I bought this frame after looking at your tutorials. I’ve done a couple of small quilts and just finished a twin quilt for my granddaughter. It was a challenge because of the design but I came up with a quilting design that worked great! Thanks for your inspiration.

I also purchased the Grace q zone hoop frame because of limited space in my sewing room and really like it. Due to neck issues I quilt standing up. I initially put my Bernina 750 on this frame. I found that having the presser foot facing sideways to where I was standing somewhat disorienting and I actually couldn't see the needle as the Bernina has such a large head. Plus it is too heavy to move back and forth when piecing. I then purchased the Qnique 15R and have followed your videos on this machine. Thank you so much for these as well. All in all, I am very happy with both purchases.
Glad you mentioned scale in this tutorial. I will be FMQ my first quilt and have no idea how to maintain scale while stippling. More importantly maintaining scale in blocks.
This is a terrific tutorial and I'm so glad you made it! I fractured my arm in three places just before Christmas and since then, putting a quilt (even a small one) through my domestic machine is very problematic for me. This frame could be the answer! Leah I’m so thrilled you have purchased the Q Zone hoop frame and made these videos. I purchased this frame and a Juki Tl 2000 QI at Christmas and have found it was exactly what I needed. I quilted on a Gammil for years at our church and at one point had set to purchase one but didn’t want to give up that big foot print of space in my sewing space or the funds when I was just going to be quilting personally and not professionally. Last year I went to a quilt convention and saw the hoop frame and knew that was really what was best for me. Your videos on this frame truly cover every single issue and situation that someone would face with their new frame. I thank you as now I can share the videos with friends who have decided to go the same route. I on the fence about this frame. I think it's what I want but I'm not sure about having to shift the quilt. I have a Juki 2010 and was wondering what the width of the quilting area would be and is having to move the quilt a lot of effort. My goal would be to buy a long arm machine down the road.

Hi Linda - That is definitely something to think about. I shot a time lapse of the entire quilting process that I will share next week. I think 36-inches is about the maximum width you should depend on if you don't want to shift to the left and right. Keep in mind you CAN shift to the left and right so you can quilt any width of quilt, but yes, this will add more effort and time to the shifting process. I think the Q-zone is a good fit for quilters that want to add a longarm later because it splits up the cost. Please keep thinking about it and let me know if you have video suggestions!
You did a nice job on the video. My Mom has a similar frame and I was not quite sure of how to use it. She is 88 and has not used it in a very long time. Based on your video, I think I can do it now. Wow, I'm so glad I stumbled on this video! I pre-purchased this frame last August when I saw a demo at my local sewing machine store. It took until January for all the parts and accessories to trickle in and I haven't set it up yet. I'm going to use my Janome Horizon 9400 QCP with it. I haven't even tried ANY FMQ yet so I guess I'm a beginning beginner. :) I have no idea what I've set myself up for, other than it looks like great fun! I have so many questions and haven't found any info on how to set it up or how to use it until now! I'm so excited that you are doing these tutorials. I'm going to check out your assembly video next. Looking forward to a tutorial on ruler work on the hoop frame and how you would shift the quilt left and right to keep pattern consistent.

I ordered my Q-Zone from you Leah, and it arrive a week later, I just got it set up and put my Janome Horizon 9400QCP (29 lb) machine on the carriage. YAHOO! This frame is so much fun.. I am having a few tension troubles as I first sat down all was good but I left for a few minutes and came back to the quilt I was working on and the bobbin thread has been pulling up when I turn corners. However, this frame makes quilting on a home machine terrific, Thank you so much Leah!! I look forward to mare videos.
Whoo hoo! I'm so excited for you! Slow down in those corners a bit and make sure you're getting a stitch or two into those spots before changing direction. Most likely that's a movement thing - not really a tension issue. Slow down especially in those direction changes and I'm sure you'll see improvement.
Hi Karen. I too put my Janome 9400 on the hoop. Did you use the foot pedal or the stop/go button? I tried the pedal but found the cord a little too short and getting in the way.
@@sheilawilton5683 Hi Sheila I used the start/stop button, because I wanted to have all the control in the same place. I don"t think my foot pedal would be able to be on the floor either,. I also think my 9400 might be just too big for the frame, I am looking at a used Juki TL98E (9" throat) because I think smaller and lighter might work better. BUT, I love working with this frame, it is a lot of fune to quilt on, for this beginner.
Hi Leah, ..long time watcher but it seems I'm late to the party with this vid, but I still made it! I have always been a hand quilter, but with some recent changes in life, I am wanting to do some long arm, but do not AT ALL, have the space for a long arm frame. This vid was exactly what I needed to see since I've been looking for weeks now at this frame along with a 15R Qnique. I am looking for something not as expensive, does not take up much foot print and easier to quilt then struggling to move the larger quilts on the home machine. I am interested in seeing what the stitches look like and wondered on your next video if you could have a close up look at the stitches. I look forward to more videos where you are stitching fancier designs and using the ruler, as i love using my ruler foot and rulers on my home machine. Thanks for all you do to teach us fmq.

Would love to see how to use the Gracie Laser with a pantograph on this frame. In particular, how to continue a design when having to shift the quilt horizontally on the frame. I have a dream frame which is very close to this one. I have tried standing up but I didn't like it because the visibility isn't good. I like sitting down and it works very well for me. I have been using mine a lot and every time I use it I learn something new. Thank you for your video you did a great job. :-)
they have drafting stools for use with drafting tables, if you want to be standing but need to sit once and awhile and still work, maybe one of those would help someone with that option. love your videos.
Thank you for your tutorial, I was looking today about buying this Grace frame I have JUKI TL 2010TL , I think it will work well with my machine , I wasn’t sure how to load the quilt you make it so clear and easy , I was quilting Today one small quilt in the home machine without the frame the result wasn’t what I wanted , I like the frame because you can make the fabric really tide for a nice quilting.
My lap sized quilt is wider than the frame so trying to do the continuous line of quilting across the top seems problematic. I need to stop quilting across, move the quilt over, just to reach the small remaining section of quilt for that one line of stitching...to secure it, even though it makes perfect sense to do it. Any suggestions please? I enjoy all your videos and I can't thank you enough for sharing them. Wonderful quilting tips & tricks are SO helpful. You ARE awesome, Leah!
Well, you could stitch that one narrow section down one side of the quilt, then hoop and quilt in the opposite direction (perpendicular) across. Or you can advance over every time. The side-to-side advances are a pain on the hoop frame and do add time to the process. My best advice is to quilt this project the best you can, then quilt more and bigger quilts. The right flow and process will be found with time and practice!
Thank you so much for the tutorial. I'm very interested in this frame for my Juki 2010. I was wanting to see someone do quilting on it to get an idea of how much you can quilt at a time.
I found the space shrank slightly by the end of the quilt. At the beginning I had 5 inches of space. By the end it was more like 3 1/2. There are many designs that can work with this width and look great, but it is a limitation due to the size of the machine.

good Morning Leah, I just purchased the cutie frame from Grace. I was super excited to use my Elna Excellence 720pro until i came across a youtube video that indcated that i could damage the needle bar of the my multi needle posiiton machine. Have you had a problem with issues ?
Thanks Lissa! This machine has an 8.5 inch throat. Generally I subtract 4 inches for rails and quilt, so I had around 4.5 inches of vertical quilting space x 32 inches horizontal - not much to be creative in, but it will give you an idea of frame quilting and if this style works for you!

Great suggestion Michelle! I heard something similar from another quilter about placing a block of wood to the back to stop the machine from slipping back so far. I like the block of wood idea rather than moving the machine because then I wouldn't have space for my spool stand.
Starting watching your video as I’m interested in purchasing a quilting frame. You mentioned leaving your machine on the left because of the direction the feed dogs pull your fabric but aren’t you supposed to drop your feed dogs when doing free motion quilting?
Leah, thank you so much for doing these videos. I have watched all your videos for this frame multiple times. I feel this frame is a solution for me as my space is very limited. I purchased a Brother PQ1500SL to put on the frame. It is a very solid machine and I think it was a good choice. BUT I am very UNSUCCESSFUL using the machine on the frame. Control speed is my problem I think. I get huge loops on the underneath side when I try stippling or simple loops. I don't think tension is the problem because I can sew straight lines with an acceptable (not perfect) stitch. I have practiced hours and hours, days and days. If I knew that a stitch regulator would fix the problem, I would gladly pay for the upgrade. However, I hesitate to put more money into my setup without feeling confident that will solve the problem. Do you have input for me to consider in making this decision.
Great question Sandra! Let's try to troubleshoot this issue together: First thing, only change one thing on your machine / frame at any time. If you change more than one thing, you will not know which thing you changed made the difference. Also keep notes so if this issue crops up again, you can refer to your notes to fix it. So huge loops underneath and that's only appearing with Stippling or Loopy Line, but not appearing with straight lines. Yes, that does sound like a speed control issue. Here's what to try: Mark Stippling in a row across your quilt with a fabric marker. Quilt and follow the line carefully and go as slowly as you can without making super tiny stitches. You may need to use the speed control dial on your machine (if you have one) to slow it down slightly as you stitch. Now check the back. If you see improvement then yes, either practice or a regulator will help. If this made no noticeable improvement, you should check the threading on your machine. Chances are you're missing a guide somewhere on the top. But if the loops are only appearing within certain places, then that is probably a movement issue. Go back to the quilt and try again, not focusing on those specific curves where the loops appeared. SLOW DOWN especially in those shapes. Those areas are where your hands want to speed up and rush because that's a movement that feels good and natural to you. Keep going from there, more practice, more patience. And yes, you can use your frame right now to stitch straight lines on your quilt, so do that! Don't beat yourself up just because the curvy designs have issues. Stitch straight lines for now until you get the hang of moving the machine with more control.

Thank you for doing these videos on this frame. I am learning a lot. It is also helpful to help decide if I am ready for a longarm or hoop frame. How heavy of a home machine will this frame support? I can definitely see where having a 15 or 17 inch machine would be beneficial, even on this smaller frame.
I don't think the weight is the issue, as much as the size. The frame is very sturdy and I haven't experienced any vibration issues. From what I understand, any machine up to the 16 inch longarms will fit on the top carriage.
Excellent video. My frame I ordered from you arrived today (yay) but my machine is still in transit. So I put on the singer 9960 I have just to play. I’m so glad you ran into the bar on this video, because I did the same thing. I have not tried the leaders yet, as I was trying to save throat space. I had about 3.25 in of space to work with my singer and no leaders. No offense to the Grace company, but the lady that does the videos for pinning the leaders has a voice I find challenging to listen to. If you are able to do a video for pinning leaders for the Qzone that would help. Maybe you already have and I don’t know. Looking forward to more videos. I am not 100% with my FMQ so I used a FullLine Stencil tonight and it worked great with the frame. I had to mark tick marks across the width of the quilt to make sure I stayed in the safe zone.

I have bought the Qzone hoop frame and am looking forward to quilting my first quilt on it. I prefer to use leaders, but the ones that came with it are rather long and unwieldy for a small quilt, and I was thinking of making a smaller set of leaders that are just the width of the frame itself for when I'm doing my Project Linus quilts. I was thinking I could just make a sleeve in which to insert a dowel or something similar. How difficult is it to work with that super long leader that came with the frame for such a small quilt?
If you're not planning on making huge quilts, you definitely don't need to leave the leader cloth the length it is. I would cut it in half, or even in thirds, trim off the thick cord that's in the middle of the thick part of the leader cloth, and then hem up the side. It should be a big deal and then you will have 3 top leaders. As for using the wide leader cloth with a skinny quilt, it's not a big deal, but it drapes off both sides and if you don't need it, you just don't need it!
I do plan to do some larger ones. Thats why i was thinking of making myself shorter leaders specifically for my charity quilts that are smaller. But that is definitely a good suggestion for those not planning any large ones at all.
I want one of these frames so much. Being disabled, sewing/quilting is the only thing left that I am able to do. My Brother 2800d doesn't allow me to set the stitch length to zero. 1 is the lowest I can go. The quilt doesn't move freely under the foot. It just cost me $200 to have it repaired because of this. I also keep getting the "eyelashing " when going left or right when meandering. Is there an inexpensive machine that would work with this frame?
In your case, I would drop the feed dogs and see what happens. It also sounds like the quilting foot you're using is resting too low on the machine. See if you can adjust it so it rests higher on the quilt and doesn't squish the layers together so much. As for a machine, you'll need to do research online to find a machine you find affordable for your budget. Yes, always make sure the foot is down! Otherwise it has no tension which means very ugly stitches! I haven't tried the regulator yet, but it's on my list!

No, I don't have the Bernina 770 on the compatibility list so it won't work with the Sure Stitch Regulator. And no, generally you will have 3-4 inches less quilting space than harp space because the rail and clamps reduce your quilting space. So if your harp is 11 inches long, you will have around 7 inches of vertical quilting space x the length of the frame.
You stated that your feed dogs want to pull the fabric so you should quilt left to right. But aren't your feed dogs down? If they are down you could move any direction not just left to right...
I'm sorry I wasn't clear about that. It's important to remember that a home machine likes to quilt from left to right generally because you feed fabric from front to back (same movement). Whether the feed dogs are up or down, this is still the direction most machines will stitch best in. I hope that makes sense - it's not pulling or causing issues. It's simply the overall direction I'm moving as I quilt stippling over the quilt.
Hi Leah! I am in awe over this frame! I had no idea something like this existed! I have a Brother Innovis 3050 Quilting Series machine and love it! But I would love the long arm ability to quilt. Does this frame come with the handles and remote box for starting/stopping stitching, and everything you are using here (except for the sewing machine, of course) and would I be able to use My Brother 3050 with it? Great questions Deanna - Yes, your machine will work well on this little frame, and yes, we include the top plate and handles with our Hoop Frames - leahday.com/products/grace-q-zone-hoop-frame Not all dealers offer the Top Plate and handles with the frame to make it appear cheaper. Just watch out for that!
So, the harp of a domestic is smaller as yours is so I can see problems when quilting a queen/king size quilt. I would think that there would be too much bulk in the harp/throat of the machine.
Thank you, Leah! I am salivating over this frame! I have a Pfaff Expression 3.0 that I have made generous throw-size quilts on, but the struggle dealing with the bulk of the quilt sent me on a mission for a sitdown mid arm. I bought a Baby Lock Tiara i and love the machine but still struggle with the bulk of moving the quilt rather than the machine. I even purchased bungee cords for suspending the quilt sandwich but still haven’t tackled anything larger than a throw. I love ruler work and have done quite a bit (such as your QAL Sunshine Sampler Quilt). I’ve studied videos and blogs about long arms and I’m wondering if on the Qzone if keeping the quilt square is a problem with a larger quilt? Particularly a king size? Any thoughts?
Right NOW the Tiara won't work because of the length, but we may have a work around available soon. Yes, I agree - I quilted for years with machines in tables and even with only 5 inches to play in this hoop frame, this feels easy!
Thalei Burke Where did you get the handlebars to put on the top of your machine? I'm new to FM quilting and just got a BabyLock and the Cutie frame. Love the machine but HATE the handlebars underneath the quilt bed.
Unfortunately that is the way the handles are designed on that frame. The frame I'm using in this video is the Q-Zone Hoop Frame and has a different way of setting the handles.

Leah is there anything we could put on the back bar so that if we go off we don’t hit the plastic with out needle bar like that. I was thinking of a pool noodle but I think it would take up too much room.
The distance from the back of the machine to the needle is 8 inches. With the back bar of the frame in the arm, this left 5 inches of quiltable space in the frame. Then as the quilt took up more space, it reduced further to 3 1/2-inches at the end. Of course, the bigger the machine, the more space you have, but please keep this in mind.
Hi Leah, I bought the cutie frame almost a year ago, got it all set up and put my Juki on it. Within the very first 30 seconds I broke my needle! I haven't touched it since. I did replace the needle plate with one that has a larger opening for the needle but I still need to give it another try. The quilt didn't seem to be laying completely flat when it's stretched out in the frame. I thought maybe that's why the needle broke?? I want to try again but was concerned I was doing it wrong. Does this happen to you?
Most likely you were moving the machine too fast, but not running the speed (needle bouncing up and down) fast enough. I would slow down the movement of your hands on the handles - slower than you think, and mash your foot on your foot pedal a lot harder than you think - pedal to the metal!
What about using the smooth plate that covers the feed dogs, which usually comes with regular sewing machines for use when making buttonholes? Wouldn't that make it possible to make the home sewing machine easier to move around? My husband just ordered the Qinique 15 R and Continuum Frame for my birthday in a couple of days. Your videos are great I can't wait for my machine to arrive so I can get started.
A cover plate isn't necessary. Lowering the stitch length to the lowest setting isn't even really necessary because there's a gap between the machine and the quilt and it's not able to pull against you unless you press rulers or something down to the surface.
What is the length of your Pfaff? I've spoken with Grace Company and according to their tests, this carriage will fit any machine up to the 16 inch sit down longarms. So I'd say - probably yes!
Would a Brother PQ1500SL be okay to use with this frame? The reason I ask, is that it does not have the start/stop button, you have to use the foot peddle. I am trying to figure out if that would impede the movement of the platform the machine is seated on, as the cord would be at the rear. There is only so much cord length and the traveling I am imagining could cause a problem. Thank you for these videos, I did not know this frame existed, I would love to get one and I would use my ‘big boy’ as I call my PQ1500SL.
Yes, you can use a Brother 1500 - they are very popular machines to use on this frame. It is also compatible with our Sure Stitch Regulator which means you won't have to use the foot pedal. The power cord simply needs to be accessible as you can always add an extension cord if needed.

Can the strap/clamps on the back bar be used on other long arm frames? I have a Babylock Coronet and these may be just what I need for my queen size quilt projects for that extra bulk. Thanks!

Hi, I recently was given a Q-Zone Hoop Frame with a Q’Nique 15R machine (it’s not together yet in my sewing room). Is it necessary to have a speed controller for my new machine? I’ve never used a long arm or a mid arm before (total newbie, beginner). Wish me luck on my new endeavor.
Which Juki machine are you using? I have the Juki HZL F600. I’m wondering if the frame would work with my machine. I really enjoy watching your videos.
Yep, this is also a Juki F600 so it will work well. But you will only have around 5 inches to quilt in. You can always upgrade and switch to a longarm in the future so keep that in mind too!
I’ve see a lot of quilters set their foot pedal on top of their handles or mount it using a phone bicycle clamp. There are other options, but it is a lot easier to use a Speed Controller or Stitch Regulator on a quilting frame.
Leah, I just got the Q hoop frame from Grace. Question, I'm using my baby lock jazz 2, can the speed Control work on my machine? I want the speed Control as well. Thank you
Can you switch the control on the handle to the other side for left handers vs. right handers? Can you do ruler work with this set up?.. This is a neat idea...but what a lot of work to unclamp the white bars, unclamp the black clamp thingies, roll, and clamp every time you need to advance to the next row...I could stitch in the ditch this smaller quilt, prob. a lot faster...
Yes, most definitely. The Speed Controller is just attached with velcro so you can strap it anywhere you want it to go. Yes, I've been playing with ruler quilting and it works great on this machine because there's plenty of space around the needle for the ruler to rest. If you didn't have as much space, you might have to pick up a ruler base. As for speed, I've been experimenting with this and I do think this is faster, but it is more fiddly and the size of the machine and frame will impact your overall design. I find it fascinating to learn more about these different quilting possibilities and seeing where we can go with it!
Thanks for doing this. Will help get me started. I wish for a bit more info on getting my home machine set up. I am assuming use free motion set up with any of my free motion feet. You have the ruler foot on in one video and I think a spring foot in another. Choice? Reason? Also the size of the needle?
Yep, any free motion quilting foot or ruler foot will be fine. Just experiment and see which one gives you the visibility and capability you like. You can't use rulers with non-ruler feet for example so if that's something you want to do, I'd use a ruler foot. As for needles, the normal size you use for free motion quilting or piecing. Again, this is going to be different for every machine so you'll have to test to figure out what works best for you. If the thread is breaking a lot, go up a size in needle.
I just bought this for my Husqvarna machine. My question is do the feed dogs need to be lowered when you are using the stitch regulator? Also, in my testing my stsiches are not even and I can see the bottom thread on the top of my quilt how should I fix this? I am new to this type of quilting. Donyou have to pull the thread to the top of the quilt before starting to quilt?

Leah, I just purchased a pfaff grand quilter machine with a inspira longarm quilting frame used, and my thread keeps breaking, it has a cruise control stitch regulator on it, I have tried different threads and different size needles, but my tread keeps breaking. what kind of thread do you suggest
First thing - stop changing so many different things at once. Only change one thing at a time, take the time to test, then change one more thing, etc. You can only troubleshoot an issue if you limit it to one change at a time. Now first check is your threading. Make sure you've threaded the machine properly. If not, thread it properly and test again. Next check the height of the frame over your machine. If you have too much space between the back rail of the frame and your machine bed, it can cause these issues. Lower that back rail and test again. Is the quilt pulled very tight on the frame? You want a bit of bounce over the fabric. If it's pulled way too tight it will cause skipped stitches. Some threads prefer to feed straight up on a spool spindle and then into the machine. If it's already feeding this way, it may still be feeding too fast. Use a thread net to hug the thread spool and limit how fast it spins off the spool. That is what I can think of right off the top of my head! You need to work at this one thing at a time. And please don't try to troubleshoot when you're angry or frustrated. I know that sounds silly, but you really will create just as many issues as you fix!
This machine had an 8 inch throat space. I'd recommend 8 inches or more in order to have enough space to comfortably play. Otherwise you may feel like you spend more time shifting and clamping the quilt than quilting.
Well, you could put an embroidery machine on it, but it wouldn't be able to embroider unless the embroidery module could somehow connect to the quilt to lock the machine to the quilt on the frame. Then it could theoretically stitch designs using the frame without an embroidery hoop. Since that is WAY beyond the way this frame (or any embroidery machine) is designed to work, I should add that our QTC4 automation software is compatible with this frame so you can use it to select designs and program the machine to stitch automatically. That is kind of like turning your machine and frame into a giant embroidery machine!
I am using a Juki f600 on a Cutie frame and getting quite a bit of skipped stitches. I have tried the usual solutions of rethreading, new needle, raising feed dogs, lowering free motion foot. Some improvement but still skipping. Any other suggestions?
Have you tried a different thread? If a particular thread is giving you fits, you can absolutely use something different. I personally love Isacord because it has far less breaks and is very thin and strong. leahday.com/products/isacord-thread

I don't, but then again, I don't drop my feed dogs when I'm free motion quilting with the machine in a table either. Try it both ways and see what works for you!
You don't have to baste it as securely as for a home machine - as in pinning every 4 inches. You do need to layer the 3 layers together flat and smooth. I find this easiest with a big table top. If you don't have the ability to do that easily, I would advise a Continuum Frame instead. That frame works differently from this and allows you to layer the backing, batting and quilt top on the frame itself - much faster and easier!

This is fascinating, Leah! I had no idea such a product existed. I've been looking for a new sewing machine which has a large throat on which I'll be able to do FMQ (maybe a Brother PQ1500SL or a Juki TL2010Q which is unfortunately double+ the price of the Brother). I also purchased the Grace q zone hoop frame because of limited space in my sewing room and really like it. Due to neck issues I quilt standing up. I initially put my Bernina 750 on this frame. I found that having the presser foot facing sideways to where I was standing somewhat disorienting and I actually couldn't see the needle as the Bernina has such a large head. Plus it is too heavy to move back and forth when piecing. I then purchased the Qnique 15R and have followed your videos on this machine. Thank you so much for these as well. All in all, I am very happy with both purchases.

I purchased this frame and a Juki Tl 2000 QI at Christmas and have found it was exactly what I needed. I quilted on a Gammil for years at our church and at one point had set to purchase one but didn’t want to give up that big foot print of space in my sewing space or the funds when I was just going to be quilting personally and not professionally. Last year I went to a quilt convention and saw the hoop frame and knew that was really what was best for me. I on the fence about this frame. I think it's what I want but I'm not sure about having to shift the quilt. I have a Juki 2010 and was wondering what the width of the quilting area would be and is having to move the quilt a lot of effort. My goal would be to buy a long arm machine down the road.

Hi Linda - That is definitely something to think about. I shot a time lapse of the entire quilting process that I will share next week. I think 36-inches is about the maximum width you should depend on if you don't want to shift to the left and right. Keep in mind you CAN shift to the left and right so you can quilt any width of quilt, but yes, this will add more effort and time to the shifting process. I think the Q-zone is a good fit for quilters that want to add a longarm later because it splits up the cost. Please keep thinking about it and let me know if you have video suggestions!

It took until January for all the parts and accessories to trickle in and I haven't set it up yet. I'm going to use my Janome Horizon 9400 QCP with it. I ordered my Q-Zone from you Leah, and it arrive a week later, I just got it set up and put my Janome Horizon 9400QCP (29 lb) machine on the carriage. YAHOO! This frame is so much fun.. I am having a few tension troubles as I first sat down all was good but I left for a few minutes and came back to the quilt I was working on and the bobbin thread has been pulling up when I turn corners. However, this frame makes quilting on a home machine terrific, Thank you so much Leah!! I look forward to mare videos.
Whoo hoo! I'm so excited for you! Slow down in those corners a bit and make sure you're getting a stitch or two into those spots before changing direction. Most likely that's a movement thing - not really a tension issue. Slow down especially in those direction changes and I'm sure you'll see improvement.
Hi Karen. I too put my Janome 9400 on the hoop. Did you use the foot pedal or the stop/go button? I tried the pedal but found the cord a little too short and getting in the way.

I am looking for something not as expensive, does not take up much foot print and easier to quilt then struggling to move the larger quilts on the home machine. I am interested in seeing what the stitches look like and wondered on your next video if you could have a close up look at the stitches. I have a dream frame which is very close to this one. I have tried standing up but I didn't like it because the visibility isn't good. I like sitting down and it works very well for me. My lap sized quilt is wider than the frame so trying to do the continuous line of quilting across the top seems problematic. I need to stop quilting across, move the quilt over, just to reach the small remaining section of quilt for that one line of stitching...to secure it, even though it makes perfect sense to do it. Any suggestions please? I enjoy all your videos and I can't thank you enough for sharing them. Wonderful quilting tips & tricks are SO helpful. You ARE awesome, Leah!
Well, you could stitch that one narrow section down one side of the quilt, then hoop and quilt in the opposite direction (perpendicular) across. Or you can advance over every time. The side-to-side advances are a pain on the hoop frame and do add time to the process. My best advice is to quilt this project the best you can, then quilt more and bigger quilts. The right flow and process will be found with time and practice!

I found the space shrank slightly by the end of the quilt. At the beginning I had 5 inches of space. By the end it was more like 3 1/2. There are many designs that can work with this width and look great, but it is a limitation due to the size of the machine.

good Morning Leah, I just purchased the cutie frame from Grace. I was super excited to use my Elna Excellence 720pro until i came across a youtube video that indcated that i could damage the needle bar of the my multi needle posiiton machine. Have you had a problem with issues ?

Thanks Lissa! This machine has an 8.5 inch throat. Generally I subtract 4 inches for rails and quilt, so I had around 4.5 inches of vertical quilting space x 32 inches horizontal - not much to be creative in, but it will give you an idea of frame quilting and if this style works for you!

Great suggestion Michelle! I heard something similar from another quilter about placing a block of wood to the back to stop the machine from slipping back so far. I like the block of wood idea rather than moving the machine because then I wouldn't have space for my spool stand.

Starting watching your video as I’m interested in purchasing a quilting frame. You mentioned leaving your machine on the left because of the direction the feed dogs pull your fabric but aren’t you supposed to drop your feed dogs when doing free motion quilting?
Leah, thank you so much for doing these videos. I have watched all your videos for this frame multiple times. I feel this frame is a solution for me as my space is very limited. I purchased a Brother PQ1500SL to put on the frame. It is a very solid machine and I think it was a good choice. BUT I am very UNSUCCESSFUL using the machine on the frame. Control speed is my problem I think. I get huge loops on the underneath side when I try stippling or simple loops. I don't think tension is the problem because I can sew straight lines with an acceptable (not perfect) stitch. I have practiced hours and hours, days and days. If I knew that a stitch regulator would fix the problem, I would gladly pay for the upgrade. However, I hesitate to put more money into my setup without feeling confident that will solve the problem. Do you have input for me to consider in making this decision.
Great question Sandra! Let's try to troubleshoot this issue together: First thing, only change one thing on your machine / frame at any time. If you change more than one thing, you will not know which thing you changed made the difference. Also keep notes so if this issue crops up again, you can refer to your notes to fix it.
So huge loops underneath and that's only appearing with Stippling or Loopy Line, but not appearing with straight lines. Yes, that does sound like a speed control issue. Here's what to try: Mark Stippling in a row across your quilt with a fabric marker. Quilt and follow the line carefully and go as slowly as you can without making super tiny stitches. You may need to use the speed control dial on your machine (if you have one) to slow it down slightly as you stitch.
Now check the back. If you see improvement then yes, either practice or a regulator will help.
If this made no noticeable improvement, you should check the threading on your machine. Chances are you're missing a guide somewhere on the top.
But if the loops are only appearing within certain places, then that is probably a movement issue. Go back to the quilt and try again, not focusing on those specific curves where the loops appeared. SLOW DOWN especially in those shapes. Those areas are where your hands want to speed up and rush because that's a movement that feels good and natural to you.
Keep going from there, more practice, more patience. And yes, you can use your frame right now to stitch straight lines on your quilt, so do that! Don't beat yourself up just because the curvy designs have issues. Stitch straight lines for now until you get the hang of moving the machine with more control.

How heavy of a home machine will this frame support? I can definitely see where having a 15 or 17 inch machine would be beneficial, even on this smaller frame.
I don't think the weight is the issue, as much as the size. The frame is very sturdy and I haven't experienced any vibration issues. From what I understand, any machine up to the 16 inch longarms will fit on the top carriage.
Excellent video. My frame I ordered from you arrived today (yay) but my machine is still in transit. So I put on the singer 9960 I have just to play. I’m so glad you ran into the bar on this video, because I did the same thing. I have not tried the leaders yet, as I was trying to save throat space. I had about 3.25 in of space to work with my singer and no leaders.
No offense to the Grace company, but the lady that does the videos for pinning the leaders has a voice I find challenging to listen to. If you are able to do a video for pinning leaders for the Qzone that would help. Maybe you already have and I don’t know. Looking forward to more videos.
I am not 100% with my FMQ so I used a FullLine Stencil tonight and it worked great with the frame. I had to mark tick marks across the width of the quilt to make sure I stayed in the safe zone.

I have bought the Qzone hoop frame and am looking forward to quilting my first quilt on it. I prefer to use leaders, but the ones that came with it are rather long and unwieldy for a small quilt, and I was thinking of making a smaller set of leaders that are just the width of the frame itself for when I'm doing my Project Linus quilts. I was thinking I could just make a sleeve in which to insert a dowel or something similar. How difficult is it to work with that super long leader that came with the frame for such a small quilt?
If you're not planning on making huge quilts, you definitely don't need to leave the leader cloth the length it is. I would cut it in half, or even in thirds, trim off the thick cord that's in the middle of the thick part of the leader cloth, and then hem up the side. It should be a big deal and then you will have 3 top leaders.
As for using the wide leader cloth with a skinny quilt, it's not a big deal, but it drapes off both sides and if you don't need it, you just don't need it!
I do plan to do some larger ones. Thats why i was thinking of making myself shorter leaders specifically for my charity quilts that are smaller. But that is definitely a good suggestion for those not planning any large ones at all.
I want one of these frames so much. Being disabled, sewing/quilting is the only thing left that I am able to do. My Brother 2800d doesn't allow me to set the stitch length to zero. 1 is the lowest I can go. The quilt doesn't move freely under the foot. It just cost me $200 to have it repaired because of this. I also keep getting the "eyelashing " when going left or right when meandering.
Is there an inexpensive machine that would work with this frame?
In your case, I would drop the feed dogs and see what happens. It also sounds like the quilting foot you're using is resting too low on the machine. See if you can adjust it so it rests higher on the quilt and doesn't squish the layers together so much. As for a machine, you'll need to do research online to find a machine you find affordable for your budget. Yes, always make sure the foot is down! Otherwise it has no tension which means very ugly stitches! I haven't tried the regulator yet, but it's on my list!

No, I don't have the Bernina 770 on the compatibility list so it won't work with the Sure Stitch Regulator. And no, generally you will have 3-4 inches less quilting space than harp space because the rail and clamps reduce your quilting space. So if your harp is 11 inches long, you will have around 7 inches of vertical quilting space x the length of the frame.

You stated that your feed dogs want to pull the fabric so you should quilt left to right. But aren't your feed dogs down? If they are down you could move any direction not just left to right...
I'm sorry I wasn't clear about that. It's important to remember that a home machine likes to quilt from left to right generally because you feed fabric from front to back (same movement). Whether the feed dogs are up or down, this is still the direction most machines will stitch best in. I hope that makes sense - it's not pulling or causing issues. It's simply the overall direction I'm moving as I quilt stippling over the quilt.
Hi Leah! I am in awe over this frame! I had no idea something like this existed! I have a Brother Innovis 3050 Quilting Series machine and love it! But I would love the long arm ability to quilt. Does this frame come with the handles and remote box for starting/stopping stitching, and everything you are using here (except for the sewing machine, of course) and would I be able to use My Brother 3050 with it? Use a filled bobbin on top instead of a spool of thread and you can tell when the bottom bobbin is getting low.
So, the harp of a domestic is smaller as yours is so I can see problems when quilting a queen/king size quilt. I would think that there would be too much bulk in the harp/throat of the machine.
For the grace speed control it doesn’t say it’s for the Juki f series. You have an f 600 correct ?

I have a Pfaff Expression 3.0 that I have made generous throw-size quilts on, but the struggle dealing with the bulk of the quilt sent me on a mission for a sitdown mid arm. I bought a Baby Lock Tiara i and love the machine but still struggle with the bulk of moving the quilt rather than the machine. I even purchased bungee cords for suspending the quilt sandwich but still haven’t tackled anything larger than a throw. I love ruler work and have done quite a bit (such as your QAL Sunshine Sampler Quilt).
I’ve studied videos and blogs about long arms and I’m wondering if on the Qzone if keeping the quilt square is a problem with a larger quilt? Particularly a king size? Any thoughts?
BTW, I’ve measured my Tiara, and it should fit the machine carrier. Barely.
Right NOW the Tiara won't work because of the length, but we may have a work around available soon. Yes, I agree - I quilted for years with machines in tables and even with only 5 inches to play in this hoop frame, this feels easy!

Thalei Burke Where did you get the handlebars to put on the top of your machine? I'm new to FM quilting and just got a BabyLock and the Cutie frame. Love the machine but HATE the handlebars underneath the quilt bed.
Unfortunately that is the way the handles are designed on that frame. The frame I'm using in this video is the Q-Zone Hoop Frame and has a different way of setting the handles.
Great video!!!! Do you have any tips on how to make it more taunt on the sides of the quilt? I noticed my quilt is not that taunt .
Use the bungee cords on the sides of the frame to pull the sides of the quilt tighter. I didn't use them in this video, but they can be very helpful.

Unfortunately no, this Juki has changed electronics and quilters have since had issues getting a speed controller to work with it.

Leah is there anything we could put on the back bar so that if we go off we don’t hit the plastic with out needle bar like that. I was thinking of a pool noodle but I think it would take up too much room.

What is the throat space on the machine you are using, Leah? Thanks for another super informative video!
The distance from the back of the machine to the needle is 8 inches. With the back bar of the frame in the arm, this left 5 inches of quiltable space in the frame. Then as the quilt took up more space, it reduced further to 3 1/2-inches at the end. Of course, the bigger the machine, the more space you have, but please keep this in mind.

Hi Leah, I bought the cutie frame almost a year ago, got it all set up and put my Juki on it. Within the very first 30 seconds I broke my needle! I haven't touched it since. I did replace the needle plate with one that has a larger opening for the needle but I still need to give it another try. The quilt didn't seem to be laying completely flat when it's stretched out in the frame. I thought maybe that's why the needle broke?? I want to try again but was concerned I was doing it wrong. Does this happen to you?
Most likely you were moving the machine too fast, but not running the speed (needle bouncing up and down) fast enough. I would slow down the movement of your hands on the handles - slower than you think, and mash your foot on your foot pedal a lot harder than you think - pedal to the metal!
What about using the smooth plate that covers the feed dogs, which usually comes with regular sewing machines for use when making buttonholes? Wouldn't that make it possible to make the home sewing machine easier to move around?
My husband just ordered the Qinique 15 R and Continuum Frame for my birthday in a couple of days. Your videos are great I can't wait for my machine to arrive so I can get started.
A cover plate isn't necessary. Lowering the stitch length to the lowest setting isn't even really necessary because there's a gap between the machine and the quilt and it's not able to pull against you unless you press rulers or something down to the surface.

What is the length of your Pfaff? I've spoken with Grace Company and according to their tests, this carriage will fit any machine up to the 16 inch sit down longarms. So I'd say - probably yes!

Would a Brother PQ1500SL be okay to use with this frame? The reason I ask, is that it does not have the start/stop button, you have to use the foot peddle. I am trying to figure out if that would impede the movement of the platform the machine is seated on, as the cord would be at the rear. There is only so much cord length and the traveling I am imagining could cause a problem. Thank you for these videos, I did not know this frame existed, I would love to get one and I would use my ‘big boy’ as I call my PQ1500SL.
Yes, you can use a Brother 1500 - they are very popular machines to use on this frame. It is also compatible with our Sure Stitch Regulator which means you won't have to use the foot pedal. The power cord simply needs to be accessible as you can always add an extension cord if needed.

Unfortunately the straps are built into the bar so that is something that can't be detatched and the clamps are only sold with this frame.

No, the Qnique 15R has a stitch regulator and encoders. You should be all set!

Yep, this is also a Juki F600 so it will work well. But you will only have around 5 inches to quilt in. You can always upgrade and switch to a longarm in the future so keep that in mind too!

I’ve see a lot of quilters set their foot pedal on top of their handles or mount it using a phone bicycle clamp. There are other options, but it is a lot easier to use a Speed Controller or Stitch Regulator on a quilting frame.

Can you switch the control on the handle to the other side for left handers vs. right handers? Can you do ruler work with this set up?.. This is a neat idea...but what a lot of work to unclamp the white bars, unclamp the black clamp thingies, roll, and clamp every time you need to advance to the next row...I could stitch in the ditch this smaller quilt, prob. a lot faster...
Yes, most definitely. The Speed Controller is just attached with velcro so you can strap it anywhere you want it to go. Yes, I've been playing with ruler quilting and it works great on this machine because there's plenty of space around the needle for the ruler to rest. If you didn't have as much space, you might have to pick up a ruler base.
As for speed, I've been experimenting with this and I do think this is faster, but it is more fiddly and the size of the machine and frame will impact your overall design. I find it fascinating to learn more about these different quilting possibilities and seeing where we can go with it!
A video or tutorial on how to use cloth leaders with the hoop frame would be great. I haven't been able to find anything about it.

Thanks for doing this. Will help get me started. I wish for a bit more info on getting my home machine set up. I am assuming use free motion set up with any of my free motion feet. You have the ruler foot on in one video and I think a spring foot in another. Choice? Reason? Also the size of the needle?
Yep, any free motion quilting foot or ruler foot will be fine. Just experiment and see which one gives you the visibility and capability you like. You can't use rulers with non-ruler feet for example so if that's something you want to do, I'd use a ruler foot.
As for needles, the normal size you use for free motion quilting or piecing. Again, this is going to be different for every machine so you'll have to test to figure out what works best for you. If the thread is breaking a lot, go up a size in needle.

I just bought this for my Husqvarna machine. My question is do the feed dogs need to be lowered when you are using the stitch regulator? Also, in my testing my stsiches are not even and I can see the bottom thread on the top of my quilt how should I fix this? I am new to this type of quilting. Donyou have to pull the thread to the top of the quilt before starting to quilt?

Leah, I just purchased a pfaff grand quilter machine with a inspira longarm quilting frame used, and my thread keeps breaking, it has a cruise control stitch regulator on it, I have tried different threads and different size needles, but my tread keeps breaking. what kind of thread do you suggest
First thing - stop changing so many different things at once. Only change one thing at a time, take the time to test, then change one more thing, etc. You can only troubleshoot an issue if you limit it to one change at a time.
Now first check is your threading. Make sure you've threaded the machine properly. If not, thread it properly and test again.
Next check the height of the frame over your machine. If you have too much space between the back rail of the frame and your machine bed, it can cause these issues. Lower that back rail and test again.
Is the quilt pulled very tight on the frame? You want a bit of bounce over the fabric. If it's pulled way too tight it will cause skipped stitches.
Some threads prefer to feed straight up on a spool spindle and then into the machine. If it's already feeding this way, it may still be feeding too fast. Use a thread net to hug the thread spool and limit how fast it spins off the spool.
That is what I can think of right off the top of my head! You need to work at this one thing at a time. And please don't try to troubleshoot when you're angry or frustrated. I know that sounds silly, but you really will create just as many issues as you fix!
Do you use any tension on the two sides of your quilt or just let them flop? Grace provides some clamps for the sides.
I wasn't using the side clamps in this video. I did begin using them after this quilt and like them quite a bit!
Leah, what is the throat space on the machine you are using on the Q frame?
This machine had an 8 inch throat space. I'd recommend 8 inches or more in order to have enough space to comfortably play. Otherwise you may feel like you spend more time shifting and clamping the quilt than quilting.
I wonder if there is an embroidery machine that would work with this quilting frame.
Well, you could put an embroidery machine on it, but it wouldn't be able to embroider unless the embroidery module could somehow connect to the quilt to lock the machine to the quilt on the frame. Then it could theoretically stitch designs using the frame without an embroidery hoop.
Since that is WAY beyond the way this frame (or any embroidery machine) is designed to work, I should add that our QTC4 automation software is compatible with this frame so you can use it to select designs and program the machine to stitch automatically. That is kind of like turning your machine and frame into a giant embroidery machine!

I am using a Juki f600 on a Cutie frame and getting quite a bit of skipped stitches. I have tried the usual solutions of rethreading, new needle, raising feed dogs, lowering free motion foot. Some improvement but still skipping. Any other suggestions?
Have you tried a different thread? If a particular thread is giving you fits, you can absolutely use something different. I personally love Isacord because it has far less breaks and is very thin and strong. leahday.com/products/isacord-thread

Hi Pat - You can replace the elastic straps if needed. Just contact Grace Company or your dealer for help with that.

You can purchase extra bobbins and needles from the dealer you purchased your home machine.
Do I have to baste my layers before I load it on my Q Zone frame?
You don't have to baste it as securely as for a home machine - as in pinning every 4 inches. You do need to layer the 3 layers together flat and smooth. I find this easiest with a big table top. If you don't have the ability to do that easily, I would advise a Continuum Frame instead. That frame works differently from this and allows you to layer the backing, batting and quilt top on the frame itself - much faster and easier!
I see that marking the quilt how far up or down would be helpful so you don't hit the frame with your needle bar. You just stay between the lines.

This is fascinating, Leah! I had no idea such a product existed. I've been looking for a new sewing machine which has a large throat on which I'll be able to do FMQ (maybe a Brother PQ1500SL or a Juki TL2010Q which is unfortunately double+ the price of the Brother). It's nice to know that a frame exists to turn it into a pseudo-longarm machine. Thanks for showing us your practice/learning, and for honestly pointing out some valid pros and cons.
