Story we re following from The Athletic:
A year after defying all expectations and heading into the All-Star break as one of baseball’s most exciting and promising young teams in 2023, the 2024 version of the Cincinnati Reds has defied the high expectations with meandering mediocrity.
The Reds are hardly alone in that way - the entire National League aside from the Philadelphia Phillies could potentially be described in that manner.
But this Reds team had been a trendy sleeper pick in the NL after the breakout success of multiple young players last season. In 2024, they’ve been closer to asleep.
The Reds enter the All-Star break fourth in the National League Central despite being the only team other than the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers with a positive run differential.
For as poorly as the team’s season has gone, it is only 8 games out of the division and 3 out of the third and final wild card.
So, what have we learned from the Cincinnati Reds heading into the All-Star break?
Elly De La Cruz is a superstar
Let’s start here because when the Reds are mentioned anywhere, it usually begins with De La Cruz.
The shortstop has done nothing but live up to the promise he showed as a rookie. Not only is he headed to Texas for the All-Star Game, there’s an argument that he should be starting for the National League.
Reds' Elly De La Cruz headed to All-Star Game for first time
The 22-year-old has continued to steal bases, hit bombs and generally amaze. Perhaps even more impressive has been his consistent and gradual improvements. De La Cruz has lowered his strikeout rate and improved his walk rate and his approach at the plate. The switch-hitter has also upped his numbers from the right side, making it more difficult to retire him by simply bringing in a left-handed pitcher.
The No. 1 thing De La Cruz has done is post. He’s started at shortstop in all but two of the Reds’ games this season and played in all but one. While fans and media will fawn over his flashy feats on the field, it’s his everyday play that is appreciated most inside the team’s clubhouse and front office.
As part of its rebuild, Nick Krall, the Reds’ president of baseball operations, and his front office prioritized middle infielders, stockpiling shortstops to supplement De La Cruz. That depth was challenged in spring with an injury to Matt McLain, who started 52 games there as a rookie last season, another to top shortstop prospect Edwin Arroyo and an 80-game suspension to Noelvi Marte.

I watched a full breakdown on Burn's pitching. The take away I got was that his motion actually took pressure off his arm.
