Starfleet has the fastest development team in history. "We need a totally new ship class using brand new technologies, can you have the design ready for the next meeting?".
I figure folks are designing new ships all the time. It's a society of meganerds with all the time in the world and which encourages people to not be afraid, and holodecks where you can basically "make" a ship without cost. Just like Ensign Kim in that one episode where he imagines creating a new runabout class. So you just take a promising line of design and have planets worth of scientists and engineers bang on it till you get a finished product.
The way I see it is the federation is very adaptable with technology they currently have (especially the stuff that's primarily human designed) because when they design a starship they might have a flagship "class" like the Galaxy but they design it in such a way where modularity is built in. So one "project" lets them build many ships from the same parts. In many ways the Galaxy and related ships are the peak of this modularity where Galaxy class ships were launched with about 35% of their hull being empty space on the assumption that it would be filled and recycled as needed for the mission. What the upshot of that was is if you wanted to design a new torpedo boat or whatever, you had a large library of modular parts both boneyarded, but remanufacturable, and new that could be repurposed for the new ship (this is literally the in universe canon explanation for kitbashing). However due to the Borg and then Dominion threat Starfleet shifted to building warships in all but name, and part of this was sacrificing some of that modularity with more protective purpose built unibody designs like the Akira, Steamrunner, Oslo, Sovereign, and of course the Defiant. The Defiant (and if we want to include beta materials, the Sao Palo etc) was basically the Pinnacle of this non-modular design completely sacrificing it for protection and speed. It's design was completely unibody with protected nacells and all unnecessary interior space was cut even turbolifts to make the craft as small as possible. It was designed to go fast and eat ass. However as we saw in DS9 the class especially early on was plagued with issues due to this philosophy and how divergent it was from the norm of Starfleet design. Chief O'Brien being a brilliant engineer is credited as the reason the OG Defiant basically managed to not rip itself to shreds and his suggestions were why later ships like the valiant were less temperamental but also less capable (ie they toned down the warp core which reduced it's firepower somewhat but made it much less likely to blow itself apart due to EPS overload). It's also notible that other "Borg Killers" sacrified modularity for the same purpose but not as completely and to varying degrees. The design language of the Akira, Steamrunner, and Oslo all sort of communicate just how much they were willing to drop with the Oslo being the closest to the Defiant but still pretty far away from it's complete sacrifice. All of this said though, when Starfleet embarks on a highly modular design like the constellation or the galaxy it takes them decades in canon to move from design to first NCC launch. The galaxy project was canonically in some stage of development for 70 years (which is why the in universe initial lifetime for the Galaxy deep space explorer was supposed to be 100 years per ship before a refit was absolutely necessary, obviously the dominion war got in the way of that plan)! The constellation was 30. So they basically spend decades up front to be able to have that modularity which let's them "make a new design by next Tuesday"
One thing with the Achilles and similar ships might be that the designs are more of militarizing Federation vessels. Shifting from the multi-role craft that are common such as with the families, labs, and everything else that Starfleet packs in being removed for more power generation and weaponry. This also comes at a downside in that when the specific conflict ends, they end up discontinuing the production and attempt to convert them into more general purpose designs which they aren't as good at as other ships. The Achilles, in addition, is a rushed production, meaning that a lot of things are, probably, kludged together as best as possible from existing things... I can see it having the same kind of issues that the Premonition class would have had if they'd been more generally built... And the Premonition class is one that could make for an interesting thing to break down
The Premonition was a regular ship( probably a sovereign) quickly Refitted to be a time ship. So it probably has all the required amenities but the time ship refit was probably a lot of work as the drive is external not internal.
@@barrybend7189 It's smaller than a Sovereign there. It also has a more unique hull profile. It also has other ships of the class with both the sequel and available in other things
@@AzraelThanatos the saucer could have come from a Sovereign class as obviously the secondary hull and nacelles needed to be redesigned to allow for use of the temporal drive module.
I loved this game! I really liked the ability to focus on a strategy entirely based on boarding parties. Targeting shields, then transporting boarding parties to capture ships. I would request fewer ships to use on a mission but use the spare points to cram as many crew into those ships. Every mission would start with my ships getting blasted (since I had fewer ships) but would proceed with boarding ship after ship. Borg have nothing on me. I'd complete endgame missions with 3-4 times as many ships as I started with. I'd imagine Ross or Sisko wondering about this insane Starfleet officer that had a mostly Cardassian/Dominion/Breen fleet in the final push to Cardassia.
Its a very different take on the RTS genre, if you have any interest in these types of games i would suggest you see about getting an emulator and trying it again. -Editor Troy
Oh I loved that game and the Achilles is one of my favorite Fed starships! I was just thinking about it while playing STO a few weeks ago. Wondering why is hasn't been featured in anything other than the one game. It's a game most people have never played or heard of so maybe it was just ignored or unknown.
It actually very simple why it, among other designs haven't shown up. Star Trek copyright is a eldritch abomination cause of the CBS Paramount split. The game came out during the time when that was at it worse. So many Trek stuff that came out in the late 90s early 00s is locked behind alot of legal junk. Basically even if they know about it the STO devs may not be allowed to use it cause of reasons.
Looking at the Achilles Class it looks like an Akira Class Starship mated with an Intrepid Class Starship based on the design and the way the ship looks.
You guys are awesome! I have requested this ship gets in own video on quite a few channels and you guys heard me and provided. Would be sweet if STO picked up the Achilles.
Right?! Especially if they made her the overpowered ship, she was in the game intro with 8 weapon slots, an experimental weapon slot for her micro-torpedo launcher. 4 slots for universal consoles, 4 for engineering, 2 for science, 3 for tactical. She would easily replace the Odyssey/Kelvin and SNW Connies as my go-to ships to play.
Its one of the ships that I have been watching for quite some time, wondering as you said if it will be picked up by a new tv show, something that would focus on after the war...
The Achilles class is my absolute favorite ship in Star Trek. Too bad the license for the ship and it’s design were lost between CBS and Paramount which is why I think we never saw it anywhere outside the game.
My guess is with the importance of the white you would need several achilies class ships. Cause like security would incredibly tight. So like say 8 to 10 of these ships would probavly give you enough to handle white facilities!
As much as I love the different Federation Starfleet vessels that I've purchased, in the 11 years, that I've been running Star Trek Online, I have always wanted to see the U.S.S. Achilles, find its way into Star Trek Online!
I loved this ship, even added the Mod of it to Star Trek Armada II back when there was those glorious websites Armada-File Front(?) and Armada Fleet Command. I wish Cryptic bought the rights to her for Star Trek Online cause I would have bought and made her my go to ship instead of the Odyssey Class, Kelvin and SNW Connies.
@Trek Central Speaking of ships that appear in different Cannon Alpha's I would love to see you dig up information on the Enterprise G from Bridge Commander (it is a mod but a very, very well done one.) and see what we can't come up with.
