Loved Olga! She really was the Little Lilia! Fell in love with her ever since 1998 Jr Euros. She really carried this team in my opinion more than Karpenko did. I remember watching her in practice sessions at competitions work very very hard. Endless repetitions! Too bad after 2000 she couldn't keep up with the change to the CoP.
She had decent SVs in 2001, which was rare, so it's unfortunate she retired after Ghent. The 97-00 rules were skewed toward teams/gymnasts with 2 strong VTs, which had never been the case before/after. I don't think it was a terrible move, since we saw the following for the ~1st time in WAG that quad: 2.5TY, 1.5TT, 2TT, Tucked Rudi, FLO 1/1, FLO 1.5, Laidout Pod, Khorkina II.
But, it put a gymnast like Roschupkina at a disadvantage. She'd have been fine in 93-96/01-04 with her Piked Lucconi (same SV as 1.5TY, for ex), losing 0.1-0.2 on the field. But in 97-00, she'd avg. around 9.2-9.3 with her 9.7 Tucked Lucconi, which was 0.3-0.4 behind gymnasts like Karpenko, Olaru, Yang Yun, Dong Fangxiao, Simona Amanar, etc. who'd avg. 9.5 -9.6 with 9.8+9.9 SVs.
Both Roschupkina and Karpenko were typically great on UB+BB in team events, but I think all 8 of Karpenko's TF scores in 99+00 counted, whereas Roschupkina's fall from BB was enough to cost UKR bronze in 99, where she also crashed VT and didn't even perform FX in TF. And, in Sydney, this was her best showing on FX, going OOB all 3 times (QF, TF, AA) and falling in TF.
@@jjs5056 Yeah, they got so close in ‘99, but at least they were awarded the bronze 12 years later after China was stripped of it.

Ukrainian coaches should have taken one skill out on every gymnasts floor routine so they stay in bounds
I hope you realize that it wasn't just Ukraine having OOB issues at this meet. I'm pretty sure if I remember reading 60-65% of the gymnasts went OOB during Qualifications of the whole competition.
