My 5 year old son has level 2 autism and he loves our cat (we adopted our cat a couple years before he was born)… initially he’s unaware of the cat being around but in the past year he has been petting the cat while saying “cat says meow meow” ❤

It made me laugh out loud when Adam said "if you like pets... subscribe"🤣I would subscribe to you guys a million times if I could. Simon is such a sweetie and I love how this AI cat helps him communicate more in a safe way. In my experience, we autistic people seem to have a special connection with animals, we often bond more strongly with a pet than with other people. I've loved dogs since I was a baby. My first word wasn't "mama" or dada" but "doggy" and dogs were my first special interest. I had a therapy dog for a long time and she helped me a lot. Therapists sometimes forget how helpful animals can be for autistic people during therapy.
Did you guys have pets growing up and would you say you're more cat or dog people? Maybe Ezra is just more of a dog person? Or does he not show any interest in animals yet? Rather than "just" getting a pet you might want to look into autism service dogs. These dogs are trained with special tasks based on the needs of the individual but of course Ezra (or Simon) would need to be comfortable with a dog. It wouldn't just be a pet, a friend and a family member but an aid in many ways. Of course still needs to be fed and taken care of like any other pet, but especially for a family like yours, that might be a great fit!

My brother has autism & last year i gave him a kitten. At first he wasn't interested in the kitten, then tried playing with the kitten but would be a bit rough as he didn't understand how to handle a pet. I'm always present supervising so no injuries occured. Then after a while i noticed my brother would acknowledge the cat as another member of our household. Now a year later, my brother is careful with his new furry buddy & they're best friends. It's amazing the impact animals have on us humans. This robo cat is a great introduction to pets for the kids. Hopefully someday you can transition to a real pet. Good luck!

If you do get a real cat (or a dog) at some point you will need to keep in mind that they can decide to lie down pretty much anywhere at any time. For example, just after I got my mail today one of the people in my building let his or her cat lie down in the middle of the hallway. Luckily I was paying attention and managed to walk around the cat just in time.

Ezra's vocal stimming sounds somewhat more coordinated than it used to. He still doesn't seem to do consonants of any kind, but it's shorter bursts that are more clipped-off at the beginning and end, and his voice sounds more like a normal boy of his age shouting in surprise (or any other emotion that tends to cause people to make wordless exclamations).
The cat seems like the sort of thing that is likely to break easily if handled roughly, I wonder how long it will survive Ezra and Simon? A real cat is agile enough to flee and feisty enough to defend itself if treated roughly, and also capable of communicating that it is not happy, all of which make them more survivable when dealing with small children.

When I was Simon’s age the light-up eyes probably would have been scary for me. By age nine or ten (a year or two older than Ezra) they probably would have interested me and I would have wanted to know how they work.
I guess maybe that’s one of the differences between being level two like I was at the age (I’m level one now) and being level one from the beginning like Simon.

Owning pets are a lot of work! They require lots of training, exercise, potty training, food, drink, bathing, bonding, and getting to know each other. It’s also essential to head to the vet regularly for pets in case if they have health conditions, and keep vaccines and pet bills up to date. 🐕 🐈

It’s good to see Simon using more phrases and sentences here. I was wondering if he would still be talking after he was sucking on his fingers earlier in the video.
It’s good that he’s back in school. Hopefully the structure will keep him pretty much developmentally on track in as many areas as possible (especially speech and toilet training).
Regarding the possibility of a pet my main concern might be that Simon or Ezra might become jealous of the attention that the new pet receives and/or confused when they notice that the pet is allowed to “go” outside or in a litter box and they are not allowed to do that. When the time comes one or both of them might make some mistakes in this area (sort of like what Chuckie does in the Rugrats episode “Potty Training Spike”) even though Simon is a couple years older than Chuckie on Rugrats.
I wonder if Chuckie was supposed to be level one like Simon. He seemed to start talking around the same age as Simon did and social situations and body language sometimes seemed to confuse Chuckie even in the All Grown Up series where they are about ten years older (give or take).

I have 3 cats, a grey and orange cat named Lexxie (12 years old female) a black cat named Pote (3 years old male) and a tortoise shell coloured cat named Theresita (3 years old female). My cat Lexxie is very attached to me and sleeps with me almost every night, she also meows all the time. My cat Pote is quite big but he acts like a tiny kitten in how he’ll play with almost anything and how he’s very attention seeking (he’s very social and he’ll even nip you if you don’t pay attention to him. My cat Theresita is the cat my parents seem the most attached to, she also has a very adorable meow and she gets very sucky with me too, there are times where I start walking away and she pounces on my feet, she’s also quite playful although not as playful as Pote. She’s also quite brave in how at my cottage (We bring the cats with us. Except this year we didn’t bring Lexxie cause she caused lots of trouble last year while we were getting ready to leave) Theresita stood up to the neighbours dog (who’s gigantic) when she was still basically a kitten, the other two just ran away. So yeah that’s some information about my cats btw we’ve had them all since they were tiny kittens.

@@7AheadfamilyI know Ezra has been potty training for a while. Is it possible that potty accidents could be starting to bother him the way that they started bothering Simon late last Summer?
If so, maybe you can add new phrases to his iPad app like “Uh-oh”, “accident”, and “Oh no, potty!”. Last year Simon seemed to learn both of those phrases (“uh-oh” and “oh no, potty!”) around the same time. If Ezra is able to experience embarrassment like Simon started to around late Summer or early Fall of last year he might be ready for this.

    • @7Aheadfamily

@@7Aheadfamily I don’t know if you’re doing social stories with Ezra (or if he responds to them) but if this works fairly well with him you can use these to introduce him to the phrases “uh-oh”, “oh no, potty!”, and perhaps other words and phrases like “push”, “poop”,”pee”,”accident”,etc,
I wonder if Simon learned “uh-oh” and “oh no, potty!” through the use of social stories before that shopping trip last year a month or two before he pretty much finished his daytime training. If this is how Simon learned it then maybe Ezra can learn in a similar way including an experience or two similar to the one that Simon had last year in his car seat that time. You can do this by having someone watch Ezra while he’s in his high chair or in his car seat and if he does a potty dance and looks like he’s about to have a wetting accident you can move his hand to the option for “oh no, potty!”. After he “goes” you can point out gently and without judgment that he had an accident and move his hand over to the option for “accident”
You will mostly want to focus on getting Ezra to the toilet but at least one or two fairly random experiences like what I described in the previous paragraph shouldn’t set him back all that much (if at all) especially if Simon was already beginning to self-initiate (at least at home) at the time of his car seat wetting accident during that Dollar Tree shopping trip. From what I can gather Simon’s wetting accident that time didn’t really set him back all that much and it looked like he just needed some extra reminders (e.g. while typing on typing on the computer and another time when he was doing a potty dance while watching a cartoon (as referenced in the potty training video)) for a couple of days or perhaps even up to a week after that one mishap. If Ezra is far enough along in his own training it might be similar for him.

Yeah, I don't think he is regressing.

He is learning and progressing very quickly, thankfully. :)

@@7AheadfamilyThat’s good to hear. I was wondering because I also watch the Autism Family UA-cam channel off and on and Alistair sometimes does this and I seem to remember that he had some regression off and on over the years.
I don’t know how their autism levels compare but given that Alistair and Simon seem to be pretty good friends I would imagine that they have quite a bit in common. Even if Alistair turns out to be level two like I was at that age he might be able to introduce Simon to some new words and show him how to do some new things.
If Alistair knows how to tie his own shoes (or learns how to at some point if he doesn’t yet) maybe he can show Simon how to do it (for example). If Autism Family makes more videos I will probably hear more about how he is doing at some point.
