It wasn't a great anime. It had a great concept but also had some deep flaws in the execution. I wish it had been better. The flaws include Meteora's annoying quirks that are unnecessary to the character. Rushed parts of the plot, and the exposition dumps required by the pacing. So you would've preferred a clichè ending i see. Watching the same kind of ending where the "villain" gets defeated by the heroes over and over is what you want? This anime actually did something new with Altair. Altair was never truly a villain if you think about it. She was a creation who was bearing the weight of her creator's despair and sadness and couldn't forgive the world for that. She wasn't going to destroy the world to enjoy herself, she was doing it because she had lost all hope that anything good can happen to her. If you wanted the black and white story then you watched the wrong show because this is a story with grey characters. Maybe only Magane can be considered a true villain but other than her there were only human characters with understandable motivations. Altair meets with her creator and manages to create an alternative universe in which they'll both live? I honestly couldn't have thought of a better ending. Surely better than the usual "heroes kill the villain" simply because she wasn't an actual villain. Some people who enjoy clichè stories wouldn't like this ending for being anticlichè but aren't you craving to see something new and unexpected rather than the usual clichè endings? This is just my opinion, so don't take it too seriously
