the bike is better than holding back and putting in more than 5 minutes on the run. He knew he wasn't the best runner so the bigger the gap off the bike the better for him and that 5 minutes of extra power gave him the win. I'm not sure why people love to hate him but i guess its because he is quiet and not trying to prove anything to anyone. Congratulations Sam.

I have to be honest, because of the bumpy start of the season, the issue in Roth, the covid 3 weeks ago, I wasn't even sure that Sam would finish the race, let alone win it. But after seeing him on the bike and transitioning to the run, I was completely speechless. Such a strong performance. So well deserved and only 24 years old. Excited with all the new athletes coming into long distance. Congratulations Sam Laidlow :)

@@annac3514 he's never won an ironman until now, the only time he's come close is at the world champs. Now everyone raises their game for the big show, I get that, but to do it twice and then see performances fall off a cliff....... Some of those power numbers are in my lame opinion, way ahead of where he's usually at.
I'd love to know his secret, all I'm saying.

A great, great World Champion! I could really get a glimpse of Sams mentality in this Interview. After that race with that mentality hes a big Inspiration for me! Already getting a bigger than life figure. I really look ahead for any races hes doing in future. I wanna get the Laidlow in real life. Keep on beeing the Person you are Sam! I just see success when he continues at that mentality level. I love to see what is going to come! Thanks Bob for another great Interview! Always the best

There were a lot of doubters, but Sam is the real deal. Learned a lot of interesting things about him and his training from a great podcast with his Dad on 'That Triathlon Show' and you can really understand that his endurance was already on another level as a kid. More great things to come from Sam and his team.

Lol he has absolutely no track record of winning as a kid. In fact this is his first Ironman win. And only this year won a 70.3. It’s a classic sign of a B grade athlete “all of the sudden” attaining not just A grade heights, but legendary heights and achievements while training in seclusion and in Girona (the PED Capitol of the world). It’s more than a little suspect sorry to say.

I can only imagine next year 2024 women's event, It's definitely looking like it's Anna Haug's race to "LOSE", unless if Taylor Knibb decides to participate after Olympic Gold in Paris. It will be history repeating itself in 2024 Women's Nice event, A Young'en (Taylor Knibb)winning and a seasoned German (Anna Haug) chasing down for the win and placing 2nd! GG!

Well said Sam, On the subject of aerobic endurance training and the benefits of this type of exercise for young athlete's. Too much emphasis is placed on lots and lots of high intensity threshold & Vo2 max type training with juniors who are trying to develop into our sport. This can be highly toxic for the body and can cause massive inflammation, leading to possible burnout and injury. I think this is a trend that has been passed on into triathlon from swimming. But swimming has no "impact" on the body, not like running!!
DR Phil Maffetone said this back in the early 80's and it certainly helped Mark Allen towards Ironman domination later. Keep up the great work, it's very important to spread your message on this topic...It's also kind of new, it's not been said before by a world champion and it will really benefit our sport into the future if your message can be embraced..
