    I've never heard the bit about using glossy paper, but a veteran sharpener said he uses regular newspaper for his final polish.

    I tried this too a while back, and like you, I saw no difference, Mitch. It's difficult enough for me to keep the blade at a consistent angle when stropping without adding another step to the process.

      It took me some time to get stropping to work, and it's very easy to round over what should be the sharp edge. Difficult to explain in words or even video.

    I literally just started using Bark River compound. It comes with black 3,000, green 6,000 and white 12,000 grit. Got a serious mirror polish on my bevel however I've heard other people swear by using news paper print to strop something about the ink is abrasive. I've never tried that though so I dunno if it works or not

      I can't be sure, but I suspect these ranges of branded and even unbranded compounds are all made the same, if not in the same facility. They do a great job and are consistent in their grit. Even the branded ones aren't overly expensive.

      @@mitchwoodwork I have found big differences between compounds. The lowest quality is Blue Spot - which is the one most commonly found in the UK. Veritas green is good and spreads easily but is only half a micron and produces almost no visible steel particles. Trend paste (about 8000 - 10000 grit they say) is just the opposite and turns the strop black in no time at all. It also leaves a nice mirror finish. DMT diamond paste is recommended by many but I have yet to try it. Bark River compound is also highly regarded but difficult to obtain on these shores.

      @mingulay29 I'm using MPower orange, white, and blue at the moment, and they are all working well. My usual was just Trend blue or Toolstation blue, which I reckon are identical.
      Autosol is another favourite of mine from the past, when I used to charge mdf with it.

    Hi Mitch, my understanding of this has always been that it's used _as_ the stropping, not as an additional step in stropping. That's how I heard it was used and tried it myself years back when I was into knives. From what I can see it works a about as well as bare leather, so it's more about removing the very last vestiges of burr/wire edge and aligning the edge. Once you have polished the edge as happens on a loaded strop there's no improvement to be had from this IME.

    • @mitchwoodwork
      @mitchwoodwork  4 роки тому

      Cheers. That would align with the result of my very limited test, in so far as I didn't detect any improvement. However Nicholas did say that it should be used after normal stropping with a honing compound, which is interesting.
      I usually finish straight off the plane anyway, so I'm not sure any improvement in sharpness will benefit my work, but it's a bit of fun to investigate.

      @@mitchwoodwork Well it might benefit someone who isn't stropping the same as we both do. Standard strops vary in hardness and 'aggressiveness' depending on what material is used and whether there's compound (and what the compound is) or no compound. But I fail to see how anything meaningful can be happening _to an already polished edge_ if no metal is being removed, as you highlighted perfectly with no colour being deposited on the paper! After bare horse-butt leather? Yeah, maybe.

    Hi Mitch, in my opinion best way is leather strap with honing compound. I use one with 10 my particle size.

    • @mitchwoodwork
      @mitchwoodwork  4 роки тому

      That's what I use. The paper is supposed to be an additional step, but I'm not sure yet.

      @@mitchwoodwork I just got into sharpening my pocket knives and such and all I have is the (325/750) Smith’s 4” Combination Diamond stone portable sharpener. Real cheap in the US about $15 and it works surprisingly well just don’t have anything to get that burr line out (I have no strop or compound yet) and I’m trying this and I’m seeing marginal results... maybe it’s just straightening out the edge on my $10 pocket knife but I can feel a (slight) difference

      @@greg6162 Good to know. A lot of anecdotal evidence on printed paper polishing, so vary hard to debunk. Either I read the wrong magazines, or they're not as quick to polish as honing compound 🤔

    As most paints contain a form of oxide, often aluminium oxide (the same material most sandpapers and grinding wheels are made from), it is quite probale that you can polish steel with paper with print on it. The glosy texture of magazines can be made in a variety of ways and my guess is that it is the paint, not the gloss that does the majority of polishing.
    Just made a quick test on some magazine paper with print on it, but no glossy layer, and that polished a plane iron nicely. Just about as shiny as when using a strop. The upside here could be that the paper, when laid on a flat surface is just that: flat, while a leather strop will thend to be softer and round the edge a bit.

    • @mitchwoodwork
      @mitchwoodwork  4 роки тому

      That's encouraging. I was probably unlucky with my magazine choice. Thanks for sharing your experience

      You can order Pikal polish which is pure aluminum oxide... you can certainly polish steel with it, and it makes for a very good strop.

    Knife sharpening: I sometimes do the final stropping on newspaper. Not glossy paper. I am not alone in this. Search UA-cam for "stropping with newspaper".

    • @mitchwoodwork
      @mitchwoodwork  3 роки тому

      Two possibilities, it removes any micro burr(s), or it actually has some abrasive capacity and hones the edge.

    Lay the colored paper over a leather strop, then dab with a cloth soaked in alcahol. The clay will transfer. Three of for coats will do for a start, then apply one for each honing.

    Could it be the way you’re stropping?
    You seem to be cutting into the paper.
    You wouldn’t do that on a leather strop where one uses a side-to-side action, alternating on the edge of the two faces

    • @mitchwoodwork
      @mitchwoodwork  Рік тому

      Maybe, I though I was fairly consistent when I tried it, although it was a long time ago now.

    Friction is friction. If you're determined enough, careful enough and patient enough you could hone an iron with a wet feather. Just don't expect me to wait for you to finish.
    If you really need to feel confident that you've got your edge sharp enough use jewellers rouge or diamond paste. You can get jewellers rouge in varying grades up to the equivalent of 3000 grit sandpaper and diamond paste up to 15000 grit or higher if you really feel the need. Either one will be so sharp you will only notice the difference with a microscope, and both of them will be just as dull as the other after the first stroke.
    Really, after 1000 grit it's the same principle as polishing your family jewels. You're really doing it because you enjoy the activity itself, and not because there's any extra benefit beyond the first couple minutes.

    • @mitchwoodwork
      @mitchwoodwork  4 роки тому +6

      Can't say I've ever stropped the family jewels, and I don't think I'll ever be doing so on paper. The thought of paper cuts brings tears to the eyes 😂
