Tommy I get that you are trying to make lemonade out of lemons but this is hilarious! This is just another mall crawler in a long line of mall crawlers.
Exaaaactly!! The only SUV in this class that has “decent” off road performance, is the Honda Pilot Trail Sport. And even then, it would never compare to a Jeep or even a 4Runner off road.
Like the new chevy equinox off-road trim with maple syrup interior.
@@lennygarrison6836 It's not trying to be a jeep or a 4runner, it's also nicer on the inside and I'm saying this as a jeep owner.
90% of 4runner owners aren’t taking their truck off road. They’re overpaying for the idea. I’m thinking this vehicle is a darn good option for that market.
@@joshhealey9 exactly. That's why so many automakers are making "off-road" trims without capability. They know most people just want the look
Alex & Tommy together is such a treat
Just three minutes into this and the verbal gymnastics to avoid straight criticism of the vehicle and provide faint praise instead. 😍 “Looks more wild in person but not exactly the Rubicon trail”, “Not a soft roader either”, “clutch design a little controversial”, “no torque converter it slips in slow speed situations”.
Anyone who said you guys have an easy livelihood, didn’t watch this video. 😃
What a fun video. This car is such a mixed bag. It makes me think most buyers actually want a station wagon, but since we don't really have those in America you get an SUV.
Subaru Outback is a real last remaining wagon although it's officially a SUV.
Looks like a taller Ford Flex.
Lmao the flex is Land Rover squished down 😂
They're reaching content on this one.
This is hilarious.
FYI, it does not come stock with the skid plate. They added those for the event. I’ve looked at one and double checked the pics I took, and nope, no skid plate. It never mentions any skid plate on their website. However, it appears you will be able to buy one as an accessory, but they aren’t listed as one yet.
Needs a Mall Mode.
😂😂😂 don’t forget the supermarket mode. (Optional button)
Mall, Lululemon, Apple store, Starbucks, kids' dance practice, soccer field, and grandma's house.
Welcome back to TFL Alex (Auto Buyers Guide)
Is he gae?
I’d take my minivan with falken wild peaks through there without even thinking about it.
Being a fan of boxy designs and own a boxy VW Atlas this thing is a beauty! Love the design
The severest duty most of these will see is perhaps a gravel driveway. Regardless, a nice package that will initially sell well.
It’s a station wagon ! Love it
I’ve seen county roads rougher than this. Sign me up, I’ll take two: one to drive and one for parts. 😂
Oy Tommy, there be trolls under those bridges and they have been commenting here! To those trolls I'll say this, I need an awd box to carry the wheelchair and gear in my life. I am cautious of Hyundai/Kia but I am willing to look deeper at them. Quality issues can be fixed. This road was a fair example of my daily drive. If I need to go in a worse place my Crewmax can do it. Not every vehicle needs to drive the Moab.
This is TFL Off Road, not TFL Sunday Drive. This vehicle doesn't belong off road.
👍👏👏👏
@@Dwealdricsand is ‘off road’, heck my driveway is off road 😉
Telling the truth is only "trolling" to weak people wha hate honesty.
Well said
The trail and the vehicle were appropriately matched and we learned a lot about the new vehicle.
You could take a base Honda Civic down that trail.
My 1992 ford escort could make it thru that. This is a walmart/grocery store runner.
Great looking crossover in a sea of same old same old looking crossovers.
35mpg combined hybrid is the one to buy, with torque converter transmission.
Looks a lot better than previous Santa Fe, i wouldn't get it for any kind of offroading but it'd consider buying one if i was looking for an SUV type. Definitely looks more like the Ford Flex
Hardcore!
**sarcasm is obvious**
two fav youtubers in one video - good day!
Congratulations to you Tommy for the engagement btw!
Omg congrats Tommy!!
Yes we get it, some people don’t like Hyundai. I don’t prefer it but it looks good and is about %15 better off road. I’d take a %15 raise at my job haha
I'll never forgive toyota for the fact that my 2023 Tundra limited TRD PREMIUM came with a tiny plastic skid plate as the "off road engine skid plate". But my '19 Taco which wasn't even TRD had a metal one. Replaced that week one with RCI. Good on Hyundai for using a real one.
Highway all season tires are my biggest hang up with our Outback. I upgraded them, world of difference.
Wait til those clutch's get burned in.
How’s the ride height? Do you sit up high like a Traverse or Cherokee?
I can't wait to gee this on the TFL slip test and ultimately your off road course (Andre's Pit).
"No integrated recovery points"
Why, why do automakers keep doing this?
Recovery points arent just for offroad, they give you something to attatch straps to for on road during winter. Offroad is not the only time things get stuck.
I dubbed this the "Defender Sport". It's just a light off-road version of the LR Defender with some G-Wagon elements. People can say Flex all day long. But let's be real here, Flex was not a global car. So, it's foreign to others. The Defender is known globally. Therefore, most people will gravitate to the Defender design than the Flex.
My 2wd WJ can go there. Plus it’s paid for and ancient.
A Defender? I guess you meant Ford Flex...
Boxiness is Flex like, but the flex was more station wagon where as this is definitely a taller crossover and it’s SUV looks. Side profile and interior is 100% Defender and Range Rover
@@andrewsbbq 🗣 Say it louder for the clueless in the back!!
I can definitely see some Flex in this
Santa Flex😊
Santa DeFender Sport!
My Camry would make it through that.
Nice design ❤
The LCD dash is pretty cool actually! I didn't know it had that. I think it fits with it's 80's cyber-inspired look (at least that's what I think it is...).
I know this is in Franklin, TN, but where at in Franklin? Park name?
I'd love to hit these trails as I'm not too far from them in Knoxville.
Awesome SUV
Any specs on how they achieve the lift? Is it just spacers that any other non-XRT owner can install? Or is different shocks and struts too? Also curious about what that low hanging underbody cover is covering. Is it the gas tank?
This is what I was told from the dealer:
Looks like to convert the limited to XRT components wouldn’t just be the struts. It’s basically all the components being slightly different - control arms, bushings, sway bars, etc.
Plus, if you look at the tire size, it’s about a 0.25” larger diameter tire, so 1” of lift with bigger tires.
Was this the salesperson or parts dept? It’s sad that salespeople generally don’t know what they’re talking about. That makes little sense that control arms would need to be different for just an approximate 1.5” lift. You could get by with the same sway bars. Not sure how they interpret 1/4” larger diameter to 1” lift either.
Once parts info is online best way to confirm is by part numbers. My guess is it’s just a spacer and maybe different shock and strut rates.
@@bt5252I think they meant 1" of lift and also .25" larger diameter tires.
where in Franklin TN is this?
I would like to know as well!
Nice to see this car out in the wild but how does it do on those big speed bumps at the mall?
Every time I watch one of these “off road” SUV’s I get an image of an off road wrecker service coming to pull them out. Soft off roader at best. Maybe a muddy gravel road. This is not an off road vehicle. My 67 Bonneville would have gone thru that track😂😂😂😂
Could try settings in the 'my mode'
interesting design
On a track they specifically designed to make the car look good.
Hyundai design team making nice looking cars lately, cheers to them. I'd like to ask Hyundai to take off road more serious. For example, if they could make a version of this SUV, or maybe even a new model with 19 inches or more of suspension travel, they'd kill it. They have a HUGE opportunity to take market share from toyota if they can pull off a true off roader. Someone at toyota is smoking crack, their pricing for their new lineup of trucks/SUVs is RIDICULOUS. Sure many of us can afford it, BUT that's besides the point. We want value, not gimmicking crap that we really don't care about.
So well said.
Seriously considering trading in my 4runner for this. Let’s face it, most 4runner owners are overtrucked. I don’t need it’s features, and shitty MPG. This is a great option for folks like me who have an adventurous family and need enough versatility to take an SUV in the woods, to the crag, or to soccer practice. Great warranty too, which gives me some assurance, since I’ll potentially be leaving the unquestioned reliability of Toyota.
Honestly it does enough for most people who "overland".
The physical design is nice but I honestly feel like my 2019 Santa Fe XL is equally, if not more, capable. Was really intrigued when the new model was first announced but it really hasn’t seemed to improve much off road
this is funny because matts off road recovery just posted a vid of a sante fe stuck while off-roading.
I like the design and the off-roadish dress, but I think I could get my Golf up that dirt road.
There should be a way to transfer some of the mechanical components from the XRT to the Limited trim and above. Those cars could get a benefit with increased ground clearance... but reading at the comments, they're right. The Santa Fe isn't supposed to be an off-roader.
where is that road??? i will like to go in franklin Tn
Love that giant overhang of a nose on the front, just just begging to be ripped of during a Truck King Review(Hello Sequoia). This course is probably the toughest thing this car will ever see. That being said, I do like it. If those rear sear fold flat, It could be a fun camp in your car rig. But for the price, Theres alot better, IMO.
Looks like it will handle enough off road for 99.9% of actual buyers who may use it once in a blue moon to get to a campsite. Complaints here are from the same people who bitch that a Ridgeline or Ranger isn’t a truck because it doesn’t tow 14,000lbs when 99% of people need a truck to carry a handful of 2x4s, some potted plants or a mountain bike.
Not an off roader it's a cheap oversize wagon a outback is tougher
Which is a wagon.
Which is CVT
@@superkill30which is find
With those wheels and tires and that front bumper cover, the hardest off roading this thing will be able to do will be gravel roads. County maintained.
Great collab!
It's time for Hyundai to change their logo like Kia. I wouldn't mind seeing the new H shaped headlamp design as the new logo!
I could have driven that off road trail in my 2008 cobalt.
Reliability-wise, it definitely is not a baby Defender.
Where it belongs… since the vehicle in the thumbnail looks like it has a flat…. It does not belong there!!🤣
That was my first thought when I saw the thumbnail 😂
That’s a big NO from me. Wheels are too big, wet dual clutch is a no-go, and ground clearance can’t cut it. Needs a transfer case and true low gear. No off road mode. This is a Mall Crawler.
I would take my wife's Corolla on that track!!
The front is good-looking, and the rear end resembles a minivan. No Xterra or Landrover or 4Runner.
I have driven down actual roads that were more challenging than that trail...
When evaluating an SUV's capabilities, PLEASE keep in mind that 98.6% of SUV owners will never attempt any trail driving. You gotta ask yourself : Who was this vehicle intended for? Soccer Moms on the school and grocery runs... This model has enhanced off-piste capabilities, as do many "ruggadized" SUVs from other makers, and seems to be awesome value for the money... A good car with rugged good looks and lots of room. An ideal Urban Wagon!
I dont totally trust Hyundai/Kia. Too many reports of engines & transmissions dying plus an occasional fire 😂
still better choice than land rover imo...
@@Dankcatvacs True, anything’s better than Jeep or Landrover
Everyone trying to look like a Land Rover defender
Any improvements in engines or transmissions ?
No recovery points? Not even the toe bolts? The 2023 Kia Sportage doesn’t even have these, was so shocked after the purchase. Hope it doesn’t get stuck. No safe place to recover the vehicle that I can find….
At first glance i thought it was a Ford Flex!
My first thought was that it looks like a Ford Flex in the front and a Toyota minivan in the back.
Even 90 percent of people with real off-roaders don’t ever go off-road. Yet everyone wants an off-road trim
Where it belongs? I presume you mean to the mall, and in a few years to the salvage yard
You mean the Defender this vehicle is supposed to be a baby of?
@@Marius26-73yes it’s junk like defender
Hyundai makes grenades for engines. So yeah, straight to the junk yard after that warranty expires.
🤣
I know where it belongs
Literally any awd suv from 2000 and behind could’ve gone through this, arguably ANY vehicle as long as it fits
There is no skid plate and no option for one I can find.
A wet DCT DOES NOT belong in a family SUV, They did it for gas mileage but at a huge cost no matter how good it feels at the beginning.
Can you still start these with a thumb drive? Haha, Kia boys ready up!
It’s got push button start, so no. Only key ignition ones can be taken like that.
The real tests... How well does it haul a cup of starbucks? How easy is it to text while driving? How well does it handle while you have a herd of children screaming and wiping boogers on your expensive interior?
A pinto can do that trail wihout sweat
A pinto was built back when automakers understood that a Daily needs a little bit of clearance for whatever oddities you might encounter.
I think one of the biggest killers of modern sedans is that they sit really low now, and are basically useless in areas where the roads are not the smoothest. Heck, every day on my commute home from work I used to hear a sedan scrape just pulling off the stroad I was on and into one of the buisness parking lots, just because the driveway was at a bad angle. First was the chin, then a heartbeat later the rear bumper, maybe some tire screech as it struggled to get traction when the bumpers had contact.
@@AHungryHunkyremember early-mid 2000s Camrys? Those things sit way high off the ground compared to modern Toyota sedans (and sedans in general). But hey, gotta lay down for those CAFE II standards, right?
I can take my Cadillac through that mild trail.
y'all are giving this car too much coverage..
Oof. Same crappy drivetrain as our 23 Santa Cruz. Disappointing to say the least. I’d totally buy one of these if they did something like the Bronco sport badlands because it does look cool. Looks aren’t enough though.
Never heard anyone refer to an engine size as 2 and a half liter.
Everyone complaining that this isnt a true off roader are the same people who drive lifted trucks on rubber band tires. True off roaders will buy a vehicle for off roading not this. We can all use this vehicle with no issues. I am part of the 95% that uses a 4x4 as a mall crawler.
Ford flex with minivan tail lights
You couldn't pay me to drive a Hyundai/Kia. Not with all of the powertrain issues that they are having...
Looks like a taller Ford Flex) don't ask why
Looks like Hyundai tried to combine a minivan, wagon , crossover, (and a hearse?). Best leave it on the tarmac.
i think youd be in trouble trying to get aways from the zombies off road in that thing somehow .
looks great , but then i love station wagons of any model.
they should maybe focus on that market rather than push people to take these things off roads n have to pay out some hefty warranty repairs on that slipping transmission and suspension breakages .
A stretched Bronco
Actually, I like that Hyundai
When something becomes so expensive, you dont give af? Anemic powertrain and a flat rear end, they will sell like crazy
It looks nice, except for the back yuck.
Tommy aka Todd Howard reviews the Santa Fe lol
Again, why don't they ever talk about the problems they have had will oil consumption in all their engines. I know a couple people with a Hyundai's that consume close to a quart every 1,000-1,500 miles. Big issue but never mentioned, not once.
As the stealership would say " that little oil consumption is normal.
Why would they talk about that with a brand new car that has just been released, that they haven't even had a chance to review. These are press launches. Nobody knows how reliable this car is going to be, so why would they be talking about a engine issues on other cars? Jesus, if you want something to bitch about, at least do it on a relevant video. smdh
At least put the actual one in the thumbnail, not the one with 22" wheels and a flat tire 😂
With those overhangs? You're joking, right? I think a simple trip to MOAB will straighten out your definition of "off road" . Maybe school gravel parking lots, will impress you.
I feel like santa fe is just trying to steal the ford bronco sport's thunder
yall should put the santa fe xrt head to head with the bronco sport
Ford Bronco Sport is a legitimate Subaru Wilderness competitor unlike the XRT, but it is WAY smaller than the XRT. Badlands trim is about the same price as the XRT though.
