TWSBI Eco: Quick Look

- The TWSBI Eco fountain pen is one of the most affordable modern piston-filling fountain pens out there today. Overall I think it's a fantastic entry-level pen that feels like it should be much more expensive than its price.

I don't know. I started the opposite way, I went from expensive pens, mostly Montblancs, to more affordable ones to complement my collection. Now 3 Ecos later, I must say, these are so much fun to write not only for newbies, but also veteran fountain pen users. Value for money is through the roof with these pens, in my opinion. An absolute gem, everyone should have experienced. Love the stub by the way.
I agree-- I love my Eco and my Diamond, both excellent writers. I've had no problems even with shimmering inks.
I'm new to fountain pens, so I only have pens around or below this price range. I LOVE my Eco!! I purchased the one with the white cap. It's by far my favorite pen and despite the extra fine nib, it writes very smoothly! I use it every day for notes to journaling, and it really shows off interesting ink qualities, especially on Tomoe River paper! If you're looking for a cheaper demonstrator with incredible qualities, the Eco is definitely the way to go.
Yeah, I totally agree. Beyond the Metropolitan, I think the Eco is my go-to recommendation for people just getting into fountain pens. The demonstrator body & piston filling mechanism really separates it from ballpoints or rollerballs. - Colin
im in taiwan and just bought a twsbi eco. i tried them all the mini and the more expensive ones, they also habe a extra taiwan twsbi with the white sun on blue ground instead of the logo and transparent red and blue parts. ( i guess interesting for collectors)
but i have to say, i liked the feel and the size of the eco the most. because of minimal leakages the opaque capped ones look nicer in the long run. it feels also much more expensive then it is, the built quality is very good.
when it came to performance, i loves the fine nib on the eco the most, that's why i bought it at the end. for me the writing experience is the most important and therefore a definite winner. i like them also to have some feedback but without scratching ( i am a leftie so i know how scratchy nibs can get) and it writes in every direction well. i use it also to write chinese charachters, that's where some feedback is necessary and the ability to use it sideways or perhaps against the grain, which explains the stiffness of the nibs.
i hope twsbi gets more attention, so there will be more models and cool designs in the future, perhaps a flex nib too if people request them enough.
My mom just bought one today for my bday :D
Platronix3D oh nice! :)
Do you like it so far?
Platronix3D Happy Birthday!
Happy(super late) b day!
Happy birthday. Who knows, it's been 3 years and today might be your birthday
static discipline lol
Just got my TWSBI Eco Smoke RoseGold today and I love it so far!
Sir, while hearing other presenters, minus sbrebrom, you cut to the chase. You are to the point and I really like that. Keep pressing forward professor! Semper Fidelis
Getting this as my first fountain pen for my birthday. I am excited to begin this as a new hobby.
Awesome! It's a fantastic first pen, and one of my favorites. Welcome to the FP hobby and happy birthday! -Rachel
It's addictive! :). I really like my Eco; mine's a stub nib. Happy belated birthday, btw.
I have been writing with fountain pens for quite some time now. Among the pens that I have including Pilot, Lamy, Pelikan, Platinum, Faber Castell and also the Twsbi 580, the Eco provides the best writing experience for me. Mine is a medium nib and it is always filled with Iroshizuku Shin Kai ink. I stopped looking out for anything else after I landed on this combination. If this pen gets lost in future I'll just buy it again and keep going.
I bought the lime Twsbi ECO from Goulet Pens, as part of my "Thanks for getting me into fountain pens order" ( That's how I refer to it), and fell in love with it. It quickly became the main pen I used for school. I found pen shop near me and decided to by another lime Twsbi and support a local business - win, win. When I asked for it I was told it was a limited edition for 2016. Newbie me had no idea.
This is an astonishingly helpful and comprehensive video, thank you!
The body of my old Safari recently broke so I'll consider this for a replacement.
The Eco is really really great
But the Fine Nib I got was scratchy, not like a bad nib /cheap one, but there was some feedback I didn't like.
I returned it and bought a Medium Nib and it is fabulous. It is smooth and doesn't write a lot broder than the Fine one.
I recommend it (and the Waterman ink, Inspired Blue is wonderful though)
Excellent, i have my eye on this as my next fountain pen.
Superb video overview. All one needs to know, sans tedious or gratuitous detail.
I have a DIamond 580 M and an Eco EF. They are fantastic.
I just ordered this pen in turquoise based on recommendations from people and youtubers like Boho Berry, without watching videos on it. Now I'm watcing your videos and I'm even more excited to get my pen and the inks I ordered! I'll just go sit by the mailbox now... :'D
Definitely a good option! Loved the Turquoise Eco. Which inks did you go with? - Colin
I love turquoise/blue/mint/teal colors in general, and I wanted ink that would match the pen (I already have black at home) so I decided to get Diamine Soft Mint and Diamine Tropical Glow! I hope I'll be able to see the shimmer when writing with an F nib... If not, I'll just have to get another pen :D
I would definitely get an Eco if it wasn't for the fact that I'd get daily comments about it being a vape.
lol I have definitely gotten that comment on it
Thank you for a very informative video! I've ordered one from Goulet Pens and I am looking forward to using it! Well done!
Well I have finally ordered my first item from you guys. Shipping to Australia has been holding me back. It is one of these with the stub nib. Fingers crossed it is everything all the reviews have been saying it is. :-)
Definitely one of the best under-$30 pens out there. A piston filler at that price is rare & the TWSBI stub nib is really nice. Have one on my Vac700 and love it! - Colin
Good to hear Colin! I bought a Monteverde Impressa as my first stub and have been very dissapointed. It seems to have a burr between the tines and if rolled from side to side clicks and spits ink. I have tried to correct it (there goes the warranty) and it is better, but it's not what I would call smooth.
I love my TWSBI Eco. I have a broad nib, and I can still get a lot of mileage out of a single filling. It is probably my favorite every-day pen, it definitely is a workhorse. On a side note, I think it's slightly odd that the first color they added to the range was lime green. I guess TWSBI just likes to be different, lol.
It was definitely a bold color to go with, especially when their other special editions are more of a muted color. But I think it worked! - Colin
The best entry level fountain pen ever~!!
I have three of these that I bought from your site I love them!!
Wow, only 3? ;) Just kidding! Hoping they have a special edition color like Lime last year. - Colin
Haha, I have a monteverde demonstrator as well but the Twsbi hold ink for so long. Current inks: Monteverde Brown, Edelstein Topaz and Noodler's Shah's Rose and Apache Sunset in the Monte. :)
What kind of blue ink is being used for the first writing test of this pen? I MUST HAVE IT!
I have a white one on the way with a Medium Nib for my first fountain pen
Great review. Thanks
I love ECOs. With the 580, they ar the ones I use the most. Since I discovered demonstrator barrels I don't want anything else 😅
My Eco's barrel cracked near the feed. I've heard their customer service can replace it, but I have to shoulder the shipping cost, and the postal service here is not very reliable. It's such a shame.. I love the way they write and I love the colors.
The Twsbi logo is a Celtic/Indo-European symbol of trinity. It's a spiritual symbol and heritage of the I.E. culture
Sweet pen!
Just bought this last week. Writes really nice with Noodler's North African Violet.
Nice ink choice! Such a vibrant purple must look good in this demonstrator. - Colin
The Goulet Pen Company Thanks Colin!
The Goulet Pen Company You'd be right. It looks magical in the reservoir.
I just got a twsbi eco extra fine. It is not working well at all. It is scratchy and and skips all the time and feeling like it is dragging. I don't think the ink is flowing properly through it. It feels like in order to write with it, I have to use a some pressure and I know enough to know that you shouldn't need to use pressure to write with a fountain pen. Before i inked it up, I filled it with water and emptied multiple times, so it was cleaned before use. I can't say I am impressed with the pen so far.
Update: At first it wrote terribly. Had to use a lot of pressure and skipped alot. It felt sort like a ball point. But after writing with it a bit it has gotten better. It is writing smoother, with considerably less pressure needed and it skips less. But it still skips a little bit. Hopefully it will continue to get better.
Brian, love the new up-close videos!! I have a question on my Eco. By the way, it has been inked up since last summer, and still writes with no priming! Yay TWSBI! Anyway. My question is that last year I took it apart to clean it, and now it doesn't fill up all the way like it used to. Also, it is writing much drier than before. That was why I put it away, for fear of messing it up further. Any tips/suggestions?
I know TWSBI piston pens can be pretty tricky to put together, and one misstep can cause some issues like you're describing. Here's our Quick Tip video on how to reassemble (ua-cam.com/video/Ns4uyyOmKw8/v-deo.html) if you want to make sure its correct. - Colin
I know this is an old video but any idea what that gorgeous burgundy ink is at 2:50?
Might it be Noodler’s Black Swan in Australian Roses? Don’t own the ink but it’s been shown on this channel a lot.
Could you do a video on montblanc ink
We tend to focus our videos on products we carry, which unfortunately isn't Montblanc. Figboot on Pens has a lot of good videos on different MB pens though if you want to check him out: ua-cam.com/users/figboot11 - Colin
The Pen Addict blog also has a lot of great review of the MB ink. Here's one for Toffee Brown: www.penaddict.com/blog/2015/6/5/montblanc-toffee-brown-ink-review - Colin
Just got this pen today from my local shop, they didn't have the all clear which was a downer but still on your recomendation as my second pen I actually love it! The writting experince was more than what I had expected (not sure if it was on the paper I was using to test, but still pretty amazing). Might look into getting the all clear one as well :)
Got it in Black cap EF, once again you recomendation on finer nips, coming from pall points and roller ball world. Keep all the vids coming really helps. I'll check out your store as well if you guys do international shipping :)
The shop keep emphasised "DO NOT USE THE WRENCH TO OPEN THE PEN UP, BRING IT BACK WE'LL DO IT FOR YOU" note sure why.... haha
Glad we were able to help educate during your purchase! We do ship internationally, and you can see all the different options for that on our FAQs page (www.gouletpens.com/faq). We do have a Quick Tip on disassembling a TWSBI using that wrench if you did want to try: ua-cam.com/video/Ns4uyyOmKw8/v-deo.html - Colin
Great video. Timely. I was thinking about a twisbi and didn't know if the eco would be good or if I should just spend the extra 20 and go for the 580.
You really can't go wrong either way if you ask me. But if you're just jumping into the TWSBI brand, the Eco is a great place to start. - Colin
Really what will make me pay the extra 20 is how badly I want the twisbi emblem on top of the 580. Very elegant. The eco is meh. Cool but no 580.
Yup. That one, too.
piston filler at that price is really a cool thing i think
For sure! Hope to see other companies follow their lead. - Colin
I have a clear TWSBI Eco and I love it. The only issue I have is that ink gets trapped in the rubber seal on the inside of the cap. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to get it out?
I use Q-tips to get it out. There's a way to pop out the inner seal to make cleaning easier and replace it. I know it was a Goulet pen video, but can't remember the name of that one.
I'm debating on getting the F or M nib... Would you say the F and M are comparable to the Pilot Metropolitan fountain pens?
I would say they are pretty similar. Maybe the Eco M being a bit broader. You can compare for yourself with our Nib Nook tool: www.gouletpens.com/nib-comparison-tool - Colin
Oh wow, that's a super useful tool! Thanks!
My Eco medium tends to write a fair bit drier than most of my other pens - Lamy 2K, Pilot CH 912, Lamy Accent. Any tips on how to make it a wetter flow specifically on the eco? I should state I'm not too comfortable in adjusting the nibs by hand.
I don't know how relevant this is but even after I completely saturate the feed by pushing the ink down into it using the piston, the pen still doesn't gush out with ink like you'd expect. Does that mean the problem is the nib?
Also, where can I find a replacement nib for Eco, just the nib. Preferably the 1.1 stub. I don't see it as an option on the TWSBI website.
After cleaning & flushing out the pen, using a brass sheet, I'd make sure there isn't anything clogging up the tines preventing ink flow, while also making sure the tines aren't misaligned.
Beyond that, maybe try a wetter ink. Noodler's Apache Sunset could be a good option, see if that helps with it. Overall, the Eco & other TWSBI pens aren't necessarily wet writer unless you go with the stub nib.
TWSBI doesn't sell replacement nibs for the Eco since it's built into the design. The other TWSBI pens use nib units which are sold separately. - Colin
In India it sells for around $50 and Diamond 580 is over $100. Hate that I have to pay double the price for this.
Do you think that a broad nib would be okay for school work?
It depends on the use (notes, paper writing, tests), but I think the line width might be a bit too bold. It's great for headers when taking notes but I don't find it too practical beyond that. - Colin
Has there been any worthy challengers to the TWSBI Eco in the less than $30 (piston preferred) fountain pen category?
Not that I'm aware of with a piston filling mechanism, that definitely makes the Eco unique. In terms of writing performance, I think the Pilot Metropolitan stacks up really well, but aesthetics come into play at that point.
Is the weight listed in the beginning with or without ink in the pen? Because I'd assume that the weight of the ink would make a noticeable difference (unless I'm mistaken).
okay, assuming ink is the same weight as water (and as it's water-based I'm comfortable making that assumption) the difference between filled and unfilled would be under 2 grams bc while it holds a lot of ink, a lot of ink isn't really a lot of ink lol.
So quick question. I just got my eco yesterday, and I filled it today, and my ocd is kicking in....the twisting knob has some play. I'm not sure if this normal, or if messed something up in my dissasembly and reassembly before filling. Thoughts?
What are the two shimmering inks shown at 2:52?
i don't know which twsbi eco should I buy... with M or F nib? i want to use it to write on a daily basis, just some notes and things in my diary, but I'm afraid that F will be too thin
Hello, I'm considering Lamy Safari Fine nib and Twsbie Eco Fine nib for EDC to write on regular notebooks.
Which one of the two would you suggest
I prefer the TWSBI ECO. It'll lay down a finer line which is better for standard notebooks. The piston filling mechanism is something usually seen on more expensive pens. - Colin
I use both equally well on regular notebook paper without any issue. My TWSBI ECO has an Extra Fine nib on it. The Lamy Safari has the Fine nib on it.
What kind of blue ink is being used in the first writing sample? I must have it!
At 2:34? That's De Atramentis Sherlock Holmes (www.gouletpens.com/de-atramentis-sherlock-holmes-35ml-bottled-fountain-pen-ink/p/DA1320 ). - Colin
Thank you Colin! You guys are awesome!
And when you lubricate the piston with silicone, does silicone then remain on the walls and does the ink spoil?
No, generally there isn't enough grease to interact with the ink and the combination doesn't combine as easily! - Colin
Quick question about lubricating the piston. Do I have to use inks with lubrication in them (like Noodler's Polar inks or Noodler's Eel inks), or is the TWSBI supplied silicone grease applied when necessary enough?
I'm no expert, but in the 6 months or so I've been using the Eco I've had no troubles with the piston or the ink I'm using (Noodler's Walnut). I haven't had to apply any silicone grease to the piston as yet.
You don't have to use a lubricating ink. Just re-applying the silicone grease when the piston gets stiff is perfectly fine. It also doesn't need to be re-applied all the often. That said, those Noodler's inks do help. - Colin
Is the M nib on this pen thinner than Lamy Nexx M? I tried using your Nib Nook tool but result from the TWSBI doesn't show much difference between TWSBI M and F nibs to make final conclusion. I need to do regular speed noting so I'd prefer smooth writing than anything else.
Yeah, there's not a huge difference with the fine & medium nib on the Eco. That said, if you're looking for a smoother experience, the medium nib is the way to go here. It'll write a finer line than LAMY medium, but still a very smooth writer. - Colin
Which one is more finer... lamy safari medium or twisbi eco medium please help me out...
Definitely the TWSBI Eco Medium! You can compare for yourself with our Nib Nook tool: www.gouletpens.com/pages/nib-nook - Colin
@@Gouletpens this is great.... thanks a lot....
I may have messed up my feed... do you all sell replacement feeds? or should I just buy a new pen?
We don't offer replacement feeds, but I would reach out to TWSBI directly. They're really good & might have a replacement part available. - Colin
Doesn't Noodler sell piston fillers at that price range too? What's the capacity of those?
Yeah, that's a good point. The Konrad & Nib Creaper are both have piston filling mechanisms, with 1.54ml & 1.00ml ink capacities respectively. So a little bit less than the Eco, but they do have flex nibs. - Colin
Yeah, I think they sell stand alone non-flex nibs for a few dollars too in all sizes. Honestly, I think it's a better 'starter' than Safari's as you seem to get more and pay less. (and a piston filler too! Flex options too!)
Personally, I went straight for a L2k as I don't do collections and wanted a workhorse that was still classy (and classic) years later.
I'm currently using a .25 rotring isograph for drawing and am looking for a fountain pen about the same line width or slightly larger, would that be fine nib or extra fine?
I'd go with the EF nib from TWSBI. I might be closer to .3mm, but that's as thin as it'll go. - Colin
The Goulet Pen Company thanks!
With EF nib, is it wet or dry based on your preference?
The EF is definitely more on the dry side. Similar to a Pilot Metropolitan F if you're familiar. - Colin
Thanks Colin, appreciate
TWSBI eco or Pilot Metropolitan?
I like the TWSBI ECO more! It's a few dollars more, but the built-in piston mechanism is great and love the demonstrator look to it. - Colin
@@Gouletpens
Thank you so much! Im having a hard time deciding between the two.
What ink do you suggest
Any fountain pen friendly ink would work well with this! Pilot Iroshizuku, Diamine, and Colorverse are a couple options that I recommend. - Colin
Can the twsbi eco support ink cartridges?
It cannot. It's a piston filler only, meaning you fill it directly from bottled ink. -Rachel
@@Gouletpens I see, thanks
This or Pilot Prera?
I would lean towards the TWSBI Eco! It's half the cost, and the Prera uses the same nib as the Metropolitan, so there isn't a huge difference in writing experience there. - Colin
Vac 700/R?
Not a Quick Look, but we do have a video on the Vac700 (ua-cam.com/video/05UAA85e6pk/v-deo.html) which is still appropriate now with the Vac700R. This slice (ua-cam.com/video/L2JP6R4eUJo/v-deo.html) talks more about the differences between the two. - Colin
what ink is that at around 0:21?
rachael ragan my best guess would be Diamine Tyrian purple.
That would be Robert Oster Claret (www.gouletpens.com/robert-oster-claret-50ml-bottled-ink/p/RO-50246). - Colin
I absolutely dig this one but I think 40€ is too much. But who knows... Maybe one time
I guess if you incorporate shipping it'd be in that ballpark. Still think that's a good option for the price. - Colin
If you don't mind broken caps, stress fractures, and leaking, this and the rest of the TWSBI pens are for you.
I haven't had any issues with the 3 TWSBI pens I own. I know that they've been very proactive about fixing these issues over the years, like cracking, so it may be worth another try. - Colin
roguegeek my Eco doesn't leak
